I think I see now why I your videos work so well for me personally. I really enjoy the way how concisely you explain your colours/thought processes through a few keywords of text. The lowkey music makes it easy for me to really focus on how you achieve your results, without verbal information dumps distracting me. I also really appreciate having the visual of how you handle your palette on the side, very useful reference on your water/pigment ratio. It’s excellent ‘show’ with just enough of ‘tell’!

I like your delicate style and clean color. Do you use reference photos when you paint or are they from your imagination? It looks like fun and I take my painting too seriously. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Thank you so much Judith! I paint from my imagination mostly, as I tend to stick to a reference photo too closely and start “rendering” instead of being “free” with my paints and brushstrokes, and that makes those paintings less expressive and more boring… I do use photos if I need to study the shape of a particular tree, or to see how the light behaves in different weather conditions. Painting from imagination is hard at first but with time we develop a “visual library” in our minds that helps with creating imaginary scenes.

Do you use cold or hot press? I’m curious because I want to learn to do more wet on wet watercolor paintings. I’ve only ever done dry brush and I’ve reached a point where I’m just not satisfied with it anymore. I’ve only used cold press. I’ve never tried hot press and am unsure how it will respond or of I should even go that direction. Thank you for the most excellent tutorial. I’m going to watch it again! And subscribe! 😁

I used cold press for this video, and it's the paper I use the most (btw you can find the list of all materials including paper in the description of each video). And I have a few videos where I paint on hot press - there is a playlist on my channel :) They are such different papers that produce very different results. Painting on hot press is so much fun!
