This is lowkey one of your best videos, it really addressed issues a lot of us producers have, particularly going into autopilot and getting stuck in a habit. Those things are really the antithesis of what being creative is all about.

Small tip... Alch samples often with the turntable pitch at -8 or +8, not sure what exact tuning effect it has on the samples but the outcome is most likely out of tune which combined with anything played over it like a bass line (actually tuned correctly) will result in a bit of dissonance, which in this style of creepy beats is desirable. This also makes it hard to play too much melodic stuff over the samples which explains why he tends add the complexity the way shown here.

He gets creative with sound and that’s not something many artists or makers like to do once they “make it”. Many artists will rinse and repeat the same formula that got them successful until they’re just a former shell of themselves and they get tossed aside for the next producer. Alchemist tends to keep evolving and finding something new and that’s why he’s still relevant and wanted in Hip Hop. I don’t know the guy but I’m very proud of his career.

Listening to Tyler, the Creator made me want to start rapping, Nas made me want to start rapping WELL. In the same light, Ye made me want to start producing, Alchemist made me want to start producing WELL. It’s important to study the greats, as their work is packed with precision and details that most won’t notice but will still appreciate subconsciously. Great breakdown.

Thanks for sharing. I feel like Alchemists music comes from his heart. He is absorbed and is the culture. This is great but most importantly expand your knowledge and make it something you feel. Be careful not to chase your tail trying to chase someone else’s. Keep up the great content.

One thing i think is incredibly important in this kind of hip hop (boom bap, lofi, half time, west coast/La beats) is SPACING giving all your elements a space to breathe and cutting the tails off your sounds can really help add drive and groove to your beat; especially if you have stuff that’s off grid. Big ups Navi, would love to have you on my channel sometime

@E Berg damn that's smart. i know that some keyboards / synths have a function where you can set it to play in any particular key and it will automatically transpose in real time. i feel like mike dean wouldn't need that but it could be useful

I thought this was a normal way to make beats besides looping samples lol I was never an expert but I made beats in FL studio for years chopping and splicing small bits or looping samples and using drum patterns and such on it. I even had the chance to go to 2 studios here in New York and watch some guys make beats. The normal thing there was using the drum pads with sample pieces to add to beats or make them from scratch. I never knew this was a thing producers struggled with and assumed it was what most do by default. I'm more of a writer/lyricist than a producer. Guess you learn something knew everyday.

When you start out producing, trying to make these “simple” or cut back style beats is impossible, it’s almost like some wizard shit you can’t figure out. The beats will sound so hollow, thin and amateur. But over time you realise it’s all in the texture and even rhythm of stuff. Like not quantising your drums could even help
