With anxiety, stress, and sleep dysfunction skyrocketing around the globe, it's time we look at the unspoken reasons why. These debilitating challenges can be meaningfully impacted with ten to twenty minutes of breathing exercises per day. Max Strom,who has taught breath-work for 20 years, reveals his insights into the healing power of the breath.
Max Strom teaches personal transformation, mindfulness, and yoga worldwide and is known for inspiring and impacting the lives of his students. His Inner Axis method addresses the internal aspects of our life and our potential for physical and emotional healing. He is the author of "A Life Worth Breathing," and, "There is No App for Happiness."

He has an amazing voice, I could listen to him 25/7. He uses wonderful sentence structure and richly accurate content. Best EVER speech on breathing. I teach breathwork, and have studied, taught and taken workshops for decades. We call it Pranayama in my yoga practice. But I’m a non-yoga breath-work coach also. I never get sick (caveat: I did get COVID)

After suffering debilitating anxiety for 6 years , I decided to take my health into my own hands . Giving up alcohol , giving up being with negative people , stop watching the news , exercise daily , ate a full plant based diet , got qualified in mindfulness , and meditate 45 mins daily , getting into nature as much as I can .. 90% of the time we have to save ourselves it's in our own hands Edit: it's crazy looking back at this comment I never expected so many people to engage in the comments. Update a few years later after leaving this comment. I am still alcohol free never had a drop ever again , I am eating fish and eggs (plant based diet faded away) , I exercise daily and train in the gym its my life , my mindfulness breath work is non existent at the moment hence why I returned to watch this video. Oh and I now live in Paris (used to struggle with panic attacks afraid to leave my house) now I live in Paris. Life's crazy journey. Hoping to get back to my mindfulness breath work 1 hour session a day. So helpful.

Thank you!!!!! It's been 7 years since I lost my mother. She was the love of my life. I miss her so much it hurts. And since she died, lived through a flood, direct hit cat 5 hurricane, and the pandemic. It's been a series of relentless events completely out of my control. Mom was always the person I could speak with that would make things okay. Without her, I've felt like a sailboat without a rudder in horrible seas. Just now realize I have to find a new way to live. Barely survived covid so I must have a purpose. This Ted talk is spot on.

The first few times I did 4-7-8 breathing I eventually felt like I was suffocating or drowning. It was mostly mental. I did need to shift to taking a deeper intake but I got more used to it. It really is helpful. Just calming listening to your natural breathe is helpful and is a great intro to meditation technique. Every time your mind wanders, just bring it back to paying attention to your breathing in a non-judgemental way. Eventually your mind wanders less and for shorter periods. I didn't really have meditation take root and shift me until someone taught me that.

I can totally relate. We see negative news all the time, the times are uncertain and anxiety has really increased. I had a panic attack 2 months back because my aunt died due to Covid, today I had a mild one again because my chest felt tight and it felt like I was having a heart attack when in reality I knew it was a panic attack. Listening to him made me calm. It is really really important for us to stop watching negative news and embrace uncertainty. I myself am learning to do this. Thank you for including the story about grief, I'm sharing this with my widows group. I learned the Buteyko method when my naturopath noticed my breathing problem. I thought I couldn't get a good breath but was actually experiencing low oxygen because of stress. Learning about the sympathetic and parasympathetic system really made a difference.

What a powerful talk! Thank you for sharing this with this training with the world, Max! So grateful for you! For me, meditation and breathing have enabled me to release and heal my PTSD and ADD. I have never felt better since I picked up meditation and breathwork as daily training since 2008. Anyone who's watching this or reading this comment, please pay attention to what's been taught - this is solid GOLD and your life will change - you just gotta give it a try and stick with it for a little bit before judging it. I have been meditating since 2008 and haven't missed a day ever since. I became so passionate about meditation and breathwork that I became a meditation trainer and started my own meditation-based workshops in Sedona, AZ.

It’s true, I did some breathing exercises from Netflix’s Headspace and I felt tears running down my face while I was breathing. This is an outstanding talk. I teach my yoga students to breathe at the beginning of each class. Can't do breath retention with one pregnant student, but we do lots of deep, conscious breaths.

WOW. I was doing a breathing exercise while listing to this and when he told the story about the CEO losing his brother I started balling for the first time in months. I've been suffering from Exploding Head Syndrome and Chronic Sympathetic Arousal for a long time and I think I've finally found the key. Our qigong teacher has suggested that we build a library of a thousand breaths to serve each need of a body system as it arrises in the field. What is crucial is that we are paying attention and chose appropriately from our library. These needs are specific to body awareness system by system and need to be sorted.This has been a useful addition to my collection. Many thanks.

Just a little note, meditation does not tell you to sit down and STOP THINKING. It actually asks you to sit down comfortably , on a chair is fine, start observing your BREATH as it goes in and out and if thoughts arise let them go and gently return to the BREATH. Doing this will gradually calm the thinking and the body and mind will relax🙏 Learnt this for free😉

As a meditator for 25 years, I think Mr Strom's point still stands. Meditation at the beginning of a learning journey is tedious, strained and stressful, full of imagined ideas of failure, and that you "just can't do it". Breathing exercises are immediately accessible to all and give instant results. In fact I'd say 2 years of breathing exercises only, as a pre-cursor to taking up meditation, would have a massive positive impact on the effectiveness of the meditation.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I did the exercise with you on this video and I must say that I can feel the difference. I will continue doing the exercises. So great!! We will get through this together!! So powerful! One critique though, we aren’t supposed to be mouth breathers. Breathing through the mouth initiates the flight or fight response. Deep nasal breathing is the calming meditative breath. Love this tedtalk though. Crying and working through grief is super important to good health.

I have been doing this since 1999. Its great. I add one other thing. When you let your air out, go til you are completely emptying your lungs of air (diaphragm in) hold for a few seconds, then slowly take a breath in. I call it square or rectangular breathing when I meditate or just use it for breathing exercise. Example: 3 seconds inhale, 3 sec hold your breath, 3 sec exhale, 3 sec hold stomach diaphragm in and 3 sec inhale. Or 5 sec inhale, 3 hold, 5 ex, 3 hold then 5 inhale. Peace

Thanks for this. I realized I never dealt with the grief of my grandmothers passing. Just started working as much as possible. Then came the physical problems. Dizzyness, panic attacks, constant anxiety and stress. Forced me to ditch clients to reduce my workload in a desperate attempt to stay sane. The fear of the anxiety and attacks only made the situation worse and I ended up in a spiral. Recently I learned about mindfulness and yoga, things I would never have taken seriously in the past. And it really does work. Slowly but surely rebuilding my confidence and feeling of wellbeing. I still never cry, but I did shed a tear when this man talked about the CEO's brother passing. Been there. Thank you.

I wish truly that you find your way. The path may be hard, you may stumble. Life has a way of aways reaching back and picking you up, brushing off the dirt, and then your off running again. But mabey if you slowed down a tad bit when you crashed you would not crash so hard. Also be mindful of your mind body and soul. They are very powerful tools.

Massage is wonderful way to deal with stress and anxiety. I think everyone should be given a gift 🎁 card to deal with this phenomena in society. Reflexology is another good approach among many holistic approaches.

Brilliant talk and agree! I have a mild form of MS and have had CPTSD but have helped manage it a lot by sleeping more, meditation and eating a more plant based Paleo diet ,no alcohol and have cut our sugar and use Stevia only. Yoga also helps. Having been into weight lifting throughout the 1980s and 90s and a fitness trainer in the 1990s, my MS was in remission for over 25 years and I've been able to keep it at bay by also taking lots of vitamins esp Vit D3 and other supplements! There's a direct correlation between the health of our gut microbiome and the brain. the mind /body connection! As well as our spiritual connection! There's much we can all do to not only help ourselves but help others as well around the world....spread the word! "let medicine be thy food and food thy medicine", "all disease starts in the gut"...Hippocrates who also recommended apple cider vinegar drinks! Guess he really knew what he was talking about. Too bad more allopathic conventional medical doctors don't realize this as they take the Hippocratic oath in medical schools! Thanks for sharing~

Thank you, this is wonderful. Loved hearing the stories about the Navy Seals and the executive. And yes I was doing his exercise as I watched. :) I prefer to inhale through my nose, though, and exhale the same. It is much more calming and activates the lungs all the way to the bottom. Currently crafting a meditation/mindfulness presentation for work to provide groups of people in my community with the knowledge and practice.. was struggling with how to teach meditation quickly and realized it took me a long time to learn. And realized I should instead teach breathing exercises and mindfulness. Western Vipassana or mindfulness meditation is the key here. Max speaks perfect sense...I need to listen to Max Strom read to me and I would melt into the chair. What an excellent calming voice. My pulse is a regular 60, it went down even further and my watch thought I was asleep.

Love everyone Max said but the breathing. I’ve been practicing and teaching yoga and breathing for 25 years. Using the belly is more effective and more deeply relaxing. You can add the chest to follow, but if you start with the chest you activate fight-flight.
