I also wondered the same thing with the beam but the game runners probably would have done something. They did turn off the light when they found someone getting around not knowing which glass is which

@Jorge Emilio in Thug of war you chose your team, at the end either way the main characters team won due to skill and experience, licking the candy wasn’t the only way to win though if you were good with a needle or had a good shape you could win. In these challenges there were multiple ways to win even if not with the best team or best strength. The only reason the glass guy made it was because he had knowledge nobody else has, you can argue its unfair or fair, but an advantage not a single other player has is pretty unfair imo
Jorge Emilio
Jorge Emilio 7 aylar önce
@Berserker55 The problem is that squid game is full of "unfair advantages", Thug of war is about strenght, with some people being naturally stronger than other, in average men are stronger than women and younger people are stronger than old people, all of this gives an unfair advantage to someone. In a more extreme example, the loophole of licking the candy that Seong Gi used requires the knowledge that sugar "melts" in contact with a liquid. So if those are fair, I don't see how knowing about glass is unfair

I was also wondering.. maybe they could have used there shoes to throw at the glass? Maybe the sound would have been different just like the marble? Probably not possible but MAYBE with enough force of them being thrown they would have broken the glass?

I really love the message that while money doesn't buy happiness , you need to have money to get your basic needs met and that will allow you to gain happiness elsewhere. I hate when people tell poor people that "money doesn't buy happiness" as a form of... I don't even know, reassurance? because, sure, money can't buy happiness, but not having money brings so many problems and anxieties with it. You need money to live comfortably.

A few things to point out: -when the officer (I forgot his name) is going through the list of winners, there is only one winner in each game. I’m guessing that there could be multiple winners, but the staff are constantly trying to eliminate players. (This is one more for the legality video) -in the episode “V.I.P.S” one of the VIP’s remark “the contest in Korea was the best” so this could imply that there are multiple games being held in multiple countries.

One theory ties into this. Some say, that if you choose the red ddakji (paper flip), you'd be selected as a soldier or staff member. Only those who choose the blue become players. The staff's motivations are provided by the promise of all of the prize money if all players die. That's why there are so few winners.

Maaaannn. The game in Brazil must have been wild. Kids back then had some games like throwing small powder bombs (called Cabeças de Nego) here and others like Fusca Azul, constinsting of a group of kids spanking eachother when they immediatly find a blue beetle parked somewhere; if one finds it and yells the word, its all by themselves

Except you can vote anytime to stop the game. So all you have to do is requiring a vote before each game after the rules has been enonced. If they know you'll ask for a vote, and thry want the game to continue, they won't put you in a battle royal game when you have only a chance on 30 to survive. By doing this, you assure each game give you 50% or more chance to survive. Giving you 1 chance of 64 min. ...which is low, but better than a chance of 550.

Not sure about the two winners, but I agree with OP. It’s a show, and much like the Hunger Games, I don’t think the VIPs would find it entertaining if more than one person won. More than likely, the games are planned in such a way that there will probably only be one winner.

squid games season 2 will be good if they continue the story where we left off and focus on him trying to bring down the organization. BUT if they do a typical corporate move, they may attempt to simply repeat the events of season 1 with another "squid game", and give some lousy excuse why he has to participate. That will probably not be so good. I could see it being good if he finds a way to break and cheat each game and is constantly sneaking around the facility, sabotaging them from within. But if its just a repeat of season 1 with a new cast, I think it will be boring

I just wanna say, I disagree about the glass bridge game being cheap and counter to like the message of the game runners. 7:24 Yes, it does directly counteract the "everyone has a fair chance" principle, and that's the point. The show is a metaphor for the current state of capitalism, which also claims to give everyone a fair chance, but in reality the one's in charge can change the rules of the game whenever things don't go the way they want them to, and there's nothing the "players" can do about it

Like when billion dollar hedge funds "somehow" shutdown the buying of the gamestop stock they shorted by 140% because they were losing millions. The amateur investors playing by the rules, had the rules changed mid-game because the rich were losing.

Exactly. Watching this video was entertaining but it feels like Mattpat ignoring the central theme of the game. Those in charge set the rules and can change them on a whim. Mat, you're basing your whole theory on the assumption that there can be more than 1 winner. In episode 5 we briefly see the list of previous winners and there is clearly only 1 winner in each game since 1988. Also - the Front Man is clearly 'regulating' the number of players - like before the tug-of-war he artificially started the brawl and ended it when the number of players went down to exactly 80 - so he can conveniently divide the players into 8 groups of 10. The tug-of-war halved the number of players to 40. However - 1 was killed due to breaching the rules - so the Front Man let 1 player not to participate in the marble game - in order to keep the number of players in accordance with the plan. There were supposed to be 20 players participating in the bridge game, so according to the plan statistically 10 people could cross the bridge - hence there was not supposed to be a majority to end the game here. As we know in fact there were only 16 players on the bridge - because there were 3 unplanned deaths in the marble game - probably due to not determining the winner in time. Also 1 player committed suicide. If the 16 players in the bridge game would think for 1 minute - they could have noticed that it is in the best interest of the majority (at least first 9) to vote to end the game. They probably didn't even think that there is this possibility to have a vote during the game - but we know from the last episode that it was possible. BTW: since 1988 every game has a winner - not a single one was permanently ended with a vote.

"If the glass expert shared earlier, everyone could have survived." Except once the game-master realized what he was doing, they turned out the lights. Waiting until there were only a few panels left was actually the most sound strategy for his own survival.
ferty_brando
ferty_brando 3 aylar önce
The correct option for this game was to have each player make one jump, which wouldve been fair for everyone. Each player takes a turn jumping 1 glass. If a player refuses to take their turn, either shove them off or let them know they will be shoved off by all remaining players, which should deter anyone from trying to skip. Then nobody would have to jump more than like twice. A trick would be to jump again immediately after landing, all the glass held for a moment which would be enough time to jump again even if it shattered. Even if we assume it was movie magic that it waited to break, the fact that it was solid at all means you could leap again if you stayed in motion. Another trick would be using bigger people to hold on to someone and use that person as a poking stick to test glass. Another possible trick would be for contestants to hold hands, but could become problematic after more than 1 jump if you'd have multiple people dangling, unless u could somehow reach your arms far enough to still hold hands with someone at the next glass, then it would be easy. So I was googling the average persons standing jump distance- between 4-6 feet, and how far someone can reach (which is hard to find), but average arm length is 2 feet with an extra 10 inches of leaning. I dont recall anyone just missing a jump (though they mightve once) so it was probably on the lower side of distance, at around 4-5 feet. With that estimation, they should be able to lean forward and hold hands without anyone inbetween them, making a human rope possible and thus beating the entire glass game with zero deaths.
Hamza Sultan
Hamza Sultan 4 aylar önce
Here's the deal. You say you know about the glass but immediately tell everyone to act as they were. Act like you're praying for every jump or try to see it without fully bending down, even try seeing a few panels ahead so you can make a few jumps every time. By the time the game master notices, you've allowed a significantly higher number of people to survive than the 3 that did by the end of the game.

I understand what you're saying, but turning off the lights was a decision made on a whim. That doesn't make waiting longer a better strategy in general (if that's what you're implying), just one that happened to be luckier since it worked out better than it otherwise would have given the decision.

A little more research into Korean culture and you might actually like the glass game (because it fits the theme so well). The glass game I believe it's based on the "ladder game" which is a commonly played game in Korea. It's generally used to pick out winners/losers randomly. Ladders are stacked horizontally with alternating rungs. Players pick a path and they go down the ladder, crossing over every time there is a rung. If it is designed well, it's pretty hard to tell where you'll end up. The results are SUPPOSED to be random so taking the time to read the path is not allowed. To prevent someone reading the paths, sometimes the middle area is covered up. I think the glass game is a creative adaptation of it and turning off of the lights is similar to covering up the mid section to stop a player who is obviously reading the paths. Despite how everyone loves talking about "surviving" squid game I think it's supposed to be about gambling. In the end, everything was a game of chance. The whole organization was created by rich people looking for a new game to gamble on. It's a commentary on Korean society's love of gambling that shows up even in children's games. The ladder game is a really innocent game and is often played to decide who should win a prize or who should do the annoying chore. Which is why the glass game is such a fitting adaptation in squid games.

I do think the money pot growing if people die was a motivation for people dying though. It's not so much surviving anymore. It's about how much money you can get with death. So it does make sense that some people would want others to die to get more money. Just realizing you explained that later in the video. Perfect example of watching the whole thing before commenting lol

To be perfectly honest though, the lights were turned off at the request of the VIPs who were obviously a bunch of rich pompous Karens. I like to believe that the Frontman would not have done that hadn't he been pressured to corruption by the top clients. It was prolly done to show that even those who hold their ideologies dear will give that up once pressured by someone who could cost them their job.

I feel like the 7:40 breakdown of the glass jumping challenge not being fair misses the point of the show: it isn't fair. It never has been. As organized and powerful the perpetrators of the game are, and as much as they claim to defend fairness, it's not fair. For any of the debtors. It's symbolic because it IS empty, needlessly bloody, painful spectacle. Age, gender, physical prowess, social status all inherently put some over others. It also isn't fair because these are all desperate people who essentially CAN'T say no to playing this murderous and suicidal game. It's yet another sign that the words of the organizers are empty because they obviously can't really keep their word. It's all entertainment to the VIPs and those who only see them as statistics, and an allegory for how even programs purportedly meant to give the poor a fair chance aren't entirely effective.
SPLICE KNIGHT
SPLICE KNIGHT Yıl önce
Matt's strategy doesn't take into account one teeny weeny, crucial little detail, the tendency for people in a desperate situation (exactly the people the game targets) are prone to making irrational and gut-based intuitive calls about things, which are frequently wrong. This is also where the issue of instinctual attitudes of, "either me or them" becomes an issue and fucks over basically everyone.

Also Matt's strategy assumes that the games are always played fair.. Which they're not. The game runners put on a show that everything is fair, but at any given time if they don't please their investors.. The rules could change or get modified on the spot. The investors wanted death, sure they could allow multiple winners.. But at least 95% of the players are expected to die no matter what the odds are. Also everytime one player is killed, there's less people to share it with.. Meaning the final few kills increase your winnings more, and human greed is already killing people daily without even adding a game show to it.

You're missing something: If the glassmaker had revealed himself earlier in the game, it would have worse, not better. Remember that the Face Man, once he realized what the glassmaker was doing, cut the lights, killing his ability to make the decision, and only 3 contestants survived that round, him not being one of them. Had done it earlier, they'd have been much less far across before the glassmaker lost that ability, and potentially end the game with 1 or 0 survivors.

That's why they had the bonus games between rounds: to reduce the number of players to the correct amount. When players got too creative the Front Man intervened. If the players knew ahead of time there will only be one winner/survivor all of the married couples would have noped out or in desperation sent only one spouse. The illusion of multiple winners is what gave the players false hope.

While that is an entirely fair gripe because it IS a stupid game, I think that the overall point was to show that for as much as the VIPs talk a big game about "equal opportunity" they really are just interested in spectacle. There is no fairness in the game because certain games are harder just by chance for certain people. And in the episode when it looks like they are going to start working together with the glass worker they turn out the lights to take away their advantage because they don't actually care about being fair they care about watching an interesting show. Their philosophy is supposed to be hollow.

The marbles game only specifies that you must take all 10 marbles from your opponent- not that you must have all 20. So, in theory, couldn’t you give your opponent your 10 then take theirs? I don’t know if this would be allowed by the rules, it’s been a while since I last watched the show.

The whole multiple people can win thing while technically correct in the show’s logic does not actually bear out. When the police officer looks at the list of victors there is only 1 victor every year suggesting no matter how much people try to team up it won’t work.

I think hunger, sleep deprivation, and trauma makes it a lot harder to see clever solutions or consider these statistics or heck, to even be aware of the clues on the wall. You need a very strong will to live, and to have a good enough upbringing to stay present. So another factor with this is 'what do you have to live for?' (as we see literally decide fates in the marble game). If you are desperate enough for money to participate, it better be for noble reasons, or you will sort of sabotage yourself at a certain point from clouded judgement & trauma, or become so selfish you will sabotage your allegiances and make hasty choices. For being morally reprehensible, the whole game is a fascinating lesson in the value of having your priorities straight. It makes sense that someone with a pretty pure heart ended up winning, he's certainly the Charlie of this murderous chocolate factory.

I thought that the glass game was like hopscotch where you can only step on one tile with one foot unless it's a double scotch. It was kind of like the amplified version of that game. The turning out the lights however was purely for paid spectacle and because the gamblers were getting bored.
Kast
Kast 18 gün önce
14:40 honestly, the plan I think would work the best is to sit on the previous winning tile, hold on to its sides for support, and kick the next tile. If it breaks, jump on the one opposite. If it doesn't, you just continue the strategy. It's not cheating, as you're technically only stepping on the ones made of tempered glass, per the game's rules.

For the red light green light game, my idea for a strategy is walk fast, don’t run. Running will make you slip up easier because your body is not used to stopping at that speed, walking fast makes you take true and even steps, that you can stand in, also the time limit is long, so you’ll probably be able to make it with this too. Second, stay close to the wall, so you have something to hold against if worst comes to worst
Bad Guy

It’s smart to walk against the wall because if the doll can sense motion best believe the doll can’t sense a players motion if the player is against the wall. The doll can only detect players straight forward the eyes might cross over a few times but I hardly believe the doll can detect a player against a wall.

Actually, if the glass guy had chosen to help everyone instead of letting them die he would have died sooner. By standing out and making the game no fun he would risk being targeted by the front man, which is exactly what happened. The front man would have shut the lights off sooner and since the glass guy would have had to be in the front to see the glass now he was the one who had to continue making the moves (which almost certainly would have led to his death). The other players would have definitely not played fair and let him back to his cozy spot close to the back. So his decision is actually what almost led him to living, he had a 50/50 percent chance at the end since there was only one set of panels remaining, unfortunately he drew the short stick.

@x Taniwha x I agree. MatPat also provided another solution: to bend the rules like in the previous games or to get majority vote to not do the game. If they jumped onto the glass plates where the steel struts were supporting the glass instead of the center of the panels, even if they jump on a regular glass panel, there is still a chance that it would take their weight. But, I don't know if that would have been considered breaking the rules for choosing the wrong panel in the first place.

Fun fact: in the last game-- namely called squid game-- there can only be one winner. you can start in teams of defensive and offensive sides, but only one person can touch the end to be the sole victor. I think the game makers always choose games where there can be one winner as the final game because there was only 1 winner per each annual squid game in the records room that the Junho found. edit: so i’ve been informed by a few replies that the whole team wins when someone makes it to the end. but my family and i play with only one winner so ig rules can vary depending on how u wanna play:)

@Angel the glass was rigged to explode when the timer hit zero. The timer hit zero as they got to the platform because Deok-Su wasted time being a coward and so did that hyper-God freak guy. As for the glass guy, he wasn't in front till the end so his skills weren't exactly being used by anyone but him. Once he was in front the game lost its sporting value for the spectators. The Front Man says "We ensure all contestants play under the same conditions" and while it is pretty much bullcrap they at least try to enforce it, thus guy can see the difference, means now nobody gets to see what's happening.

@アライグマ First I'd like to say do you even understand capitalism? The fact that you said that communism never happened proves that there is no point arguing with you, when it has happened to numerous countries in the past who suffered under it. And saying "pulling by the bootstraps never work" both my parents were poor but they worked hard and guess what they're not poor anymore and were even able to help out my other relatives. PS communism has killed over 100 millions of people. If you say communism never existed despite what people and historians say then i guess capitalism doesn't exist then, is that the game were playing? I thought this could've been a fun conversation but the fact that you won't even acknowledge the past of communism and even say it never existed just proves to me that you're probably just messing with me.

@12345 67890 I’d like to start by saying that reading your comment is truly a Herculean task. Do you even understand communism and socialism? Communist has never even happened, only forms of socialism, and if you’d like to point to fascist socialist governments, I’ll brake the news to you that fascism is bad regardless of the economic model. Please go read a book. It’s funny how you’re accusing me of lacking self awareness when the meritocracy myth is the central pillar of capitalism, the idea that we all have equal opportunities of success as long as we “pull ourselves by our bootstraps” when in reality, the game has been rigged from the start. Sound familiar? Btw, millions of ppl are starving to death under capitalism too, even more than under communism so that doesn’t really stick my friend lol

@Dragoș capitalism has been around since the first barter ever happened. It is the most sensible solution to the reality of scarcity. My question is why are people more quickly to blame open market volunteerism, than the hierarchies that are the most to blame for the actual inequitable inequalities.
Dragoș
Dragoș Yıl önce
@Rod Stone yeah the show is against the state too wdym. both capitalism and today's states have the same root: colonialism, which was represented in squid game through the VIPs being americans and chinese. also the way the whole plot w the undercover cop went exactly nowhere pretty clearly shows the indifference the police has to injustice

@Dragoș define power, define capitalism. Most extreme inequalities are born from hierarchy, that hierarchy has ranged from, feudal systems, democracies, republics, dictatorships. Those hierarchies have always maintained their influence through police, militaries, and propaganda. If you think taking away open market volunteerism will diminish those hierarchies, or the power of those that have aligned themselves with those hierarchies, you might want to rethink political and economic philosophy.

The real problem with his strategy for sabotaging his own team was that most of the people he was sabotaging, were the older and physically weak. Those are not the people you'd want to waste a sacrifice on in a game that requires you to cut out shapes. On top of that, eliminating them means less targets for player vs player games, making himself more of a target. The fact that he even made it to the end is sheer luck. He was technically the most lucky player in the whole game, even though he loses in the end.

Nobody moved on the red lights, everybody licks their cookie shape, somebody cuts the rope in tug of war, the glass expert silently, perfectly figures out which tiles are tempered (and goes first), and somebody comes up with the brilliant idea to just _take each others' marbles_ and not force someone to be marble-less.
