Wow! It’s very nice to notice that we’ve got some idioms in common in Portuguese, too! But it’s interesting that “to kick the bucket” has a very different meaning over here in Brazil - it means “to lose the temper” or “throw everything up in the air’”! 😆 Thank you so much, dear Lucy! 🤗

So, I'm actually a native English speaker. (American English) But I've been learning some new things and reinforcing some good habits. It's been helping me with some writing and your accent has been a good starting point for a character I'm performing in a group of mine. I wanted to do the English language justice in all of my creative pursuits and thank you so much for the free resources that have helped.

Thanks very much Lucy for all these idioms - helpful for all learning English (like me). AND thank you for the ebook. I do appreciate all your efforts. One little question about an idiom nobody has not been able to explain to me so far: ~ Bless their cotton socks ~ (Rod Stewart mentioned that in his album's liner notes "Every Picture tells a Story" while he thanked a lot of musicians and people helping to make the recording! Any idea? Thanks in advance! 👍

I live in the US in Central Ky ( Lexington area), and out of all of the idioms you shared I was very surprised that around 90% we use exactly the same. A few like, ( " Blow your own trumpet / we say horn.") I ONLY counted about 8, I've never heard, but could figure them out in context as a retired teacher and avid reader. I was going to post any of the ones with tea, I never hear & then you stated one Ive used many times, " That is not my cup of tea." So Interesting... We have most of the same I ones in America! Oh I needed the arm chair one, that is when all my sports men or family complain about pro or college sports stars so badly, as if they could do it...LOL!!

Thank you for this, it’s good to get a reminder of some of these idioms. I’m Swedish and I’m pretty good at English, but I didn’t know all of these, for instance I thought “to paint the town red” meant specifically “to go on a murder spree”, as I’d learnt it from some film or similar where they must have been using it ironically to describe the murder spree, but I took it literally (it made sense to me because, well, red blood and so on).

Hi Lucy, thanks and keep up the great work! I've got a video suggestion or a request if I dare say. You see I'm French, and quite fluent in English, to the point I want to speak English to my baby/toddler, while my wife and everyone else will teach him French, but I lack the distinctive "baby talk" in my vocabulary. That would be words and idioms you use with in England or in the US, to talk to a 10 month old :) "did you do a poo?", things of that matter, pun intended.

I was so confused by #10 -- I'm American, and you had me questioning whether I'd made up the word "enraptured" (meaning the same as you give for "in raptures"). Turns out I didn't make it up, and I discovered that "in raptures" is almost exclusively British English... but now I'm left wondering if Brits ever use "enraptured," and whether there's a homo- category for different spelling/same sound/same meaning.
