You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded - the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be."

Wow. The statin statement is very disingenuous. Side effects happen, yes. I won’t argue about the percent. But we check people who are started on them to ensure they are NOT experiencing adverse side effects or increased liver enzymes (indicating damage) on a regular basis. The moment they have a significant issue with either of those things they are withdrawn from the medication. Throwing out there that you’re “ 9384884- times more likely to experience side effects than benefit us nonsense. We’re just playing with numbers and ignoring the fact that statins have proven time and time again to have a significant MORTALITY benefit. Aka you live longer.

Really Great Ted Talk. I'm the biggest skeptic of doctors and coventional medicine and still your statistics even surprised me. Big eye opener which should be publicized a lot more. Most people are quite likely oblivious to these facts. I favor nutritional medicine and basic simple health choices such as diet, don't drink smoke or drug, low sugar intake etc. Thanks for your effort. Really. 😎

His judgement was clouded and forgot to tell us more then one way to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed. "Plan ahead" man what ever this guy makes it's too much I could have told you that in way under 12 minutes.

That was an incredible lecture, I completely agree with the speaker, and I think that our body start this defense mechanism not only when we are in dangerous, but when we are in an awkward situation or when we are facing a difficult new challenge. Beyond this, I believe that situation still effect our respiratory system. Automatically we start to breathe slowly, and this probably affects our full body, mainly or digestion system and brain system. All these reactions to prepare us to a probable scape. Anyway, thank you professor for all your sharing.

My Primary organizing tool is Lists. Lists for everything. From the prevalent grocery list to a list for a long distance trip and whatnot. Did you find that something was missing from that list the first time around? Then add it to the existing one, search for more ideas and incorporate it on your list. Over time, those points will be at your fingertips and you might not even need a list.

I'm anxious, I've been doing this my whole life and it has not worked so well for me
I tell my subscribers that a way to stay calm is to avoid triggers. And I am someone who battled anger for decades. There are also daily things you can do. Physical fitness is key because that unwinds the mind as well as the fitness part. Then I add a "Mind Workout." Fifteen minutes when I come home from the gym. It can be yoga, tai chi or whatever meditative art suits you. On top of which I add habits that take no time at all. Slowing your breathing when talking to someone who is starting to aggravate you. Avoiding media that amps you up--including some music if that does it for you. But you practice this daily and soon you will develop a new neuro program in your wiring and calmness will become a part of you. Hope that helps---Charles

Well, good reasoning, but kinda flawed. First, you might over-stress yourself on the topic. If you think it through that way, you might even notice the side effects, or the effects of the disease on yourself even before taking the drug. I remember noticing that I have kidney dysfunction just by reading about it. I didn't. Second, you might not have enough information. You might not even know the results of your blood test, let alone the chances of developing side effects. Try to prepare of it like that. You can't consider every problems and every medicine or treatment before going to see the doctor. What you can, however, most of the time is to ask for time to decide. Tell the doc that you want to consider it and give him a call the next day. Don't make decisions on the spot if you don't have to.

He spent too much time getting into his study on the drug and ended up delivering an incomplete and confusing speech about solution to stressful situations because his time was up. It is a shame that he wasn't able to clearly explain his point on the original topic. The key point I got from here was to reduce the chances of a troubling situation by sorting them out when you have the time and energy. Realize what bigger problems may rise when you ignore those tiny problems and fix it before it becomes too late.
