One of the best vids I've seen. I play piano and recently got into producing music and beats, and honestly this vid and similar content is what I need to go from currently being a loop maker, to making full beats. More like this pls, Thank you.

When I started making beats I had the craziest drum patterns but as I learned more about the Art of leaving Room for the artists I started doing normal patterns very simple but works tbh check out dilly got it bumpin my man killing it using the same drum pattern landed 2 Joyner Lucas placements on the same album last year great video btw will definitely try some of these ideas especially the first one 💫💫💫

I really love the beats from the band Crosses. They seem so simple but it's oddly difficult to recreate anything similar. IDK this reminded me of them for some reason. I have no idea if anyone would like them but 'The Epilogue' is an example of a simple beat I can't seem to recreate. trshow.info/watch/kBKAcdZ4eZo/video.html. In the song 'this is a trick' there's a constant sub bass you can't even hear that could be a producer trick or something

Thank you for the great educational content! And would like to add that 3-3-2 pattern is also called Tresillo rhythm, very fundamental for african and south american music
Luke Inglis
Luke Inglis 4 aylar önce
Came here to sat the same. It's used on its own but is also forms the first component of the son clave pattern which is found all over South/Central American music and Caribbean music. It is fundamental to Cuban music for example.

Hey Navie thanks for another great vid. I know you like xpand 2, have you found a way to use the piano roll velocity for it or do you just use automation/edit pattern for that?
Nathaniel
Nathaniel Yıl önce
@Navie D Ahh okay. Yeah some patches work well for me but others don't respond to velocity at all :/. When this happens in other VSTs you can tinker it to get it working but the Xpand2 UI is pretty restrictive
Navie D

Yeah, the velocity just normally works when I use Xpand. Yours doesn't?

So simple but so important. People overlook the fundamentals of a beat structure. Few questions! Was you able to split the FPC onto the channel rack and say the mixer or did you use it for ease of a quick explanation and then actually used channel rack in the beat at the end of each example? And how do you usually start a beat, drums or melody first?
ben badham
ben badham Yıl önce
@Navie D thought so for he former. And yeah there is no wrong way. I usually start with melody/chords etc but sometimes I wanna start with drums and make the drums knock and just add a few hits or stabs to fill it but the beat and bass be the main focus to get some hard drum type beat like BDP Duck Down or Jay-Z where I'm from. Thanks for the reply 👍
Navie D
Navie D Yıl önce
That was just for ease of explanation. For me, I start with the melodic component but I know many people that start with drums. There is no wrong way

So I broke down and bought FL studio even tho I have 2 MPCs now. I don't regret getting them but some things are just faster in FL and there's a lot of limitations in MPC as far as mixing goes. The two work very well together though and for their own specific purposes. So I'll be checking out a lot more of your videos now that I'm in FL as my main DAW.

thx for another good tutorial! One question, is there a way that you could split the drum on the piano roll into different channels like what you did at 2:47? So what I did in this video was just use FPC for the explanation, then actual different channels when showing them in the beat. I don't think you can split a piano roll amongst different channels, I could be wrong though Davie boy

The 2nd example is the foundation of Drum N Bass and Jungle. There is a whole lot of room to get crazy with the beat's in it. If you don't, it actually gets very boring very quickly as you have double timed everything. Listen to some Jungle and to some Drum Funk and you will see what i mean.
