2-hour video on Sunday. HYPE! We do not coordinate with other channels and have no idea what they are working on. We trust in the quality of our videos. Our belief is that there is enough history for everyone and as we are planning to be making videos for a long time, eventually we will cover everything.

@Striker The renaissance in Europe was also created by devout Christians. The first universities came from the Church, and pretty much all the great scientists of Europe at the time were former or current clergymen. My comparison still stands. I know that they were devout Muslims, and I know how Avicenna and the others used and rested on classical Greek/Persian and Indian sources. Islam broke into and stole most of the library of the classical world. It was because if this, and not because of Islam in itself, that there for a, historically speaking, brief moment in time were learned Muslim men - before Islamic conservatism made it difficult for scientists to continue their work.
Striker

@H B your comparison of Islamic golden age to Renaissance is an absolute joke. All of the scholars mentioned like ibn Sina/ Ibn rushd and Ibn khalduun are all practicing devout Muslim believers. Their own words explain this very well and explain how they believed Islam encouraged education.

I've always been interested in Arabic and Muslim history, as it is very short spoken in classes in Portugal. The only time it's mentioned is when we are talking about the time of Reconquista, and they are always portrayed has enemies and vandals. Always been curious and this video is just great. I've also started to learn Arabic, very recent but it is awesome! Having a blast. Hope more people have curiosity and are open enough to fight through the stereotypes we get about Islam and learn how to respect it. It would be awesome to cohexist with it

As a practicing American born and raised convert to Sunni Islam. I am left speechless, amazed and humbled from the level of tact, respect and objectivity of this video. This is one of my favorite channels and definitely one of the best on TRshow. Nothing but great beneficial content. Just a note - Ibn Taymiyyah was born into servitude but was emancipated and went on to become a scholar of every theological discipline in Islam as well as medicine. His essays and teachings on core belief - عقيدة “creed/core belief” refuted the heresies of his time and those of today. He was also not an Arab like many of the greatest scholars of early Islam. Especially in the science of hadeeth. His being mentioned in this video pretty much about made me cry. You guys do an awesome job. Thanks.

@A.S In Islam, lying is forbidden. The way you are speaking shows who you are . { Turn away from the ignorant } Allah says. I have no time to teach u history , I will turn away from ignorance. I don't have the time or even the intention to prove anything to you. Allah says ( the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.) Believe what you want , say what you want , but I won't waste my time with someone who can't use their mouth and words with courtesy and politeness. Social networking sites have allowed everyone to claim whatever they want, to say whatever they want even without knowing, they have allowed lies and fabricated them, and therefore I will not take your words seriously. As for what I said, it is not my words, but the archive of Islamic history that was written by real scholars who speak what they know and do not speak randomly. baseness in speech is an attribute of ignorant people, not scholars.

@kimas bubbke at the age of 4 - 10 years is the most suitable for memorizing, children really don't need to understand much, because they are not ready to understand, they learn many things such as general knowledge and others, at least they memorize it and when they grow up they will understand automatically. the problem is when you are an adult it will be difficult to remember, because you are too busy working and the amount of information that comes to your brain.

@Mr2phones_ (1) Even if the Shah started it, it took a lot to expand and maintain/improve it. (2) Iran is a democracy despite how flawed it is, Singapore is considered a democracy despite a state machine ensuring one party wins. The US has similar funding among those who can win or not. (3) I have never said Iran was good, it is simply better than the Shah regime which is true on a multitude of levels statistically wise. (4) Corruption and hypocrisy will always exist, it’s terrible and both the Shah and current regime both have these aspects. (5) Stating I don’t know something isn’t the same as the actual truth of the matter.
Mr2phones_
Mr2phones_ 7 aylar önce
@Made A Channel Just Cause I Can you know nothing about Iran, respectfully. I think it’s best you stay silent and observe what others say when it comes to the state of the country due to the revolution. The shah, even though he wasn’t democratic and was brought in by the United States, was still 10 billion times better for Iran. Education rates rising is due to globalization of the country and the growth of cities which was a process that was already started in the 1920s. None of the credit goes to the Islamic republic which is against education unless it aligns with their Middle Ages world view. There is no democracy in Iran. Once again, this just shows that you are not aware. Go do some research on the members of the government who are “voted in” and even the ones who aren’t. They are all a part of a tight knit group that is funneling billions and billions of dollars out of Iran for their own benefit. Their children live in western countries and have the privilege of pursuing degrees in western universities. They do not abide by what they preach. The shah had his own problems and was not perfect. However, he was not anywhere near this bad. When the people of Iran revolted, they were not all revolting for an Islamic government. The Mullahs ruined the one opportunity for an actual democracy with moderately secular principles.

One day, maybe there will be a global golden age, where the philosophies and theologies and attitudes of the world's peoples will be oriented towards friendliness and good will. So all the people of the world might come together and recognize the commonality between them, and all of them argue amongst themselves not because they hate each other but because they respect each other and want to both learn from and challenge each other's ideas in a productive and beneficial way. And no one goes hungry when there is food, nor is anyone sick from a treatable disease, nor left homeless when there are empty beds. And then maybe it won't matter who's right and who's wrong, because we'll all be doing what's right. Isn't that better for us, and isn't it what we all want? Inshallah, there will be such a time for a while

I understand that this is an introductory episode and mostly focused on philosophers, which was properly put, but one cannot forget to mention Ibn Al-haytham when talking about Islam Golden Age, the man is literally the founder of methodological science, the Scientific Method, which is the standard of modern science of today that made science transform from philosophy into experimentation and research. He is a legend in the history of science and unfortunately rarely mentioned today. He also made splendid discoveries and studies too, such as the nature of light, human eyes, eye surgery, lenses, the concept of Camera (Qomrah) etc.

Great documentary! I'm from East Africa (Kenya) and our national and co-official language, Swahili, borrows significantly from classical Arabic (including the word Falsafa for philosophy, hadithi for story etc) due to extensive Arabic presence beginning from this Golden Age and extending till the 1500s when Europeans such as Portuguse started venturing in the Indian ocean. In fact, the Arabs left such an impression on the locals, that the Swahili word for civilization is "Ustaarabu", which basically means "like an Arab"

You have no idea how much this (as yet) two-pronged series has brought me joy and wonder, and how persistently it has motivated me to go out there and research, during days such difficult as the last. There is nothing which gives me as much hope as humanity's insistent displays through history of its passion for knowledge and of devotion to the means and the cause of making it widespread. How much do we owe them? These men - scholars, slaves, enthusiasts - have given the ultimate test of devotion to the human spirit however warped their motives, and however warped their circumstances. They believed in making the world better for another humanity in the future, and that, to me, is akin to a devotion for humanity itself. Please, continue! And thank you, for your work.

Such ignorance in these comments. Most people that ever lived aren’t even worthy to walk on the dirt Ibn Tamiyyah stepped on. But the hate is expected because Ibn Tamiyya demolished all the flawed ideologies that some Muslims ignorantly took from pagan worshippers like the Greeks. So haters, it’s understandable why y’all hate him so much, but SubhanAllah, his knowledge and his collections of books have survived through time and still going strong to this day. While those people who fought him and imprisoned him until he died in jail, their names aren’t even remembered. And if someone mentions their name it’s to curse them for their worthless philosophies and crimes they committed.

I’ve heard people try to diminish the accomplishments of this time period because they essentially collected the knowledge of other places, which is like saying that libraries before the internet weren’t important because they didn’t write the books they collect. Without those collections and commentaries there wouldn’t have been a renaissance for who knows how long.

The entire european englightment is built on the shoulders of ancient knowledge. Definitely shouldn't discredit them and anyone who says so is dubious, i'm quite well versed in western history, culture and philosophy but have to admit i'm largely ignorant about Islamic history apart from a few such as ibn sina who comes up in physics. I'm looking into it now and it's quite fascinating, whatever ones view on Islam we absolutely cannot deny their contributions to the modern world.

Love the content and the mode in which it is delivered. The infographics must have taken absolutely ages to make and I am left in awe. I'm honoured that Islam is being highlighted and I'd go so far as to say concentric in this portrayal of the expansion of knowledge and thought the world over. I often look at the world today and loose myself in thought over the way islamic leaders decisions influence that of governments today, such as, English becoming the global language of commerce. I think the translation movement proved that global dominion can only really be achieved if everyone is able to communicate in a universal language and he who is able to push his language as superior will ultimately become the exclusive economic superpower. On the flip side. It also suggests the time of islamically influenced and guided sciences are past and that perhaps Islam hasn't got anything else to offer. I am of the opinion that this is a fallacy and the world at large still benefits massively from Muslim's influence in every sector. Islam is a timeless religion and I pray it's followers will continue to contribute towards the advancement and improvement of humankind the world over.

Beautiful video, with great material! This barely scratches the surface of Islamic Golden Age, so looking for to the rest of the series! Also, I hope you will cover the decline as well ... Look forward for support from myself. ps. Memorizing Qur'an might be an arduous process, but not "torturous" (at least to most) --- I'm 33 and started Hifdh (process of memorizing the Qur'an cover to cover) last year, and it is a source of spiritual comfort :)

@hiOOxkr magkis Never learn ? The irony in the statement. 😂😂 What can I say read up of the Byzantine influence on Islamic civilization and the Byzantine preservation of classical text. If that’s too hard google image Hagia Sofia and blue mosque. Thankfully the Byzantine cathedral like the Hagia Sofia stand today as a constant reminder of the architectural impact Byzantines had on Islam. - you can visit the Hagia Sofia yourself it’s no lie. Byzantine mosaic is there too it’s amazing illustrations of Byzantine greatness

@Arberor" Here is a recipe for producing medieval dark age philosophers: Combine classical pagan philosophy, mainly Greek but also in its Roman versions, with the new Christian religion. Season with a variety of flavorings from the Jewish and Islamic intellectual heritages. Stir and simmer for 1300 years or more, until done." Midlevel thinkers were mostly theologians and i can give you horrific philosophic theories that would be considered barbaric today.

Would love to see the unification of Muslim lands once more. The Sykes-Picot agreement and the disease of nationalism has really set the Muslim world back a few centuries. 2 billion Muslims, vast area of land, potentially the largest army in the world with a incredibly young population alongside have vast amounts of natural resources, really would be great to see how this would transpire under a single leader and open borders.

Amazing video! More people need to know the many contributions the islamic world has made to humanity. Their work on preservation alone deserves all the praise, but the open nature of their aproach to human knowledge led to the development on so many areas. To put it simply, if Europe at that time had the same aproach, we'd be living in the year 3000(?) Grettings from a philosophy student from Chile :)

The biggest lesson from the Golden age is that free thought and respect in difference of opinions in the society made that society progressive. There has to be a balance of all thoughts in a healthy society to keep it on the road to progress. Extreme inclination and biasness towards an idea or group of people demolishes any society. If we look around us, this balance of all different cultures and thoughts is what keeping the progress steady. One might come up with an idea that in God's great universe, everything is created in perfect balance.

It's nice to learn about this interesting topic. Here in Spain there was a similar movement during the Middle Ages centered around the "School of Translators of Toledo". As the name suggests, it was a place in the ancient capital that saw the translation of many classic Arabic texts into Romance languages, and viceversa.
