So i just saw this test roaming around on youtube so I decided to give it a spin! My overall score is around 37/45 on my best estimate with scores of 14/15 on A1-A2, 13/15 on B1-B2 and 10 on C1. Overall, i feel pretty satisfied with my results as I have been through a lot of insecurities over the past months or so about my english level of I was even bilingual in the first place, hopefully, this can make me feel a bit better about my english level and cheers to those who are struggling or are insecure about their english level as even if your english sucks, you have to know that it doesn't matter if you can't get some things right. As long as you can clearly express youe ideas, you are bilingual. SIGAMOS ADELANTE!!!!

This "test" contains multiple errors. One such error is as follows: "Alex was so tired. She could scarcely keep his eyes open." Other errors are not as obvious. As an editor and ESL teacher, I feel frustrated for those investing their time in an effort to learn a new language, only to be confused by training modules that contain misinformation. Grammarly instantly comes to mind when considering an app that frequently gets it wrong.
@lingportal
@lingportal 3 aylar önce
Dear Paul Walker, thank you! The phrase "errors are not as obvious" makes me smile. 😀 Students are writing the same: 'watch or see" - dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/look-at-see-or-watch "arrive to or arrive at" - www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage "will eat" - This isn’t a hypothetical scenario, Such forms which are sometimes called the real conditional can be found in detective stories, for example: “If the robber left by the window, there will be footprints in the flowerbed”, said Sherlock Holmes. Please, specify your list of "not as obvious errors" And, finally, Alex - yes, sorry for a minor slip! Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them. Bruce Lee 😀

I have always been sure that one should say Arrive AT the airport, am I not right?
@lingportal
@lingportal 4 gün önce
'Arrive to' or 'Arrive at' So then, to summarize where we have, ahem, arrived as of this point in our exploration: 'arrive to' was common enough to be criticized from the late 18th century, rare enough to be identified as obsolete in the late 20th century, and common enough again in the second decade of the 21st century to be noted by lexicographers (such as yours truly) again. It all makes us very curious about these words. Given all this, we can only arrive to the conclusion that English is always full of surprises. (We can still of course arrive at that conclusion as well.) www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/arrive-at-vs-arrive-to-usage May you find joy in discovering the richness of English literature, from classic novels to contemporary poetry.

I scored 40/45 in this absolutely amazing test at the age of 13... I appreciate you letting me know my position and where I stand ❤ And also one minor mistake made in the video at 18:31, ig you could see that Alex was a she and then described as a he, so that's not exactly right I'd say, Perhaps, if i sound rude, my apologies. Good test. To make it even better, you might check the writing on the slides, sometimes an article or other little word is missing (truth- the truth for example). In the last listening exercise, the voice is not very clear, so finding out about the book title (especially if you are not familiar with the author and the book) is hard. It sounds a bit like 'South'.

My `English Level` suffices well enough for me. I am English and am more acomplished in its spoken and written forms than most of my fellows. Such was not always true. I was a poor scholar during my junior days - and have not advanced in any particular direction toward brilliance since those days.

6:26 Just one moment. I'm calling foul here. From the conversation, one cannot tell whether Alex has a serious illness or not. He might be more ill than he realizes; he might only have a minor ailment; he might be lying to get the day off. Depending on one's inference, true, false and not given are all correct. We simply don't know the true state of Alex' health.
@lingportal
@lingportal 4 aylar önce
Dear author! Thank you for your comment. Let me explain why the answer is "false." The test required choosing the statement's correct "true or false" option. In the dialogue, Alex responds to the boss, saying, "I'm not sure but I don't feel well." This means that based on Alex's words ("I don't feel well"), he doesn't have a serious illness; he just wants to take a day off to go to the doctor and find out the cause of his discomfort. Therefore, the answer is "false" because there is no mention of a serious illness in the dialogue at all. I hope that this explanation can help you understand the test answer. Stay with us and enjoy learning English. Best regards, the Lingportal team.

A remark: What is the noise? What ....just ...? Among the 3 possibilities, you suggest the following as the only correct answer: What "has" just "happened". But the expression: "What did just happen?” can also be used as an emphatic question.
@lingportal
@lingportal 4 aylar önce
Dear MaziarPersian! Thank you for your remark. In British English, the adverb of frequency "just" is typically not used in the past simple tense. We use the present perfect tense to talk about a finished event or state in the very recent past. We often use ‘just, yet, still and already’ with the present perfect because they are related to the present moment. learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/b1-b2-grammar/present-perfect-just-yet-still-already#:~:text=Just%20used%20with%20the%20present,you%20ring%20him%20back%2C%20please%3F dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/present-perfect-simple-i-have-worked?q=Present+perfect+simple%3A+uses k.

Dear FactBaba, Thank you for your comment. 😀 Let’s look at the parts of this sentence closer: The first part points out that bread wasn’t bought yesterday, in other words, “there is no bread at home”. Having known that we can make the conclusion “we will eat nothing”. Such forms which are sometimes called the past real conditional can be found in detective stories, for example: “If the robber left by the window, there will be footprints in the flowerbed”, said Sherlock Holmes.. All the best 😀

No, this is not correct at all. Google « Past Real Conditional » to see that you can’t use the future tense « will eat » after a past conditional like that. The test is wrong and confuses the Future Real Conditional with the Past Real Conditional. The correct answer is “would eat”, B. Here’s another example from an advanced grammar book of the Past Real Conditional, “If Mark paid us a visit, we would let you know.” Notice that you don’t employ the future tense.

Dear Eric Lind, Thank you for your comment! 😀 English is always full of surprises, ha-ha😀 Spoken language and written language are not sharply divided but exist on a continuum. Standard spoken English grammar will therefore be different from standard written English grammar in many respects if we consider ‘standard’ to be a description of the recurrent spoken usage of adult native speakers. What may be considered ‘non-standard’ in writing may well be ‘standard’ in speech. assets.cambridge.org/97805215/88461/excerpt/9780521588461_excerpt2.pdf Good luck with your English learning journey!

@@lingportal I agree but the exam is one of written grammar and thus a question of rule. I am a native English speaker and the deployment of the future tense here sounds very odd to me. I double checked with 5-6 grammar sites and not a single one lists an example with the future tense.

Perfect! 😀 You should be proud. There are several tricky questions in this test? for example: 'Arrive to' or 'Arrive at' So then, to summarize where we have, ahem, arrived as of this point in our exploration: 'arrive to' was common enough to be criticized from the late 18th century, rare enough to be identified as obsolete in the late 20th century, and common enough again in the second decade of the 21st century to be noted by lexicographers (such as yours truly) again. It all makes us very curious about these words. Given all this, we can only arrive to the conclusion that English is always full of surprises.
