The world's major powers agree: the resources of Antarctica should be exploited peacefully. They have promised to promote peace and scientific research in Antarctica, and to protect its environment. But is this spirit real, or just a lot of talk?
This documentary features interviews with researchers, activists, diplomats, and military personnel from Spain, Russia, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, and the United States. There's been much debate over how to share control of resources in Antarctica, which is the world's oldest ecosystem. Critics say that behind the scenes, a game of high-stakes poker is underway. Could this competition end in armed conflict? Or will Antarctica serve as a model for peaceful international cooperation? This film addresses these complicated issues with in-depth analysis, accompanied by magnificent images of the Antarctic landscape. The documentary's soundtrack was composed by Javier Weyler, former drummer of the Welsh rock band, the Stereophonics.

Thanks DW for this great documentary which amongst other things provides detail insight into the human beings and our destructive tendencies towards nature in our quest for additional resources even if the ones we already had have because a curse to us. I wish the consensus ban on mineral explorations in the Antarctica will last for another 1million years. Why looking to prospect resources even in the Antarctica when we know for certain that such actions would bring us closer faster to our own destruction via climate change? Oil giant British Petroleum (BP) has sold off and left the Arctic Alaskan because the permafrost supporting the oil extraction infrastructure is warming and thawing fast that in few years everything could collapse. Is this not suppose to be a lesson to seriously consider before commencing another exploration activities in the Antarctica? When do we ever put sustainability first before profits?

I congratulate this group for their accurate representation of Antarctica. I concur with many of their conclusions. The situation with visitors is out of control, I know because I was one. In 2010 I was a guest aboard the cruise ship "Star Princess" to Antarctica. Fortunately we never disembarked, the reason given that there were too many of us (3,000) which simply was not possible to do. I had no problem with that because all you could possibly do is trample about and take photos of penguins. But you would inflict serious damage to the land by allowing hoards of humans to just mull about. I think some people just want the right to say they set foot on Antarctica. The place is so huge, just being next to it in the water is just as good.

When the tourist began talking about the trash she found, my heart sank at the realisation that even in the most pristine and sacred places there are some people that will litter.

As an environmentalist and working in the environmental field I have always wanted to visit Antarctica. I am aware of the impacts tourists can have on pristine environments. How about having the tourist do some volunteer work with the scientists. Make it compulsory so that only people that are really passionate about the environment would go.
