This channel might be one of the best things that has ever happened on the internet. The quality of animation, narration, writing, music... It's far beyond what any other educational channel has ever achieved, and it somehow keeps getting better with time. I have nothing but massive respect for whoever is running this spectacle.

@Sebi Nm I follow a ton of pop sci and different communicators, I think the best content I've seen is WSF lectures, Don at fermilabs subatomic story series, and pbs spacetime in no particular order. But SEA is great for pure entertainment because of his big, beautifully written documentary style productions. He's like a soft spoken british Degrasse, without any of the sass. Love him. I think they're all better content than kurzgesagt. This channel is like dipping your toes into a few interesting ideas here and there, its cute to look at, entertaining enough to eat to, good for bedtime noise.

8:10 Yeah, an atom is really mostly empty space. Those models shown in schools aren't to scale. It also brings up the concept of what has been done in sci-fi or superhero media, molecular phase shifting. Make your molecules vibrate in a certain way so you could pass through most other solid objects. Some cases it won't work. Like one time J'Onn J'Onnz / The Martian Manhunter tried to do that on a barrier and was halted and said it has a multi-dimensional interface.

I'd love to see the reverse of this video and see how the universe would look if we were super giant like the way the grass was as big as the universe when we got super small Mabey it would give us a better perspective of how the universe looks with all the galaxys planets suns black holes all shrunk and pushed closer together as we grow in size

I think it would have been worth mentioning just how small the Planck length actually is. Our adventurers pressed their shrink button a total of only four times to get down to the size of an atomic nucleus. But they would have to press it SEVEN *MORE* TIMES in order to reach the Planck length! And even then, the Planck length would appear to be the length of a marble.

@Fervidor That fact (that humans are middle sized) could, in my view, be some kind of indication that the RANGE of our possible exploration (getting any information whatsoever) is determined by our size. This, for me, makes size a basic parameter in our world (rather than e.g. dimensions). The only other parameter (“dimension”) in our world is time.
Fervidor
Fervidor 26 gün önce
I think it was VSauce who once pointed out that in proportion to the largest thing that exists (the entire universe) and the smallest (the Planck length) we humans end up more or less in the middle. So, on a universal scale we're actually average size.
idegteke
idegteke Aylar önce
When this imaginary shrinking reaches a certain level (Planck length?), your originally sized self will get so huge and therefore so vastly far away that no information could ever reach your ever smaller avatar - and that must be the smallest you can ever get WITHOUT leaving your original world completely. This is the inner end of the observable universe, somewhere deep down in the subatomic.

Something I have always been confused by: Why does so much media keep showing that when you see the world from the eyes of a small thing, time moves slower, Like everything bigger is slower to you Does it actually make sense in terms of science or is it just easier to show scale when it’s like that? cuz my brain doesn’t really understand it lol

Yes, some animals perceive time more slowly. Have you seen the speed and accuracy that small birds fly with? Experiencing time more slowly than humans is the only way to explain it.

Heheh, very cool. I love the button-pushing analogy! Great way to tie it to an imaginable physical experience. I think you missed a trick, though, and wish you'd mentioned how many more times we had to push the button to get from atomic scale to Planck scale. For anyone reading this... to go from human scale to atomic scale, we hit the button 4 times. If each arrow is a button push then we went: meters (human) -> millimeters (insects) -> micrometers (cells) -> nanometers (molecules) -> picometers (atoms) From there, it's -> femtometers (nucleon/gluon scale) -> attometers (?) -> zeptometers (??) -> yoctometers (???) -> 10^-27 (????) -> 10^-30 (?????) -> 10^-33 (100x Planck scale so the quantum foam would be fingertip-sized). How's that for mind-blowing? Seven more times we had to push that button to get to the Planck scale, the smallest scale that has any physical meaning at post-Big Bang energy levels outside of black holes. The other direction goes meters (human) -> Kilometers (parks) -> megameters (nations) -> gigameters (planetary systems) -> terameters (planetary orbits) -> petameters (outer solar system) -> exameters (local stars) -> zettameters (galactic scale) -> yottameters (supercluster scale) -> 10^27 (visible universe scale, currently) If you weren't counting... that's 11 button pushes to get to the smallest scale relevant to our existence, and only 9 to the biggest. That's right. Human scale is just under _half way_ in between the size of the universe and the size of the quantum foam... to the _larger_ side. It's ants who are kind of around the median possible size. Amazing!

I've been thinking about this a lot recently and it's so cool to see kurzgesagt was thinking it too and teaching more knowledge as he did. We're just big enough that we can survive reliably enough to dominate a planet, yet not too big that we can't see smaller things like ants. If we were, say, ten times or a hundred times bigger and had a planet big enough to sustain us, we would probably be calling the atom some small creature that steals sugar from our platter before we can put it in our tea, and the reality of quarks and string theory would never come to be.
Brian Cherry

It would seem possible that with a large enough frame of reference, you could watch light move across the galaxy. Perhaps at that scale, even the planets would seem to wobble, and pop in and out of existence, much like the quantum foam suggested.

Let's see if I got this straight. So the reason why bumblebees "shouldn't be able to fly" is because someone forgot to factor in the increased density of air at their size?
Topet Hernaez
Topet Hernaez Aylar önce
@User 2C47 which technically means they aren't pilots of any kind either and are not subject to having a pilot's license 😂

User 2C47 Aylar önce
@Topet Hernaez If you are able to fly yourself, you are not "a device that is used or intended to be used for flight in the air" (14 CFR § 1.1) and therefore not an aircraft. The FAA has no jurisdiction.

The whole thing was a myth to begin with really. We understand the aerodynamics of a bee’s flight just fine and have for ages. I’m pretty sure the bee movie popularised that phrase.

My god I can’t believe how nobody is mentioning how beautifully the video was ended off at 10:12. I also give huge props to whoever composed the soundtrack, it really makes these words hit home. “If you look up, the universe is large and strange. So incredibly large and strange. But if you look down, into the tiny and and extremely tiny, the universe seems even larger, and even stranger. In the end, the perfect place might be where you are right now - not too big, not too small” Whoever writes the script for Kurzgesagt, I truly appreciate how you end off videos each time. Really leaves me thinking about it and more so appreciating life in of itself. Thank you everyone in the Kurzgesagt team!!!

It was a beautiful ending, which is why I was disturbed by the abrupt cut to the advertising of their merch. I wish they left in at least a few seconds of silence, with the fading echoes of the music.

@Wottage its precisely because of its perfection that god probably doesnt exist. Cause then, who created god? Surely it must be made of atoms and quantum foam? But then who created the quantum foam that makes up god? And who created the god that created the quantum foam that made god? So the simplest and most obvious explanation is that there is no intelligent design (things just happened because its a neverending multiverse of big bang explosions that repeat over and over), or its an advanced simulation (similar to The Matrix) made by our descendants who wanted to recreate the ancient universe for fun or for scientific research

We had a show like called, The Magic School Bus. The teacher would take her class on field trips in... a magic school bus that could shrink and grow and fly. Through that show, I learned how friction works, how chemical reactions in baking work, and lots of other things. If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to restart that show. But we're really to have Kurzgesagt, too. It's miles ahead and covers modern science topics

@HyperBass ♥️ Eternity somewhere HyperBass. Salvation is a free gift 🎁 Ephesians 2 KJV 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Revelation 21 KJV 1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Or Revelation 20 KJV 14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Jesus Christ loves you! ♥️know♥️ 1 John 5 KJV 1 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 Corinthians 15 KJV 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Romans 3 KJV 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

At 6:12 and onwards you suggest that scaling the ultra small up to human size is impossible as it would break the speed of light (paraphrased). Now I immediately understood why scientists have been unable to find the mythical 'unified theory of everything', because as you say in this video, scaling is not possible. On a side note, it also means we'll never have the 'Honey, I shrunk the kids' dilemma in real life. Great video as always, thank you!

We just adopted an 8 week old kitten and I've the last few days wondering what the world must look like from his size. He's so tiny everything must seem massive to him. This was a fun way to think about scale and how a walk across the room feels like nothing to me, but could feel like walking a city block to him.

Hey 👋 guys. Jesus say, "But when the Son of man comes, will there be any faith on earth?" If you follow the Bible you will know that most all of the 1,800 prophecies has come to pass. Once the final few happen Jesus Christ will return. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Way the truth and the life. He accepts you no matter where you've been.
