"Not possess the East" )) this is an explanation of a 21st century illiterate person. in the 19th century they spoke "in the way (get along-make friends) the east", i.e. "in friendship and openness with the East and Asia and their countries". this is the exact opposite of owning the east.))
@langedocalgvazil8903
@langedocalgvazil8903 2 yıl önce
Floks 700 - The name of the city "Vladivostok" is translated from Russian as OWN, to rule over the East😋 - although, if you really want to, you can paraphrase this name and as "To be in harmony, in harmony with the East." Russia has two such cities with similar names - Vladivostok in the Far East and Vladikavkaz in the North Caucasus. The name of this second city can be translated as "To own, rule over the Caucasus" - or, "To be in harmony, in harmony with the Caucasus". There is a funny ambiguity in the definition of these names.😎 There is also a third city in Russia with a similar name, it is called "Vladimir" and this city is about a thousand years old, its name can be translated as "To own the World, to rule over the world" - but you can just see in this name one of the old Slavic male names - this also has a certain initial ambiguity.☺

There was time I remember, some workers joined on "brigades" from Bulgaria, in Siberia and further east, that time means good money for them . And russian shops were selling Bulgarian vegetables everywhere, not anymore. Yes its pity politicians makes everything difficult, I was always considering your nation as very close friends but politicians do their best in building new iron walls.. it's only Serbia in Balkans where you still feel like there are good friends around regardless where you go. Very sad. hope it will change.

Thank you for a great documentary! I have been thinking recently that Vladivostok must be an intriguing place to live for Europeans at the time when the world centre of gravity is moving to Pacific. Literally European city in the Far East. You answered most of the questions I had. I agree with your conclusion that the city looks under managed, but great to see people taking matters into their own hands, especially wrt. cleanup. Russia should do more about the roads and infrastructure, beyond the bridges which seem to have been done primarily for the show.

I am so surprised how much each larger city has modernized since Soviet / post-Soviet times when I lived there. I will say in ways the old culture was very refreshing. It would have been nice to have these advancements.

Why are people from the west so obsessed with everything having to be "modern and upscale"?! I think it has to do with some kind of consumptionist obsession.

This is excellent! I commend you on your pure bilingual ability. Amazing! Also your interviewing skills and choice of content. I would love to live there. My only hold back? I don't speak Russian (yet) and am already 62 years old. I wish I'd known this place 20 years ago. I'd be having a lovely retirement and be a tour guide to any English speaking tourists. I know how that rolls. I am from Hawaii.

I really appreciate that you took the time to interview locals and tourists alike. When I visited Kyrgyzstan and Kazakstan, the locals expressed the same sentiment- these lesser known Russian/Former Soviet regions just want to share their pride of joy of their cultural identity with the world. It's unfortunate when government fails to step up to do more for its people- something as simple as enough trash cans and national park maintenance. Considering Vladivostok's unique geographic location to Asia and the Pacific Ocean too, it can be so much more. Thank you for this wonderful video that got to the heart and history of things.

What a lovely city Vladivostok is!! Had been meaning to know about this city. Nice people and beautiful landscape. Local authority needs to take care of the city, make better public transport, build houses and reduce number of cars in the city. Amazing video!

Molodets! I lived in Vladivostok for 3 months in 1998 and returned for a brief visit in 2006. The city looks vastly improved and the bridges I'm sure make a huge difference. DVGU looks spectacular. Too bad that garbage is still a big problem, though. I'm sure the government is as corrupt as its always been. Thanks for doing this, I learned a lot.

Hello, started with your moscow documentary, then watched for st petersburg. This is my best. You mentioned the locals were flabbergasted when the city and region received a massive uplift after various requests, I would say I was flabbergasted when I saw how the govt. could do so much in a short period of time! If I compare this city with other frontier cities in other places of the world, I would say its one of a kind.
