I grew up in Iceland in the 90s. Never, EVER, did it even cross my mind that someone could come into my school and start shooting. Why? Because it doesn't happen in Iceland. It has never happened, in Icelands' history. And that history spans 1,000 years. I graduated in 2004. Since then, it still hasn't happened. I honestly cannot wrap my head around being an American child who has to attend school, knowing every day that this could happen. Or be an American parent, to send your kids off to school, knowing you might never see them again. America, what are you doing?
Warsie
Warsie 2 aylar önce
@Katrín Yea, meaning Icelandic society had plenty of violence you had legalized duels so it makes sense that people with a grudge didn't have the need to attack a school. They could challenge their enemies. While many U.S. states still allow for trial by combat technically it's hard to get a judge to agree to this.

It comes down to the fact that those in leadership positions don't care about us ... students and educators are targets of hate, racism, and bullying on a daily basis. I'm retiring after 23 years because my heart can't endure this type of abuse, neglect, and danger. I pray for healing, peace, and hope for all the families im pacted by these horrific events. May God bless you all. 🙏

I can't imagine what it must feel like living in a country where anyone can go buy a high velocity assault rifle and one day decide to go on a shooting rampage. Crazy. Americans must be proud to live in a country which gives more importance to the gross profit it makes from its weapon industry than to the lives of its citizens.

One of the leaders Biden met on his trip was the new Australian Prime Minister. We had a number of mass shootings until in 1996 a gunman shot and killed 35 people. The conservative government, in defiance of the protests of some of its base, but with the support of the overwhelming majority of the Australian people brought in a ban on semi-automatic weapons and other measures. We have not had a mass shooting since.

It's been almost ten years since I graduated high school and I distinctly remember being in class when I had heard about Sandy Hook-and in an almost sick twist of irony, I was in my semester-long American Government class that the seniors in my school had to take-and I remember the thoughts that ran through my head, and may have utter to myself under my breath. They weren't words of shock, or words of anger, or of fear, or even sadness, but rather words of *resignation,* my thoughts were along the lines of _"Of Course! Of Course This Happened! It's Not Like We've _*_Done_*_ Anything To _*_Stop_*_ This!"_ The fact that nearly *ten **_years_* ago, a seventeen-year-old kid felt that cynically-minded about our country, culture, and politics-with exorbitantly good reason to do so-should really say something to you about this whole topic. That is, of course, if the hundreds (bare-minimum) of innocent lost souls don't say even more to you.

I am tired of people giving their "thoughts and prayers". It is the most useless sentiment of all time. If people were really upset they'd be making endless phone calls to their representatives. But that might actually accomplish something.
Today Tmrrw
Today Tmrrw 2 aylar önce
@Mr. Duane I too my brother, have grown tired of the elects lies and deceit, their pandering words, their empty promises, however we mustn't become that which we despise, the time for change shall come when the understanding of us resides in the truth and the light. We as a people are but scattered and disoriented. Soon I agree those who sit on high shall fall in pits they have dug for us.
Today Tmrrw
Today Tmrrw 2 aylar önce
@Mr. Duane again my brother, you have eyes but seeth not, Ones consideration of his actions is free will, but does not free will seek influence from guidance, either way will not a man find the result of his choice? (Accountability) The most high, lord of hosts, is given thanks and praise for both success and failure. Thanks for his grace in our success, and his mercy in our failure. When you do wrong the sin(guilt) is yours and the repentance is as well, men have always tried to avoid blame. This is why the most high created a place for the damned There is no justification in doing wrong, there is only evil. The blessings(reward) when you do right Is yours. Your lens holds the vanity of ego. Did not others help you to succeed, are your failures without blemish unto others? Those who blame God, avoid their countenance in the matter? Look not to man to understand the most high, but lean on his word and understanding of his wisdom to see the light.
Mr. Duane
Mr. Duane 2 aylar önce
@Today Tmrrw There's a difference between considering your own actions, and praying for guidance on what actions you should take. The difference is perceived accountability. With my way, I am accountable and no one else. The guilt, if things go wrong is all mine. The emotional rewards if things go right is all mine. With your way, you unburden some of your guilt to whatever deity you prayed to or shared your reward if it went well. Perhaps this is why people can justify doing bad things? If their god is partially to blame, then they are not. I'm not saying prayer isn't good for you, I'm saying it does nothing for us. But I am sick and tired of politicians, and other selfishly motivated people offering their "thoughts and prayers" while neglecting to make the changes that only they can. "Thoughts and prayers" are their way of deflecting their own guilt.
Today Tmrrw
Today Tmrrw 2 aylar önce
@Mr. Duane again you lack understanding, prayer isn't just for times of desperation, but for moments of joy, circumstances seeking wisdom, instances of reflection, times of comfort, days of success, hours of sadness, seconds of bliss. At all times is prayer need. As an atheist do you not meditate? As an atheist do you not seek wisdom from a source? The problem is that people don't pray for instructions before acting, the nature of humanity no matter how "civilized" is still but a child in need of guidance. You are but fooled by the many heretics proclaiming the anointing of the most high. As an atheist do you look inward before acting? Where does the inner reflection lead you too? Be afraid not of the truth and the light. be humble in it's presence, and it shall be merciful to you. I judge not your choice, but I share this: A tree believes in that which helps it grow, A fly believes in that which stimulates the senses, A lion believes in that which upholds it power, Do you not believe that they all have faith in the same thing? Do you not believe in that which holds you whole in right measure?

The saddest thing is whenever I ask the question (to second amendment rights advocates) why is it okay for first graders to have to undergo active shooter drills, because that is something that only AMERICAN first graders go through (i.e. first graders in pretty much every other OECD country in the world DOESN'T have to go through active shooter drills), they LITERALLY don't see anything wrong with it, like it doesn't even register as a problem to/for them at all. THIS is how they have normalised the gun culture in the US where it is NORMAL to shoot at kids, ESPECIALLY in a school. And the whole thing is made even sadder whenever you juxtapose that with their fight against abortion rights and how they are "pro-life", meanwhile, we have all born witness to the massive destructive forces and how NOT pro-life guns ACTUALLY are in the US. It baffles my mind re: The American Taliban and how they think so much like the REAL Taliban.

Looking at this news item, I thank god that I live in the UK, where our children can go to school, safe in the knowledge that they will not be murdered by a mentally ill person using a military style assault weapon. He was given a deadly weapon as an 18th birthday present for god’s sake. The right to bear arms in 1791 had relevance then. Law enforcement was not as widespread as it is in modern times, and keeping a firearm in one’s home made sense. But now in the 21st century the second amendment requires urgent revision.

I think minds can be changed if the children can be lined up and viewed in open caskets for all to see. Most people don't react when they hear of a death: it's when they see with their own eyes that they can feel the pain. In feeling the pain and the guilt, gunmakers just might feel enough guilt to stop making assault weapons.

So true. This is a completely US thing. Never hear it anywhere else on earth where kids at school regularly get killed by all the guns out there. Even more unique to the US is the pushback on gun control in that country following mass killings. One of my good friends and talented cardiologist just got a job and fled back to the US with his beautiful wife and tiny daughter, where we both were 10 yrs ago before coming home to Africa. I wish him well, right there in Texas, but lord, I would never return to the US to practice with all the racism and guns. I just got through watching a video about the greed of big business putting profit above people's lives and I couldn't help but think about this latest mass shooting of innocent people, and that video was right. People that think profit is more important need to see how that is working out in this country, because it isn't the way things should be, nope!!!!! Having a gun at home for protection is one thing, but to use guns to massacre children, the elderly and teachers, plus innocent shoppers in a supermarket isn't right. I have noticed that the people who get loud about not having their guns taken away from them are males, and Republicans who are being paid by the gun makers and the NRA. The second amendment does give people the right to bear arms, but what that means is to protect only, not to go out and massacre everything and everybody just because they agree with you.

Step one, universal national background checks, Step two, single entry to all schools nearest offices with a camera doorbell. (we have this in Canada already due to just One kidnapping! ) Three arrest the gop for reckless endangerment of the entire public, and taking bribes from the gun lobby, and it is a bribe.

Mental health is one thing having such laxed laws allowing these to get hold of guns like its a pack of cigarettes is another thing. Kids killed in schools vs a ridiculous right to own a gun. Greatest country in the world they say 🤣🤣 dumbest I say! Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome, precisely what this gun law crap is!

Why in US it's easy to buy a gun I'm so disappointed on this hopefully the senator will convince to make a gun regulation law because in the Philippines if you are minor they will never allowed you to hold a firearm's unless if you are 25-above and you have a permit to carry a firearm and you have a certificate from the shooting instructor plus the price of firearms here was too high

You have had 27 school shootings in the US this year. And 200 + mass shootings in the US this year! And you can't figure out how to go about it .... Look at nearly every other country! We don't have either guns among civilians OR we don't have weapons of war, semi-automatic weapons, among civilians! You can't figure out what to do?? Vote out the politicians who refuse to even talk about your uniquely American problem!

My son has a daughter who just turned 5, and he called me up and cried. He said, "I want to move her to a safer country. Nothing is going to change here and it's just going to get worse. Why is there an inability to have measures that control fire arms?" I cried with him. We all feel the fear. Those kids, school teachers, parents, grandparents, communities - everyone grieving and full of fear. There is nothing fair about this. Nothing.

@✌talk 💯 correct. I just posed this question to a friend yesterday hypothetically asking, “I wonder how many Americans are going to start moving out of this country”? I traveled to Europe a few years ago and felt safer there than in my own country. I was devastated to return to the US.

I saw a CNN commentator say that he couldn't believe this keeps happening in the United States of America. I can't think of anywhere else in the world where this would happen over and over again except the United States of America.

Everytime i heard of mass shootings in the U.S. my first thought would be 'you're gonna have this problem as long as you don't have stricter gun control'. This is not the Land Of Freedom, but the Land of Too-Much-Freedom. How could someone have purchased assault weapons legally, let alone an 18-year-old? Gun stores? It's non-existent in most countries. Because there's no need to have one. How could selling weapons even be a local business? And what about safety in school, no guard houses at school entrances? No visitor's log to sign in before one enters the school compound during school hours?

I was a teacher in a district in which board policy was that if there were an armed intruder, the teacher was to disarm him or her. There was only one problem: No one ever shared that information with the teachers. Fortunately, that never happened.

'A uniquely American way of death' is a chilling statement that should make everyone in Congress stop and think about the gun legislation in their country. NO CHILD should EVER have to be terrified of going to school - NO PARENT should EVER be terrified to send their kids to school. Along with the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, America is hurtling back into the Middle Ages - there are so-called *third world countries* who are more societally mature than America appears to be right now.
