Houston was my city for a brief couple of years. I'd consider coming back. 1. Diverse city, but is there cooperation and harmony among all those different groups? 2. Keep working on mass transit. Glad to see the progress that's been made since I left. 3. Keep Houston affordable. 4. Keep providing a wide diversity of jobs in a wide diversity of industries.
Neiandre Samuel's
Neiandre Samuel's Yıl önce
All 4 of those are Non existent now 1. Surprisingly Diversities somewhat get along but not all the way. 2.Houston still hasn't built a Commuter rail system, and most likely ever wont because they rely on the oil industry for their For their Economic profits, an to keep the oil and.industry going, the city would have to be car centric...so they ain't build No Rails anytime soon. 3. Houston is getting very expensive...of course with Mostly blue collar jobs, lack of zoning things will be cheap but its just gonna get nor expensive 4 there is no wide Diversity of jobs in Houston... It's all oil,Gas, medicine, Shipping, Construction or aero space..that's about it

@BLACK MAN Since you are LAST on the ‘dollar train’ that left the station 10 months ago, let me SET YOU STRAIGHT: I am a Black/African-American man! SURPRISED? I was born and raised in New Orleans of DIRECT créole decent that I can identify with DNA. Want to see? In my classes, at the university I teach, ONE neck roll, rolling of the eyes, and ANY ghetto phrase gets you dropped from the MBA program I teach in AND removed from the graduate program IMMEDIATELY. As a professor, I HAVE the right and privilege to do so. I’m KNOWN for doing it! It’s CLEARLY stated in my syllabus. So, Mr BLACK MAN, want to try me? I promise you I will leave you crying and SPEECHLESS. I ALWAYS win! I take pride in calling out THUGS like you who give us black men a bad name. Don’t let my double doctorate degrees or the way I dress fool you. That would be your BIGGEST mistake!

@Teeyana Ramsey He never said Houston didn't have a rail system..he said Houston doesn't have a Commuter Rail system..which is true. What Houston has is basically a tram System..which all major cities should have...but what Houston doesn't have is a Commuter rail system... Even San Antonio is pursuing a Commuter rail .. Houston will be the only city Without one. And having a Amtrak doesn't make up for lack of commuter rail. This i why Houston has some of the worst Traffic in the US because most people in Houston rely on cars.

@Neiandre Samuel's Houston doesn't suck you on the other hand do because you lied about Houston not having a rail system in place Houston has the Metro light rail system in place and Houston will soon be home to the first bullet train commuter rail system in the U.S. leaving Houston and commuting to Dallas and Houston also has the Amtrak rail system in place to so you need to stop lying on Houston with this issue ok!

Houston is like New York of the south.. and European London : people diversity , huge migration , just like London have bad weather :, rainy wet and cloudy , ..the Houston got bad weather also IMO : very humid hot which is unbearable for many people and humid hot makes ton of bugs .. , one thing different is that Houston public transport is very small ,undeveloped ,while London and new York got very large robust public transport , ...all of them have very bad traffic... , did I miss something?
Brewzerr 2 yıl önce
Public transportation/transit is definitely the one area where Houston is WAY behind. They are adding new rail lines and expanding existing rail lines, but it’s all a bit late in the game. The city SHOULD have had the current lines in place about 35 years ago. It’s going to take a lot of work to get caught up to where it needs to be. It also doesn’t help that Houston keeps annexing more and more suburban areas. That puts a huge strain on infrastructure and slows down progress. Other than that though, Houston is a great and vastly underrated city.
Yura Mambat
Yura Mambat 2 yıl önce
Well you asked to answer. If you need public transportation, don't go to Houston, it is true. But if you are independent, most homes driveways packed with 4 cars and freeways are best. Very humid hot... for 3 summer months, rest of the year is way better than everywhere else. i used to it very quickly and I can't imagine myself in the north where I was with flu all winters and scenes with car crashes on youtube are shocking me... Life is less stressed here, homes way cheaper, money comes in with less efforts... You have city here, wealthy suburbs, beaches and miles of walkable seawall blvrd, intl airport and seaport. Houston is not for anyone, just like there's no place for all. But there's a reason why it is home for mlns.

Houston is a big city built in a pool....poor drainage, weird zoning and very exposed to the weather climate, the concrete covert pretty much the entire city....do your home work where are you going to buy or lease a house....check for public records about the zoning of floods and water problems....you need to drive longs distances.....I am sure this city offers plenty amenities......be smart....
Brewzerr 2 yıl önce
All cities are “covered in concrete”. What are you talking about? Also, there’s no “weird zoning” in Houston, because there’s no zoning ordinances. Not that it matters. Deed restrictions and land-use regulations function as de facto zoning in Houston. It really hasn’t developed much differently than the other big cities of Texas.

That's a bit too much spotlight to be shined on Houston. There's better cities in Texas, such as Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, and Corpus Christi. Yes, Houston is the most populous city in Texas, and the 4th in the U.S. No, that does not mean it's the best city in the world. To be honest, I don't personally imagine that there's one particular 'best' city in the world, but there are a few cities I highly recommend, and enjoyed while visiting/living. Well, I've only lived in one city in my life-time. I won't specify it, but I'll just say it's located in the heart of Texas.

“Organized and clean”? Uh... I love Houston, but that’s just simply not true. Houston’s urban fabric is very unpredictable and chaotic. Without zoning ordinances, developers can just build whatever they want, wherever they want. It’s a big free for all, and as a result there’s a serious lack of organization. It’s both a pro and a con. It keeps things interesting at least. Maybe in the suburbs it’s organized and clean, but in Houston-proper? No way.

The quality of life in Houston has taken a nosedive with the massive influx of people since the 2008 financial crisis. People need to leave their old attitudes in their failed places of origin. Just because it was fashionable to act like a self-important mook back in Ohio doesn't mean you should bring that show with you when you come to Texas. Come to learn, or stay where you are.
Brewzerr 2 yıl önce
Fightlikabrave - The irony there is that Houston was founded by two New Yorkers.
Brewzerr 2 yıl önce
CaesarinVa - Right, because before the sophistication, culture, and arts and literature capital of the universe... Ohio... enlightened all us knuckledragging yokels and taught us how to walk upright, it was just one big backwater trailer park. I’m literally laughing out loud at the thought of Ohio of all places bringing sophistication and high culture to Houston. Thanks for that.
Brewzerr 2 yıl önce
I’ve got news for ya... Houston has been getting massive influxes of new residents since long before 2008. I’m 53 years old, and clearly remember the big boom of the late 70’s and early 80’s, when Houston was not only the fastest growing city in America, but in the world. That boom period put the post-2008 one to shame. However, the point is that only a very tiny percentage of Houstonians can trace their ancestry back any further than 3 generations in Houston. The city has ALWAYS grown through boom and bust cycles, and any time there’s a boom period you’re going to get a lot of that “Well that’s how we did it back in ________” shit. Eventually those people adjust and change their tune. Point is, if you choose to live in Houston, then you’d better get used to transplants and their attitudes. That’s just the nature of things in a rapidly growing city.
Fightlikabrave 3 yıl önce
CaesarinVa This is what people are talking about.. Asswipes like you need to go back home. None of you idiots brought anything new to Houston except for your shitty attitudes.. We've been ahead in culture, art, science, technology, medical, & education for decades.. you insulting shmuck.

You have got to be kidding me. I haven't seen such propaganda bs since Goebbels was Hitler's Minister of (mis)Information. Houston is a fourth-rate city in a third-world country. I've lived in Washington DC, Rome, Paris and Manila and in a lot of other off-the-beaten path places (anyone ever live in Casper, Wyoming, or Cagayan De Oro, Philippines?), so I've got a pretty good idea of what constitutes a "livable" city and Houston doesn't even begin to meet the minimum criteria. Firstly, there's the weather. Its brutally hot from May to November. In fact, absent an asbestos wardrobe, Houston is so hot 6 months out of the year that you won't want to go anywhere during those months even if you did find something worth doing, which there isn't. Then there are the knuckle-dragging Neanderthals who think being able to open-carry while chugging a beer and slaloming down the road at 110mph are the best things imaginable. Forget about art, culture, literature, sophistication and all that panzy-assed, panty-waist, East Coast sissy-stuff. Houston is all about guns, beer, monster trucks (all of which are clinically recognized psychological coping mechanisms used by the sexually insecure and mentally infirm to compensate for their sexual inadequacies and gross ignorance). And did I mention the complete absence of civilized refinement and culture? Not to put too find a point on it but, In short, Houston is the turgid, pestilential backwater TS Elliot tried to warn us about in his seminal “The Wasteland". Anthropologists have discovered isolated tribes in the Amazon River basin whose sense of culture and art both quantitatively and qualitatively surpasses Houston's, which in reality isn't saying very much, open-sewer latrine that it is. So yeah, I'm bagging on Houston because it sucks and hurls, in that order. After two years in this God-forsaken hell-hole, I'm literally counting the days and minutes until my resurrection and return to civilization (5 days, 9 hours and 14 minutes). To give you an idea of just how much Houston sucks, I watched a youtube video the other day of some guy talking up Houston's better points (which, as far as I can tell, is that the city isn't the complete anus of all human existence, but its as close as I've ever come to it). Two of the things he talked up were the under-ground shopping mall and the shipping channel. Well my friend, if you're comparing an air-conditioned hole in the ground and a water-filled ditch to Capitol Hill, Notre Dame, the Trevi Fountain, the Eiffel Tower, Westminster Abbey or Barcelona’s Gotic Quarter, then you need to crawl out from under the rock you're living under and see some of the world.

I have to admit, this is a very eloquent bit of trolling (two things that VERY rarely mix), even if it’s quite a lot of embellishment and exaggeration. I at least got a good laugh from it.

Why does weather make Houston a non livable city? Detroit Chicago New York Minneapolis have white out blizzard conditions and snow storms frequently and people have been living there for centuries on end. As soon as you started with the weather as being a rason not to live in Houston I stopped reading your comment. You must be from L.A. lol.

CaesarInVa I think you are over reacting with your comment! I also have lived around the world, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Cork, Sydney, Austin, Los Angeles, now I live in Houston, yes, I love it! Every place is different dude, every place has its own essence, I think your life is what matters, your friends, the people around makes the place, I didn't like Austin Tx and people loved it there, didn't have that many friends and that is always imp! Now here in Houston people is more cosmopolitan, lots of museums, parks, live music, nice coffee places... you just need to give it a chance, not everyone is gonna love everywhere, but I don't think it should be compared with any of those monuments, those monuments are in different parts of the world with a totally different style of living and culture!

It does not even have a Subway or world class metro public transport system. The downtown is freaking quiet after 6 and there are not diverse cool hip neighborhoods in the city like that in Chicago or San Francisco. Its an ugly suburban town.
halfvolley11 Yıl önce
@Joe Martin I just found the city quiet after 6 pm -- which tells me how boring it is. The food is so bad. Come to Chicago!! I will take you to the best restaurants in the world.

Houston's downtown puts LA's to shame. Plus, it's greener, cleaner, and has water - lots of water.

Um... How's it for black people?
sophisticado100 3 yıl önce
I didn't find it disrespectful. I think it's a legitimate question. I live in California and I think it sucks for black people unless of course you have no identity and don't mind having your culture smashed by that of Asians and Hispanics who make sure their culture is well represented but many do not respect yours at all which is evident by the lack of African Americans in the work force in California and the decline in black population and black progress out west.

@Darius Robbins Well did you know Austin was ranked #1 of places to live in America? Texas as a whole doesn't suck why do you think people keep moving here?
90sRapFan 4 yıl önce
@Darius Robbins What part of Texas did you live in just out of curiosity?
90sRapFan 4 yıl önce
@Darius Robbins "All of Texas is about black and white" wrong again. Have you been to Austin or even Dallas or any big city in Texas? If anything you see more hispanics than African Americans.

It’s great to have pride but cmon. Houston is a dump, no character, no culture. A few uninspired skyscrapers surrounded by miles and miles of 12 lane highways and mindless urban sprawl. The only historic neighborhoods in Houston are rife with decay while Houston bulldozes their older areas and replaces them with more urban sprawl. Houston and Phoenix are the poster children for uncontrolled growth, zero urban planning and zero zoning laws. Just because Houston is 4th largest city by population means nothing. That is the ONLY thing that puts it in the category of NYC, LA and Chicago. Because outside of population it has nothing in common with those 3 cosmopolitan and extraordinary cities.

Pouty Yoongi - It’s the 4th biggest, behind NYC, L.A., and Chicago.
