From germinating 30,000 year old seeds to the effects of Type II diabetes on the National Health Service, Dr David Reilly MD's fast paced talk on how to unlock the potential of human healing is both fascinating and touching. Using the example of one of his patients, and with a moving twist at the end, David interprets 40 years of academic research into an amazing story.
David Reilly trained as a physician and a GP and evaluated aspects of complementary medicine and mind-body medicine. He approaches medicine and human caring in ways that emphasise the innate healing capacity in people, the factors that modify the healing response, and their interaction in the therapeutic encounter and relationship - ideas adopted as the core of The Fifth Wave document exploring future health in Scotland.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

As a healthcare practitioner of over 40 years I can say that this talk by Dr. Reilly is brilliant and spot on! I am in the United States and would love to see more of this dialogue happen here.

“Don’t take yourself so personally” and “understand how the mind works” incredibly powerful words for anyone battling anxiety or depression

After thirty years of working in ICU as an RN I know for certain that kindness shown the patient is an important part of the healing process.

Bringing balance to the suffering through compassionate connection and teaching self-care towards healing with self-compassion. Teach the parents this and have schools teach towards human health choices like this ☺👍👍

I've listened to thousands of TED talks till date, but THIS is the most life transforming one, and somehow it is closest to my own "inner belief system" so in many ways I totally understand and agree with the things he shared! God Bless You , and God Bless me & God Bless Us all.

‘Life responds to nurture.’ Be kind to yourself and everyone. And that means forgive both as well. Sending love to all reading this.

"Nurturing self compassion ", "finding a sustaining reason", "become the gardener of your own life / plant" are brilliant advice. Thank you Dr Reilly for encouraging us to open our hearts and connect to the healing energy of love.

This was one of the best lectures I have heard among the many awesome teachings in TEDX. I am married to a pediatrician and will share it with him for sure. I wish you would teach this in medical schools and to Therapists and Psychologists. Thank you for all these wonderful teachings. YOU ARE TEULY MAKING A DIFFERENCE and I will try to go to sleep earlier because if you.

What profound wisdom this doctor shared with us, in such a humble manner. There was this punchline at the end, that was so significant, but his mild manner didn't express it fully - Wow. I took so much from this, for my own work on wellness & healing. Hope people world wide get that there are better alternatives to the "there's a med4that" theory, and try simple, commonsense treatments, instead. Enjoyed the talk. Thanks, B. Well.

I enjoyed listening to Dr. Reilly's TED talk video from beginning to end. I activated my inner nurturing through prayers because only God heals when the doctor cannot find what is ailing you. All you need is to have Faith in God and start experiencing the healing.

Great talk. I’ve learned to self love and take the time to nurture myself and it’s made a huge difference. A ways to go but I’m on a new journey.

We had a bereavement in the family and my poor mother just couldn’t let go and this happened to her bladder so the doctors gave her a bypass for the rest of her life. I was lucky and discovered self healing and was able to overcome mine without surgery or medication.

Your comparison of the darkness people perceive inside themselves with the conditions surrounding a resting seed, as well as your invocation of other natural imagery, reminded me very much of the following poem by Louise Glück, called The Wild Iris. I've included it here, with the hope that you, and anyone who reads this post, may find it somehow useful and interesting:
