Come along for a walk around the extensive ruins of the Charters Towers Pyrites Works, constructed in the early 1880s to extract gold from complex sulphide ores using a chlorine solution. The works were abandoned in the early 1900s after cyaniding replaced chlorination as a simpler extraction method. The Pyrites Works closed under tragic circumstances and the structures were cannibalised for other ventures in the area. All of Towers Hill is on the Queensland Heritage Register. Thanks for watching and subscribing! Warren and Colleen.

Wonderful tour of this historic ruin, Warren! Love the history and the views of the area, beautiful! That any of the brick and masonry are still standing is such a tribute to the bricklayers and masons. What a job that must have been. That manager who went temporarily insane probably had been pushed by other situations at the mill that were not being addressed, and then to be told 25% of his income was now gone sent him over the edge. Only the lofty BODs lived high on the hog. The workers were probably barely getting by. Sad. ... Happy Holidays to you and Colleen! Cheers for now.

Thanks for your great comment WWG, yes no doubt there were no pay cuts for the BODs LOL. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023! Warren and Colleen.

Our mill in Waianae was said to have been proud of their stonework. It opened in 1878 and closed in 1946. The final demolition happened in the '90s. Very little was up when I first lived there in 1992. In 2018 a surviving structure, an 1897 hydropower plant collapsed. The Board of Water Supply seized it in a forced sale from the Capital Investment group that had purchased the Plantation. Ultimately Chinn Ho's vision of a 2d Waikiki never panned out, but he still made money subdividing the plantation and building a Golf course/condominium. Digging in a late 19th century machine shop dump I also found some granite flagstones and some cut limestone. Some bricks from Glasgow were dated 1878. German and American capital built the plantation.

Awesome. I couldn't not find a way up towers hill to find this area. I could only find the contaminated things end. How do you get to the mill?
@NQExplorers

Thanks for the comment Anna - the lower area of the mill ruins are accessible from a walking track off Rainbow Road (Brown Street). The upper area can be accessed from the Towers Hill lookout. Happy Fossicking! Warren.

i wonder was the brick hopper lined with wood as the brick is soft it would break up
@NQExplorers
@NQExplorers 11 aylar önce
Thanks for your comment Paul, great bit of insight, you are absolutely right the brick hopper would not have stood constant ore being dumped, probably had a 'disposable' wooden liner for sure. Happy Fossicking mate! Warren.

Warrn how mamy aviation accidents happened before the 1942 demolitions were carried out? cMerry Christmas to you and Coleen and the family. Hugh
@NQExplorers
@NQExplorers 11 aylar önce
G'day Hugh, I can't find any evidence of aircraft accidents caused by the chimney, but given that it had been abandoned for 40 years when demolished, it certainly wasn't worth the lives of a B-24 crew, so down it came! All the best mate, Merry Christmas to you and your family. Warren and Colleen.

There was no airstrip there before 1942. It was built at the request of the USAAF and the 3rd Bomb Group was based there until early 1943 when they moved up to New Guinea.

Much of what you're showing here is evident in my home town Kadina, SA and Wallaroo where copper was mined in 1850 - 1890. The best chimney stack in Australia is located at Wallaroo where a smelter was built, square instead of round.
