I’m telling you, having that 4-8 month payroll is worth everything in gold! I lost my job and had started searching for new ones that fit my needs. Took about 2 months. My payroll fund had me covered no problem. Not having to worry AT ALL about how you’ll pay your bills is a god send and I recommend EVERYONE do this as well. Looking for a new job almost felt like a short vacation haha I was able to take my time finding the right job for me rather than taking what was available to start paying the bills. Thank you for sharing this information, a lot of people could use it myself included.

@Ivan Jaman I read a book that says to take about 10% of your gross pay check and put into a saving acct. Online bank is fine... buy taking that .only every payday and saving it is the key. Any and all over time...in bank. If you done your bills on a 4 pay check month every few months you get a 5th paycheck. The whole thing go in bank. I hope that helps. It the only thing that has really changed my life. Paying myself first. Saving money and investing it in stocks CD ladders and bonds . I just open a fidelity acct. Roth ira and ira are funded also a money market saving acct. With a money management plan.. if what on my table. Good luck

Probably biggest takeaway from this video: 16:30 you have to run yourself like a business. I think once people understand that they are their own life manager they might consider not spending their money on the newest iPhone every single year.

Dhukino it happened to me as well - I’m European so the social security is not an issue and neither is debt, especially student loans...your taxes will take care of you. However this is also the reason why there very little Euro financial advice Videos so I started to watch the US ones and quickly realized: Every €uro I spend now on stupid stuff today is 5€ lost 10 years from now.

I love these tips. I used the snowball method to pay off my car, personal loan, and iPhone this year! Each small thing I paid off, I put that exact amount into the next smallest debt payment. I only have my credit card and student loans left and I’ve built up my savings account slowly this year too. I love the advice about having the emergency fund in a checking account. Thanks Nate!

Yet they teach Algebra 3 and 4. What a joke, smh. I’m teaching my kids all about finances myself. One is all about watching and learning from Nate here. Both are failing the bs Math that the school is teaching however, and it’s absolutely useless and is NEVER used in real life unless maybe you are an engineer or physicist or something like that. Such a stupid waste of time. Let’s keep them stupid and in student loan debt, slaves on a hamster wheel.

One thing he didn't mention with the debt snowball is to, once you've eliminated that first debt, roll that payment amount over onto the next largest balance. Basically, pay as much as you can toward the smallest balance. Once that first balance is gone, you have that left over cash flow you can apply to the next highest balance.

I consider myself very lucky to have had parents who instilled in me the value of saving at a very early stage. I grew up watching them save while still being able to live comfortably. I have to say that I have hard working parents too. Next time you could mention about tax free savings account too. I don't know how it works in the USA but here in Canada we have a TFSA. Unfortunately mine is maxed out so I will be obliged to open a regular high interest savings account too. And any interests earned in this account will be taxed by the government. So food for thought depending on the type of account you have, don't think that the interests earned are all yours and that you can use them whenever you want.

Watching this during lock down and let me say that I am so happy to see this affirmation of what I've practiced for 3 years. Today I am living off that annual salary savings/emergency fund since I can't qualify for that generous unemployment package by the government; and still I am at step #7 researching and determined to invest up to $1000 in the stock market before my savings is drained completely. You see I had saved and executed my plan to leave my job with my idiot dirt bag of a boss before COVID19. And while on my way to secure my new position, the unimaginable happened and no unemployment for me since I was not directly affected. Certainly not the way that I intended to spend my sacrifice and savings; but just saying that the frugality and practical suggestions from this young man is for real even on a middle income salary like I had or even if it takes longer than 3 years b/c of the added responsibility of children. I just think of how much more money I could have had if I did not take cabs a couple of times a week to that abusive, crappy job. Nonetheless, my not earning in any income right now is not going to stop my small investment to possibility of gaining income at the end of this economic slow down. Come this far just have to take a chance with what you can afford to loose or be without for a little while.

if you don't want to keep up with it on a daily basis you probably want to look at some long term investments with slow but stable companies, companies that have a good track record and to a certain extent "too big to fail". you might see a few dips in their stocks but in the long run, go up or example AT&T, Coca Cola, and Google

Malishma Loi

Not really. I will say its better if every parent can teach these things with their children. Im grateful because I have learned budgeting from my parents and I also keep learning from different successful people and my own experience. Also, we need to think logically before we spend money..I always ask myself when I see something in the store..is it something that I need or is it something I just want?. Don't get me wrong though, rewarding ourselves sometimes is fine as long as we can afford it and something that we can really use very often. It's called BALANCED LIFESTYLE. When we learned how to balance things, life will be alright! 🙂

I love all of your content, I have been binge-watching your channel since I discovered it 2 days ago. However, I find some of these steps to be a bit unrealistic for people who are living just above poverty level. It would take me 2 years to save up 6 months of income and still keep my current expenses paid! I live VERY frugally already, I don't spend money on anything but bills and groceries. What advice would you give to someone who is just barely getting by?

Hi Emily. Biggest tip: start shifting your focus on ways to increase income. I have lots of videos on how to make extra money. Budgeting and saving is important, but it sounds like you’d benefit the most from making an extra $500 a month. Good luck, wish I had more time to explain in this comment. - Nate

In regards to steps 2 (checking accounts) and 5 (debt payoff) it helps to have a 2nd checking account only for (automatic) debt payments, which is funded automatically from your first checking account, and when a debt is paid off the automatic transfer stays the same and you just roll that "extra" money into the next debt until you are debt free, and this requires a lot less self-discipline. Once debt free, turn this 2nd account into step 6 (4-8 months of savings). For more info check out the book Barefoot investor by an Australian guy.

Important points for the debt repayment: You pay the minimum balance on all debts but extra money goes toward paying off the lowest balance or highest interest rate. Once that's paid off, you apply the amount you had been paying for that targeted debt to the next targeted debt. That's how things snowball/avalanche; as debts get paid off, the other debts can be paid off in larger amounts so things build up over time.

I found that my spending mindset changed when most of my money was in my checking account vs my savings account. When most was in ckg, I was more comfortable spending more on things or impulse buying because I knew I had the money. My solution, (assuming you spend less than you earn) total my month bills. Have that amount in my ckg account + a few hundred +account minimum balance (for monthly variance in bill amounts and a bit of peace of mind) All the rest send to savings Result: I don’t spend as much randomly on little things because I know I don’t have “extra money” in my ckg account

Reasons to opt out of 401k retirement plans provided by employers: a response to having never experienced job security; being let go before becoming vested in the employer match; being let go creates an unforeseen emergency (or you just refuse to think it's your turn)

Problem is spending more than you earn due to credit cards/loans. Paying interest on those credit cards and loans eat away at your income. Not budgeting and having a plan. When you get paid, should put away 20% into savings. Rest should go towards debt repayment, bills, grocery. Dont be tempted by points or cash back rewards from credit cards as it leads to over spending. Plan Plan Plan, keep track of every dollar from income, understand your monthly income versus your monthly expenses. Get s 2nd and/or 3rd job, you can rest when you retire.

QUESTION: if it is recommended to have 4-8 months of income(net) in savings, how much money should you have in an emergency fund in months? The reason I ask is because $2500.00 is a lot to some and not to others. One you put out a specific dollar amount and the other you put an amount in months worth of income. Thank you.

I watched this a year ago and took your advice. I'm down to one credit card balance that I'll pay off this month, I have an emergency fund, two Roth IRAs, have started investing my money and have a cushion in place for emergencies. I used the snowball method for credit cards, which was the only debt I had back then. Something that helped with paying off credit cards and boosted my credit score was making a second payment each month. I get paid on the 15 and the last day of the month so it worked out well. I also used the same leveling up strategy I use in some video games. If I was $X.XX away from an even number moving toward a lower balance, I'd find a way to pay that amount. I looked back over a year's statements and found instances of making payments sometimes of really small amounts. But seeing the hundreds number drop or even getting the balance due down into the next lower thousands really boosted my confidence in getting things paid off.

Lisa J......he is giving you the best advice to follow. May I add: 1. always live within your means 2. even IF you can only save $5.00, start with that & never touch it. If you do ever need your savings, figure out another way of taking care of the need/emergency! 3. never, never use credit....NEVER!!! 4. NEED things you spend your money on!! the best to you & so glad you can HEAR what he is trying to tell you!

@Maria Inês Pereira so just giving my opinion here. Emergency Fund - Money that cannot and will not be touched for anything outside of a necessity no longer functioning as needed. I.e. a car breaks down or something else important breaks. Payroll - at 3 to 6 but preferably 4 to 8 months worth of expenses set aside (once again untouched) in the event of a lack of income or a significant decrease that prevents you from maintaining your current lifestyle, allowing you to sustain and keep yourself afloat until you return to the income level you once had or even greater. The money in the emergency fund is there for a quick fix while the "payroll" is there for a solid foundation. As someone is a consultant, I never take anyone's money and invest it until I know they have a minimum of 3-6 months in an account because you need to have stability and safety when dealing with a market that changes daily. Also, having 2 clients who recently lost their job, having the 6 months of expenses covered them until they secured employment. There are other things I would suggest, but everyone's situation is different and needs an in depth look from a professional which just can't be given through a TRshow video or in a comments section.

@Maria Inês Pereira If you’re asking me, I personally think it’s important to have both because they’re used for two different types of emergencies. God forbid you have a sudden medical emergency that’s not completely covered by your insurance, and find yourself temporarily out of work while you recover. If you had an emergency fund, it could be used to help cover your medical expense, without depleting the money you’d need to support yourself while you’re out of work. That’s just one scenario, but this idea of needing to use two different funds back to back can occur. That’s why I personally think it’s a good idea to have two separate funds. Hope that helps Maria! 😊

Hi, everytime I hear about emergency funds, people talk about saving around 6 months worth of your expenses, which is basically the "payroll" savings you're talking about. Why do you think it's necessary to have both? Thanks :)

I think the key is to live below your means, spend less than you make. The problem comes when you don't make enough to cover your basic expenses. If you're working at a minimum wage job it's going to be harder to get ahead. Invest in yourself so you increase your earning potential.

Especially since majority of people are stuck at home nowadays, so its a great time to double down on your focus while most people just lope around and watch Netflix.. use this time to build your empire!!! 💪🔥🤑

This is great information. In most cases 'healthcare' is also a 'pre-tax' expense that is taken out of your paycheck, as well as an HSA; this actually lowers you taxable income impact. Also, why would I save up 4-8 months of payroll when I have already saved 4-8 months of Emergency Funds? Seems redundant. Nevertheless, I agree that this is critical information that needs to be taught in school.
