Jimmy responds to the tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and talks about 89% of Americans wanting background checks, our cowardly leaders listening to the NRA instead of the people they actually represent, firearms becoming the #1 leading cause of death for American children and teens, Ted Cruz speaking at an NRA event this weekend, the 27 school shootings so far this year in America, and making sure that lawmakers do something about common-sense gun laws. If you can, please support Everytown in their fight against gun violence. www.everytown.org/

As an educator my heart is with the kids, whose dreams are cut short, what happened is really heartbreaking.

The OP is an educator and this is heartbreaking. I don’t get the responses. Literally every developed nation on the planet does not have school shootings. Why on Earth can’t 🇺🇸 learn from all the countries that don’t have school shootings.

i was heartbroken when a child called 911 several times and was being told police were there but not being rescued right away. I can’t imagine calling for help and not getting it right away! So terrifying so enraging! They shouldn’t have waited so long and it breaks my heart for all the teachers and little kids who lost their life. Now the survivors will have this memory forever. So heartbreaking. Hearing a little kid describe an adult situation is so sad. They don’t know that the Gunman was evil. You know? Their so innocent. I wish these kids nothing but true happiness who survived. It’s not fair that they witnessed true evil.

I'm a 911 dispatcher and a teacher's assistant, and it makes me so sad to know this happened and the police response. I give my best at both jobs and this is something always in my mind. I'm always careful of locking doors, making sure our kids are always supervised, hiding spots are cleared, no strangers, and I always listen to people who call for help. I would immediately send for help all our resources. But it's just crazy that it didn't seem like they did their best honestly. We even have maps of our schools and resources. Rip to those angels but I really hope things change.

I'm a teacher in Austria and because of news like this, some kids (not many, just a few) have asked me whether we were going to have panic buttons or active shooter drills and the idea absolutely terrifies me. I always tell them that it would be one of the saddest days if we ever needed those things at our schools...

@bees ahh bees Hold tight, I'm about to rain some truth. I don't want this to seem like I don't care about kids being shot, as it's a real problem. On average 75 kids are shot to death in schools in the US, 90% are NOT from mass shooters. However, we have 50 million students. To compare that number to other things, 20 kids each year are killed by school lunches. 130 are killed by school sports. 396 are killed by their parents' backyard pool. Our fear is shaped by what can be hyped by the media.

As a mom of 2, one in college and the other in elementary school I have extreme anxiety whenever my kids step foot outside our home. As a child of immigrant parents, I remember growing up and hearing my parents rave about how great this country is, but now America is one of the scariest places to live in the world. This is insane how politicians can stand idly by while our children get massacred over & over again. It makes me sick thinking about the parents of those children whose hearts were ripped out and forever changed 💔

It’s good to see that so many Americans are finally starting to see what those of us outside the country have seen. It’s just very saddening to know that it will probably lead to nothing, like always. It’s like Jimmy said, people move on with their lives and the Republicans and NRA are able to get back to business as usual.

I pray that the families that lost those babies and for the wonderful teachers that bravley risked their lives for those babies, I pray your soul is at peace, and I pray that God touches the hands to those families. You know as a Canadian, it’s like watching a dysfunctional family living next door. Schools should not need armed guards. Stats show legislation works. I have no words for what is happening in America. This is political and anyone who says it’s not is in denial. Your children should live past school age. I'm a foreign language teacher in Japan. I'm originally from Canada. My elementary school kids asked me about gun laws in Canada and asked if I was afraid of school shootings. They don't understand it at all, and neither do I. I never feared for my life in school in Canada. I feared my bullies, sure, but I never expected someone to walk in with a gun. And my kiddos here in Japan can't fathom it. I doubt any of them have ever seen an actual gun, as they are basically impossible (thank god) to acquire here. I live in the city with the largest Yakuza clan in all Japan. Yet there is no gun crime to speak of, and my kids are not afraid of shooters. We do earthquake and typhoon drills on the regular, though - and that's all drills should ever be.
Nariasan 2 aylar önce
@201hastings No clue where you were living, but it's a non-issue. You want human trafficking, head to Russia. The Yakuza here in Japan do all their human trafficking abroad anyway, so your point is moot.

You don't even begin to imagine how shocking this is for the rest of the world. Choosing guns over people. It's so difficult to understand for free countries where people don't own guns, where sometimes not even the police carry guns. The fact that this is still being discussed instead of addressed is simply horrifing to us.
Maribel Gerstner
Maribel Gerstner 2 aylar önce
@Joe Nicholas it's not about banning guns because that would go against the very fiber of what makes a democracy. It's about responsibility. It's about taking the time and using the resources to make as sure as you possibly can that who you're giving a gun to is mentally stable to know to use that gun responsibly. The legal drinking age is 21 but you can purchase a gun legally at 18. Is this logical or is this financially convenient for someone? Another thing if people need to own guns to protect themselves then there must be other issues to address as well. Such as, are the agencies responsible for protecting our citizens doing their job well? Are they well-equipped and trained to fulfill those responsibilities? Do they need to be more adequately staffed? You're right it's not about banning guns it's much more complex than that. The question is do they care enough to do anything about it?

@Debra Meyer: Dear Deb: I sympathize regarding the state's standardized stick, but this is all that the legislators have, to measure and gauge the student's progress. Academia is akin to a factory where the focus is on getting the job done. ----------------------- Artistic, emotional, philosophical, and even *spiritual* aspects are subjective and difficult to measure. A student shedding the most tears for Ukraine or staying the course of celibacy may be a boon for society but may not move the needle for his education. A student possessing spiritual truths and doctrine that would wipe the teacher wouldn't be preaching or philosophizing in the wrong settings. His objective is to listen, show attentiveness and absorb the *teacher's materials* to ace the given tests.
Debra Meyer
Debra Meyer 2 aylar önce
@eddyvideostar On the contrary, sir. The feeling, meaning and philosophizing ARE truly the cherished results of the foundations laid by the critical thinking skills taught through the methods you deride. Some never get that far, but I have seen a lot of amazing outcomes even in pre-high school students. As for spewing tests, you will need to speak to state legislators about that standardized stick they use to beat educators with.

@a To A: This depends on the location and climate of interpretation. The two other greatest words are: *STOP and FRISK.* This would assure the significant reduction of fire-arm carries in gun-banned states. However, the spin, twist, and the modern-day "climate-equalizing;" would quell the politicians' cow-towing heads into constructing anything concrete.

@Jo BS.. He has children.. One son who was very sick and close to death.. Jimmy didn't do this speech in front of his live audience, and honestly feels the pain. So tired of people forgetting about the victims here.. No ones talking about the children who were slaughtered... Some people actually give a f&&K about children and some people obviously care more about their damned assault weapons...

Well said Mr. Kimmel...you spoke truth to power. You said what most of us believe and want changed about gun control.

I hear the same speech again and again. It's so devastating that the higher ups refuse to believe in common sense. Rest in peace angels.

I sobbed watching this . As a mother, I can’t imagine the pain these parents are forced to endure.

@fabio buzzo it's a comedy show... I'm glad Jimmy did his thing but I'm trying to laugh despite the tragedy ... If you want something serious go to BBC or something

When late night hosts in this country represent us better than those who are actually suppose to represent us, we are f*cked. This was heart wrenching to watch, Jimmy. Thank you for saying what so many of us are feeling.
