It’s crazy at how the older generations in the church differentiate from the younger generation and how policies have changed as well.

My mom left the mormon church 20 years ago. We are still constantly harrassed by the church. They make it near impossible to leave, but my mom tracked down and jumped through all of their hoops. Two decades later and they still come to our house (more than just missionaries) and send us letters and call her buisness number and have her on their records as an "inactive member" even though she filed to be removed as such. It's really horrible to see my mom constantly hounded by this traumatic part of her life. I think she should sue the church, but she's too nice for that.

@Perhaps any work they put you on is your choice. They ask you first. Also, you don’t get on missionary work unless you ask them.

yeah I'm biding my time til I move out and I was put on the missionary work part for my church where we talk about who in the community we should reach out to to convert. Fuck. No. I sit and zone out and refuse to participate even if I know people. Wouldnt want to wish their shit on anyone

@A Drop Of Colour Some people are kinda crazy about religion, and they usually tend to stick together. I'm LDS, people have left the church from our ward, and basically, nothing has changed. My grandma's ward on the other hand... One teen left (19) and he was kicked out, shunned, and basically hated by everyone other than my grandma and her friends.

I’m an ex-Mormon and my main issue with the church is how they say that we have to aspire to be like Jesus and “love thy neighbour” but they are some of the most judgemental people that if you do something that “breaks the rules”. A lot of my issues include being anti lgbtq+, if you have sex before marriage you’re a sinner. They make you feel bad for doing things like drinking tea and coffee. I felt like they wanted me to be this perfect person and I’m not perfect and I’m not what they want me to be.
Mason England
Mason England 9 gün önce
Yeah for me it’s always been a problem with the people who fallow the belief and not the belief itself. In my time in the church I was taught to NOT be judgmental and do love anyone for whatever they do, the belief was virtuous but the problem came when the very same person who taught me that would also be very judgmental about people who did drugs or drank alcohol. Still, the whole point is that we should strive to be perfect, not that we have to be perfect, but that we should do our best. Doesn’t change that people blatantly go against their own teachings, but that’s human error, not the teachings

thats just how you felt. Not what they actually teach though. There are rules in life and God has commandments and if you feel like God is tyring to force u to be perfect that is ultimately your problem. Has nothing to do with the invalidity of the LDS church. Even Christianity has commandments from God that we all must follow.

Being Mormon seemed so right until my son killed himself. I just wanted to belong to a loving group. I did''t realize how the teachings made us feel much more guilty and fearful than loved. Judged for being unworthy caused my boy to rationalize that death was the only answer

@fluffynyasquirrel dude, people can hide there feelings increadibly well. They could have been the most loving and caring parent and they still couldn't see that his son was silently suffering. Sometimes people die and no matter how much you care, it happends. Also, dont call somebody evil when you dont know them. They could be in alot of pain because of what they experience and you just going "yeah you should go to hell for what you did", I know its not what you say but it sounds like that and its rude. Ps. I grew up Mormon and when I was like 14 I felt like I just didn’t belong, thank god a lot of the people at my church that I was around were amazing people. A younger boy made a joke about gay people and I’ve questioned my sexuality my entire life..it really hurt me, but then his own mother stopped the entire class, sat in front, and gave an entire lecture about how it doesn’t matter who you like, saying how everyone is a child of god and deserves to be respected and loved..She didn’t know, but I really needed to hear that. I haven’t really gone since, but that’s one of the really good memories I took from church

@Mele Pearl Not just churches, but religion in general is blamed for many problems, even if in reality it's people that cause them. I mean seriously, why would god, the creator of all existence, ask for money so that he can forgive you? There's a reason the protestant reformation happened.
Mele Pearl
Mele Pearl 3 aylar önce
@Alexander V. Domanski it was the other kid’s mother that said this by the way. But it is a commandment that our church teaches, to love everyone and treat everyone with love and respect because we are all children of God. Unfortunately people still have their own personal beliefs that the church isn’t responsible for, but still get blamed for.

I watched this for the first time as a member and was like, “okay, that wasn’t too offensive.” Now that I’ve left the church, I feel like it wasn’t as in-depth as it could’ve been. There’s so much toxicity in the church. I decided to leave and lost my husband, my parents, and my brother. They now all look down on me and don’t want to associate with me at all. I lost all my “friends” that were in the church. If you’re not a member or don’t fit in, you’re other. You’re not to be spoken to. They also didn’t touch on the very patriarchal views. How women are expected to have many children. How men get special powers known as the priesthood. They have the ability to heal the sick, help spirits move to the afterlife, and give blessings. Even tell you what your future life will be (if you stay worthy in the church).
A Drop Of Colour
A Drop Of Colour 24 gün önce
Ok that isn’t true. We dont look down on non members. I’ve met hundreds of other Mormons and non of them are like that. You can be whatever you want and they will still respect you. Women don’t have to have children and I’ve never met a family who has more than four children. None of these things are true.

+++ yeah imo it was flawed that they only interviewed 2 gay ex members, bc it makes it seem that LDS would be fine, if only they were not gay. As if the only flaw was not being accepting, while ignoring the problematic dogma and control it inflicts on people...technically you could interview lgbt ex-members of ANY religion, bc almost all religions have some stance against it. Therefore, it's not speaking to what specifically makes mormonism problematic.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience but i wanted to say that there are definitely still good people in this religion who care and love those outside of the church. My grandma aunts and a uncles left the church and we still remain close to them with out trying to convert them. I have friends and even dated some one who was not a member. The are still just as much my friends as those who are members and I do not view them any differently

To understand any full picture, you need to see both sides of the story. I wasn't able to find anything from the Mormon side of things. You interview a lot of really interesting people, it would be... interesting/educational/odd/insert other term here/etc to see if you can find out from them (in this case the Mormon's) why they see things in their own words.

So I am a recent returned Missionary for the church, and out of all places I served, I went to Provo Utah. Utah is the heart of our church and when I tell you that while I witnessed so much polarity there in terms of deeming what a “good Mormon should be”, I really did. I think a majority of the toxicity of our church is our cultures fixation on being perfect, and it’s in our older generation that is what is instilling that within us. I’ve seen and talked with people inside and out of our church about their horror stories and it really brought to light truly disgusting we are being in the name of being like Christ. I realized on my mission that people feel and get closer to God outside of the church, and that all religions have some truth to them. I am still an active member of the church, I love and believe in the basics of our gospel (faith, repentance (when we truly have done something wrong), baptism, etc), but I hope to see a day where we don’t have to be extreme in efforts to stop people from leaving or judgment of others inside and outside of our church.
Applesas 2 aylar önce
Exactly this. I grew up in Utah and grew up without any religious influence from my family. I have a friend who's gone to church less, but with some personal relationships they've been struggling because people judge faith based on church attendance and tithing. I've also had my worst experiences with and met the most hateful people that have ever entered my life when they claimed to be the best mormons. I have felt most excluded by them and it's incredibly unfortunate. The pressure also seems to push people away from having faith in the LDS church rather than become a part of. At least from what I've seen growing up in Utah. There is a lot of serious judgement to the point I heard a girl name call another for wearing a dress past her knees because it wasn't past her calf instead. I'm glad that you've found a way to feel close to God and purhaps help others that want to have or keep their faith without passing judgement. It's good to have people like you who are understanding rather than judging. A return missionary I met last year told me directly that he went on his mission with the intent and enjoyment of making others uncomfortable. Your comment was a breath of fresh air for me today. Thank you.

If any of you are feeling hopeless, just know that in the middle of the Mormon Capital there is a generation of kids in high school who are deciding they want to leave, who are deciding they are okay if their friends leave, and are deciding that this religion will not dictate their lives if they decide to stay. I came out to my best friends. A month or so later, they brought up the topic of religion first, they wanted my opinion and just wanted to talk about it. When I told them I would probably leave at 18, they said they knew I would and were supportive. They said that religion is an individual decision and they would probably only stay if they married someone who was a strong Mormon. I came out to my other friend group (I came out to them first, actually), and they’re all gay too, and we have thousands of words in texts discussing sexuality, religion, social issues, neurodivergency, and death. Almost none of them are staying in the church, some have already left. I don’t think the indoctrination is working on this generation. The people who are unhappy in this religion are choosing to leave early. It’s okay.

American Christianity in general is Super messed up and is very Egotistical. I grew up in one of the strictest sect called Pentecoastlism also Evangelicalism and Protestant. 46% of America has left Christianity (However that's a Low number considering how Religious America is). The Problem with American Christianity is that they play too much on Psuedo-History rather than Studying Proto-Christianity like the Orthodox Church (Specifically Bulgarian and Armenian) I'm not Christian but I think Eastern Orthodox Christians make more sense and they are not egotistical at all.

I'm an ex Mormon. There is just no way to explain to someone who has not lived their life in a cult (Mormonsim checks off the BITE model list) like this how incredibly difficult it is to get out and completely shift your thinking and way of living. This religion is a complete culture and way of life, not just church on Sunday. It's so so hard. And these people are incredibly brave to talk about it in public. There ARE good Mormons like this gentleman said and it's tough to love so many people who you know are good but have such backwards beliefs. Cultural indoctrination is so real and we need to be more understanding of that because it happens in so many ways to so many people and you often don't understand that when it's happening to you. Especially when you grown up in a cultural bubble. I have a LOT more empathy for humans because of what I had to go through turning my life and ideas around after I left the church.

I grew up around Mormons, my whole life I had Mormon best friends. I went to the church a few times, went to Mormon camps ECT. They were very attentive and nice and I was chill with them. I think the people I met were super nice. But I never joined Mormonism because it always felt a bit off to me. This is a completely personal thing, no organized religion has ever felt completely right to me. I am agnostic, I do have some faith for a higher power but I do not vibe with organized religion. Anyways all of my Mormon friends that went to Utah for college came out as NB and started swearing so idk what's going on over there lmao.

Hi Anthony. You mentioned in the beginning of the video the growth rate of the church and it’s predominance worldwide. Following that logic, I would like to see you spending a day with recent Mormon converts and look into why they joined the church, not only why people left it. Especially because the number of joining members exceeds those of leaving members.

I just barely left the church. I was a mormon for almost 31 years, my entire life. It was difficult to leave because that's everything I had ever known and I tried to be a good mormon coma I had a strong testimony I loved my heavenly father and the savior Jesus Christ but I always felt like I didn't belong there because I was never willing to conform. I accept members of the LGBT community. I accept them as God's children and I love them and they are humans like you and me. I watch South Park I vape and a bunch of other stuff that the mormon church goes against. They were not able to see my testimony and my value is a daughter of god I've got if I was not striving to be perfect. I don't want to be perfect and I don't want to pretend to be perfect. I want to be me

to: @Samuel Dries re: the fall & the flood quote " "Eve was fulfilling the foreseen, purposes of God by the part she took in the great drama of the fall; yet she did not partake of the forbidden fruit with that object in view, but with the intent to act contrary to the divine command, being deceived by the sophistries of Satan, who also, for that matter, furthered the purposes of the Creator by tempting Eve; yet his (Satan's) design was to thwart the Lord's plan. We are definitely told that ‘he knew not the mind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world’ [Moses 4:6]. Yet his diabolical effort, far from being the initiatory step toward destruction, contributed to the plan of man’s eternal progression. Adam’s part in the great event was essentially different from that of his wife; he was not deceived; on the contrary he deliberately decided to do as Eve desired, that he might carry out the purposes of his Maker with respect to the race of men, whose first patriarch he was ordained to be.” (Articles of Faith, pp. 69-70.)" end quote. . YOU ASK would you mind answering this for me ABEL no problem I'll do my best. . YOU SAID God gave Adam and Eva a choice to eat the fruit ABEL God gave a warning to Adam and Eve. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. . YOU SAID then why when people were uses the free will would he ~ flood the world and ~ kill them all ABEL So, you are asking: If God gave mankind free-will and If mankind has free-will and If mankind uses that free-will then, Why would God flood & kill? . YOU ASKED How is that free will and giving us the choice to do what we want ABEL You have free-will. You have free-will to choose. The choice is simple. good or bad right or wrong righteousness or evil Follow the Savior or follow Satan There are consequences to your choices. Follow Satan to damnation. Follow the Savior to good times. You cannot expect God to bless you when you do the things he asks you not to do. You cannot blame the Lord for the fact that when you choose to do what you want to do, that it leads you to the fact that ~ You reap what you sow. That's why I have often wondered and I find it difficult to understand why so many people through the years have all agreed that the Latter-day Saints are good people, good neighbors, and have great families, but at the same time, simultaneously point their fingers at the Saints and think it is a derogatory term and think it is a put-down to call the members of the Church who obey the commandments ~ goody-goody, straight-laced, goody two-shoes. . to@camille ballard re: … The Church of J E S U S C H R I S T of Latter-day-Saints . I am an adult convert to the Church. . YOU SAID the controlling aspect of the religion. ABEL What controlling ! ... do you mean the commandments? What controlling ! ... do you mean brainwashing? The Church does not brainwash anyone ~ The Church teaches we all have a choice. What controlling ! ... do you mean the Church is a cult? , Re: The Cult of Families First . “Anti-Latter-day Saint critics repeatedly refer to the Church as a cult; and yet, favorably proportionate to other churches, individual cases show people who have freely and knowingly joined the Church and just as freely chosen to leave--hardly the mark of a cult” source: The Anti-Defamation League . If the Church were a cult, then it would be The Cult of Families First. An oft quoted saying in the Church is: No success compensates for failure in the home. The Church teaches us how to be better husbands and wives, sons and daughters, and friends, neighbor, and citizens of our native lands as well as children of our Heavenly Father. . YOU SAID I left because of the sexism. ABEL What do you mean sexism? do you mean they have bathrooms for boys and girls? do you mean that they believe that sex outside the bonds of marriage is a sin? . Do you meant that if the Church teaches something that you disagree with that you no longer believe in God. If that were true, then God could only ask you to do what you believe is right. And, If that were true then the only commandments that God could give were the ones that you approved of. If that were true, then you would be God ~ but you are not God are you? . This isn’t nearly as bad, but I used to go to Catholic school and when I came out as bi, everybody except one person almost completely stopped talking to me. After I stopped going to the school and went to visit that one person, when I was on my way out to go home the principal was like “so (my name) I heard you were bisexual”...

I'm lucky that my ward/branch is very diverse and accepting. We have people from all walks of life and therefore people aren't super judgy luckily. We are kind of in the hood and we have a lot of people in recovery from addiction, people who are more well off, people who are poor and such a diverse ethnic makeup. I love it! I remember one thing that made me feel comfortable is one of the head people had a daughter who was lesbian and getting married and the whole family went to the wedding still and never shunned her or anything. They didn't necessarily agree with it, but they love her and her wife. I am not the straightest human ever and some kids have come out to me and ask if they are going to hell and I always assure them all love is pure and God loves ALL people. ❤️

I’m from Utah where over half the population is Mormon, but I myself am not religious. The pressure to convert to LDS is pretty strong… my entire dad’s side of the is Mormon, most of my friends are Mormon… So interesting and sad to hear the struggles felt by those that had to leave to church and feel all the exclusiveness that comes with it. I send my love to you all ❤️

I grew up in Utah with a family that never taught me any religion unless for cultural awareness. The pressure really is high to convert and it comes to a point that people have tried to convert me since I was a kid that now I just can't care. I did have someone very rudely try to convert me in my own apartment last year (the person who invited him in wasn't even there) even after I asked him to leave me alone several times.

When i was 11, I zoned out in church and mistook the term LDS for LBGT. The guy who said it gave me a death stare and I was shunned and gossiped about for the rest of the day. Even beforehand, I would feel such pressing anxiety from being forced to commit to the female gender roles that i would bite my arms until they bled.

Several of my friends I found out to be Mormon only after I got to know them really well. Just like only my closest friends find out I'm a closet vegan. They've always appeared to be completely normal and functional in regular society. I never felt judged for things I may have said to them or done around them when I was not aware of who I was in the presence of. Religion never even came up once until we were invited to these "fun" nights. Where the kids would get together and make crafts, pinewood derby races, hair styling classes. They seem happy. Very loving and understanding with their children who are obviously growing up in a world where these old values do not apply. And I don't see how they're hurting anyone. They've certainly never hurt me. So I keep them as friends. I wouldn't want to shut anyone out the way they might be shut out of their society.

"Mormons... Are a religious group who practice Mormonism" This is big brain time
Moody Bagels
Moody Bagels Yıl önce
@V.K. Storytellers Uh. No that's not at all what a cult is. It's actually quite the opposite. Religious cults, for exemple, start as... Well, a religion. For example, the members of Heaven's Gate saw their beliefs as a religion way before Ti (aka Bonnie Lu Nettles) died, and Do (aka Marshall Herff Applewhite) died with the others, during the mass suicide. Here's the definition of a (religious) cult: "An unorthodox sect whose members distort the original doctrines of the religion" (Merriam-Webster) Now, this is why I said you should watch TellTale's videos on the subject. At its core, a cult is a toxic/abusive relationship between a leader and their followers. Whether a group is a cult may be determined by using the BITE model, which stands for behavior control, information control, thought control, and emotional control. The mormon church scores pretty high on that model. You mentioned you realized you were being mislead by the mormon church even in childhood, which seems like it might align with information control. I'm not saying you should hate mormons or stop asking them for help when you need it, but I think some research needs to be done on your part, because Mormonism is definitely a cult, and they can cause a lot of damage to their followers (and even to some outsiders)
V.K. Storytellers
V.K. Storytellers Yıl önce
@Moody Bagels All religions start as a cult. The word cult just means separate culture from the normal standard. I'd say Mormons are far from the normal standard of society. They are just established and socially accepted now, therefore a religion. How does a religion form? When the cult leader dies but his teachings go on. Being a cult isn't a bad thing. Most things, even non-religious activities, start as a deviation of the normal standard. What makes a cult bad is when it damages the norm rather than building onto it and enhancing it.
Moody Bagels
Moody Bagels Yıl önce
@V.K. Storytellers Just because they're kind and giving doesn't mean they're not a cult. It's a facade. Just take a moment to watch TellTale's or Jimmy Snow's videos on the subject.

V.K. Storytellers
V.K. Storytellers Yıl önce
@Moody Bagels Yeah, I did grow up as Mormon, but that doesn't mean I listened to them. You think I didn't see through the BS, even at a young age. Even in my youth, I understood when I was being mislead. They are good people, that's why I stuck with them. Doesn't mean I live by their code. I smoke weed, drink energy drinks, and do everything they don't want you to do, but they were nice and generous people and that's the only thing I adopted into my personality. Their organization skills could be commended. Every church in the world has the same lesson each week, so no matter where you are, you'll learn the same lessons that you wouldve got in your church. I won't speak ill of Mormons though, because whenever I needed help, like being down on my luck and out of food, the Mormons would always help and show up with a truck load of food. Like TONS OF FOOD that would last me for months. The church gets my respect, but it doesn't mean I believe the story they tell.

This is so interesting. I converted my first year in the military, thinking it was your average, run of the mill church. Given, it was on the base, so it's different from "normal branches". The service was very different from what I was used to. You have 2 people who spoke about a topic like a paster would, and that was just amazing to me. Like us in the conjugation meant something beyond "teachable". I apologize to those who were hurt by self-righteous people who thought it was "okay" to give someone negative energy just cause someone was different. Please live the life you wish to live, and find happiness how you wish it to be found. Don't let someone else find it for you.

When I left the mormon church officially about a year ago. The leaders of the kids told the kids not to play with my kids anymore. My neighbors also stopped talking to me. I was raised Mormon after my ex husband left me for cheating on me with my childhood friend I had a bishop tell me I shouldn’t be getting a divorce because divorce was against the Bible. I left the activity I was at and never went back. It is very judgmental and if you aren’t perfect you aren’t for them. My aunt went on a church mission and came home and came out as gay and everyone stopped talking to her I knew it wasn’t the place for me to be after that.

I’m new subscriber and my daughter sent me the link to watch your video, my story is different, I spent 40 years in the church served a mission and got married four children and accepted all the callings that I was called to serve, my reasons for resigning started when I read the CES letter from an ex- missionary, the questions he asked were fair and to the point , when I started asking some of my leaders about the same questions all they did was to ignored me and asked me not to question the church history, I asked and search everything that I could find about the church history and found some historical facts that didn’t match with I was taught in seminary classes, then it was the masonry teachings at the temple and how Joseph Smith came up with them and introduced them into the church and by doing so it became a”cult” there is nothing in the gospel of Jesús that teach about masonry and secrets oaths and signs , that was the last drop that spilled the the bucket “” I decided to leave and also my wife and children, it has been a 360 degrees change for me and my family I feel liberated and at peace with my self and my creator .

Growing up in the mormon church I can honestly say was terrible, I lived in a small town full of drug users so at least a quarter to a half of them were fucked up on something, I remember this one time a women went up in front of the whole church to do a testimony about her cat dying and she some how spun it into sexy satan appearing in front of her and them doin it, she got kicked out that day but was allowed to come back the next week, but I could go on and on about the wack shit those people did, not all of them were crazies just the majority.

As a member of the church, I was worried about this video, and the kinds of things that would be discussed (we generally get a really bad rap among ex-mormons), but I was pleasantly surprised by how uplifting it was! I am so impressed with how Anthony never tried to diminish anyone, and just builds up everyone around him. I love my religion, but I totally understand that it's not for everyone, and no shame if you have to leave or anything. I appreciate not being shamed in return for once in this kind of a video :)))))) Thank you for this video and thanks for how lovely a person you all are, including Kai and Secily! I know I am incredibly late, but... I formed an idea back in the 4th grade (Currently in Junior Year) that has convinced me that Mormonism isn't true. It was the idea that nothing is our fault, what I mean by this is you become how you were raised, your family, the place you grew up, etc... Meaning every little thing you do was because of the past. If you were to create an infinite number of realities, started the same exact way, and have the same properties of science, all of the realities would end up the same. If it happens to be that Mormonism is true and God created the world, and there will be a day where people will be judged, the judgment would be unfair, as the person who was maybe sent to hell was only this way because of the past. No one would have control over their fate which is not what the church promises. The church promises that everyone will have their own choice in the world to be on their path or a different path, but if we apply what I talked about, your opinion is not your own. It is the thousands of generations before us, which leads to the very start, meaning the only people in the world at fault were the firstborn. I am now agnostic, as I believe there is a possibility of a God or of no God. I really suck at explaining things so I hope you all can at least somewhat understand the point I'm trying to make lmao.
Catw00 4 gün önce
I forgot to add one more thing, my family has always been a part of the Mormon church, but slowly all of the people in our family have left. The only people that believe now are my parents, and one of my sisters which has autism (Talk about manipulation). Everyone though still is convinced that I believe in the church, so my parents of course force me to go to church, and attend seminary. You may ask, "Why don't you just tell them?" Well, my parents are interesting figures, they treat the rest of my family (All moved out) With little respect, as they see them as doomed, I am going to wait until I am ready for college education to tell them so I don't have to deal with crap.

Hey it's Kai again...some answers to questions I'm getting: I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Not Utah. After my church mission to Portugal, I lived in Utah for 4 years, part of that time (briefly) at BYU. I have lived in California ever since. So, no, not a Utah Mormon. I didn't leave because I'm gay. I left because I figured out that it's a false religion. In fact, I consider ALL religion to be man-made. The term Sky Daddy has been used for over a decade or two at least. It wasn't invented by Mr Atheist and in fact I had never heard of him before this video. 😎 Yes, I got my endowment... In the Los Angeles temple on Santa Monica Blvd. It was the pre-1990 one that still had the blood oaths and penalties. While in Utah I attended "ex-gay" conversion therapy. They taught us sports and how to aske girls on dates, among other things, and often told us that getting married would solve our "issue". Because I still try to help Mormons who want to leave (especially LGBTQ), i DO know the "state of the church" currently. Don't assume I don't know what's going on... I keep up. And just because you've never experienced something, doesn't mean me or Secily didn't. Also, it's not our job to distinguish between Mormon doctrine or policy or members' bad behavior. Between Secily and me, Anthony has nearly 3 hours of video, and we the interviewees don't get decide what he includes or explains. Just because you haven't had the same experience we did, that doesn't mean our stories aren't true. And finally, I have been loving all the sweet messages you've been sending me on my Instagram and here on TRshow. It warms my heart to know that you care! You are so awesome. Now of course every now and then I get a couple of non positive replies and you might see my fangs come out now and then, but for the most part you have been amazing. Mahalo and Aloha!

What a fantastic video. It’s very educational and it focuses on a lot of unspoken issues. I am an ex-Mormon myself but I still find a lot of ex-Mormon media turns into anti-Mormon and accusatory stuff. There is still a lot of good to be found in the religion but unfortunately there is also a LOT of negativity. This is educational and offers a different point of view for church members to consider. I also love that you got a male and female for the different perspectives. For both sides the pressure of what you have to do is immense. I came into this video really apprehensive but I love it.

I absolutely love this video. My mother's whole family (like 70-80 people) are all Mormon to my knowledge. Thankfully, my mother is not the best Mormon ever and she gave me freedom of religion so that's nice. I came out as gay and so afterwards I got a pamphlet in the mail about the marriage of man and woman xD. That being said, they're not evil people at all. And they're getting less strict about it as they get older. They're nice to me but also, it just sucks to see them belong to something probably because their family comes from a long line of mormonism.

I really enjoyed this video. It was very informative. It was great to hear that Mormon Mothers are taking in homeless youth. It's sad that a denomination that has the ability to evolve into a more inclusive denomination (because they have a "Prophet") can change and yet they do not. Personally, I am an athiest. I grew up in a Fundamentalist Evangelical Born-Again Bible-believing Christian household. I can fully relate to these people as their experiences are similar to Evangelical households. I will look into those Mormon Mothers as they would be a good organization to whom to donate. I enjoyed both folks interviewed yet Kai was sweet, funny and playful while sincerely driving home his point. Again both interviewees were awesome.

In one of the last meetings I had with my old bishop before leaving the church for good, I was a teenager, he asked me if I believed God is real and I said that I wasn't sure anymore. He then asked me something that made me finally realize I don't belong in the church and it was this: "If you don't believe in God, then why do you choose to do good instead of evil?" The idea that fear of a deity should be my main reason for choosing to not be an asshole is fucking insane to me and always has been.

Interesting and informative video! This made me think of how it would be to interview former Scientology members and former Armish people.

Everyone in these comments saying they're Mormons from somewhere outside of Utah and it's better either are trying to save face and throw Utah under the bus, or they're blissfully unaware. I was a Mormon who has had the Utah experience and the "mission field" experience. It was one and the same. If anything, the members outside of Utah were even more zealous because they felt they had to overcompensate for not being Utah. There is absolutely no difference in orthodoxy based on geography.

I've actually had a relatively positive experience growing up in the church, as I felt a strong sense of community and love from the people in my ward. This made it harder for me to accept that a lot of other people have much more negative experiences with the church, including many of my current friends who have since left the church. I've also had friends who stayed in the church, while also recognizing its shortcomings and still listening to those who were hurt. Idk where I fall right now, because I really do love some (keyword, some) of the doctrines that they teach, and I don't really have any gripes with the Book of Mormon. However, the church as an institution is... interesting to say the least, and it has plenty of faults that are difficult to overlook when they directly hurt the people I love. Idk, religion is a very complex issue, and there's a lot of gray area that isn't discussed widely in the church, but maybe it should be, just to provide some perspective. Idk, I'm not sure where this is going, but I just thought I'd share my thoughts lol

To see this video as a kid trying to leave the church (17 y/o currently), I find this video very inspiring. I feel as if everyone I was friends with while I still attended church were only my friends because I was part of the church. Not only that, but since I haven’t gone to church in two years, they constantly try to invite me to activities and reach out only about Mormon related things. The first few times I gave in and went, but I felt ignored and unloved there. So I just stopped responding all together. But get this, the funniest part? They contacted me through my SCHOOL EMAIL recently rather than by phone or visiting my home. Super funny lol. Can’t wait to be 18 and remove myself from their records 😮‍💨

my ex boyfriend of 2 years is a Mormon. i expressed i had no interest in joining, mind you i was 17 at the time. he proceeded to mold me into a housewife and proposed to me a year in because he wanted to start having kids. his mother told me that our children would go to hell if we weren’t married when we had kids. (yes i got out kid and marriage free)

Ex Mormon here! I was born into the church, my Father was born a Mormon and my Mother converted because my grandparents wouldn't give their blessing for the marriage unless she did. I left when I was about 22, because of one specific thing. Young Single Adults. Young Single Adults is a church group where young unmarried Mormons are expected to go to find and meet their future spouse. I was engaged at the time to a non Mormon (still with him 🖤) and that was just unacceptable. There was a missionary who really wanted me for some reason or another and would come by my house often, try to get my number, ask me to come to church events with him. He would not take No for an answer. And the problem was how no one in the church saw this as a problem. They thought he liked me, that he was interested in me and I should feel lucky that a good Mormon young man would have so much interest in me. The church members really rallied together to try and force me to get with this guy who was breaking church rules as well as borderline harassing and stalking me just because he was a church member and my partner wasn't, to the point of accusing me of sinning and turning my back on the teachings of the church. So I bailed real quick. My wellbeing is way more important than all that bs.

I just told my parents that I'm leaving the church, I was 17 and I just turned 18 so I'm still living at home, and they have almost completely blocked me out of their lives. I have heard nothing but guilt tripping and manipulation from them as an attempt to help me come back to church. Its been tough, but I'm going to move out as soon as I have the money to do so and hopefully that way I can have some peace.

i was hanging out with my best friend,(we had known each other for ~4 years) and i trusted her enough to tell her that i wanted to leave the church. she ended up completely ghosting me. it has completely destroyed my mental health and has just been so hard on me emotionally. i have such a hard time making friends for the fear that once i tell them i’m queer or i don’t like the church they’ll just leave. it’s especially hard that my parents are making me go to church till i’m 18 :(

I was Mormon and very musical, and the “funny” one. My Mormon peers and leaders absolutely loved me and I had a lot of friends. I came out privately to my family as bisexual, and no one in my church knew. That was until I went to a school dance with a girl, and after I did, I was completely isolated. No one talked to me. No one cared when I didn’t come to church. My Mormon youth group church leader who used to love me left a letter at my house that said I was going down the wrong path and that she was very concerned for me and that satan had his grip on me. I literally lost all of my church friends overnight. That showed me how fake the friendship and support is. You have to be cookie cutter Mormon, or appear to be or else you are isolated or treated differently. I now have REAL friends who won’t leave overnight because I literally slow danced with someone of the same sex.

I know this comment is a year old, so I’m not expecting much, but as a gay member of the church, I am so, so sorry you had to go through that. People suck. I want you to know that that is not what the church would have wanted. I got lucky. I acknowledge that. I came out and the people around me went and did research and found stories from other gay members of the church (Charlie Bird, Ben Schlatey, etc) and tried their best to not only understand themselves but to help others understand too. Anyone within the church who isolates or shuns or devalues you for your sexuality, or really anything for that matter, is in the wrong. I do think things are getting better and members of the church are opening their eyes more to the possibility that ‘hey lgbtq+ people are not evil actually’ (what a thought woah), but there is still a lot of work to be done. I’m so, so sorry for the wrongs that were committed against you

I find it so funny that I had to watch this video to actually find out what Mormonism is because while my parents are mormon, they never actually really took the time to teach me about the actual religious aspect of it, they only taught me about the conformity of it. Like, you cant do this, you can't be that, but they never told me what their religion was about.
Gemnox 5 aylar önce
That's definitely not a good idea. You need to have some moral foundation beyond just a set of rules.

I currently live somewhere thats inhabited with a lot of mormons. Noticing how cult-like mormonism is like, hearing from my mom about how the missionaries tried to convert her into mormonism and simply viewing from the outside as someone whos non-religious, I wonder how many of them regret being involved in mormonism.

I grew up in a somewhat Mormon family because my mom who is an immigrate didn't understand too much of the concept, but I always felt out of place because everytime I went to the church, they always sang me the welcome song cause they always thought I was new despite going to the church all the time. I also hated the fact that I HAVE to do all these things to be good in the eyes of God which never made any sense to me

Great video. Kai was especially great to listen to. Very respectful. Seems like lots of active members in the comments are thankful for the respect you each have while still having the courage to speak your mind. This is what actually helps bring people together! 🙏🏽

Oml bruh that happened to me and I live in a mormon state and in most states everyone's usually pretty accepting of lgbtq+ kids but where I live no... they get bullied relentlessly and I always hid the fact that I'm pansexual and I still do...

I got lucky, my entire family essentially left at once. It still sucks, it's scary and I still have serious religious trauma issues, but I'd rather be free than stuck as someone I'm not. 💖💛💙
