Hot flashes, joint pain, anxiety, depression, difficulty sleeping -- these unforgiving menopause symptoms directly impact work but often go overlooked and under-discussed as a taboo topic, says entrepreneur Andrea Berchowitz. She gives practical advice on how to create a menopause-friendly work culture that supports gender equity and diversity retention in the workplace.

So important inform and support women that they can gracefully deal with the symptoms of menopause. This should be required watching for all corporate leaders. This can lead to better health care and less "invisibility" of older women. Thank you.

Inequity. Gender. Racism. Climate fear mongering. This is why TED has lost millions upon millions of views. TED has become woke and wokeness is a parasite of the mind. As in the book 1984, you have to disbelieve your senses (aka reality) to believe what the woke are telling you.

So womenists found the next argument why we should give women more privileges and positive discrimination. The war on leadership continues like it did the last 50 years. Nothing new here.

Yes, but should a company suffer because I'm going through menopause? Are we asking for company to make exceptions for menopause, other physical ailments don't receive this exception. That's not equality. "don't go on a business trip because my symptoms are too bad", I understand this from the woman's point of view, but from the companies point of view, the job still needs doing. I appreciate her raising awareness, I do agree with that.

Sorry but no. Women have been accomplishing many great things for hundreds of years. Pregnancy hasn’t stopped us and menopause is nothing either. I truly believe these “symptoms” are a result of misogyny. I always had heavy periods and a degree of premenstrual discomfort. I couldn’t have identified one “symptom” of menopause. My periods waned and stopped. I didn’t lose my mind. I didn’t feel useless or debilitated in any way. The “symptomizing” of completely normal experiences is an extension of our current culture of pathologizing just about everything.

Women are different from men. Science could have told you this. Pressure is built for shoulders not hips. Anyone with a female manager knows that there are days when her anger or attitude is completely irrational. They said this same thing way back in the 60's but women chose to ignore it for the last 50+ years. You cannot just ignore science. Women call in and call out far more than men for health reasons or child care issues.
Francesca
Francesca 2 aylar önce
But let's not forget that a probably even bigger issue is that if women want to have children, they have to do so before their menopause, when most successful people are focussing on their career! Men don't have this problem, they can just work on their career until they're 40 or 50, and then when they've made it they can still have kids!

I had minimal menopause issues. I was over and done in about 18 months. There may be very few women at the top but there are a lot of women in middle management, many of them perimenopausal or menopausal, and they'd probably be more than willing to discuss it BUT if we treat it like a disability requiring accommodation, we're playing into the traditional "women can't be good employees because they're at the mercy of their bodies" excuse for denying women employment. Let's start by getting adequate healthcare for everybody and then adequate paid sick leave for everyone, so folks can take a day off if they need it without jeopardizing their jobs or their housing. But treating normal aging as disability bothers me.

@Thomas De Quincey Thomas, Much of our workforce suffers from private health/mental conditions. Men included. Some take medications that have embarrassing and uncomfortable side effects. Think your work-bud with gas, body odor, incontinence, frequent diarrhea, lethargy, etc. It does not work for 90-95% of the population. Because she’s teaching about female issues at the workplace does mean the other gender is “threatened” in some way.
Thomas De Quincey
Thomas De Quincey 2 aylar önce
I know. Even though open floor plans will probably benefit 90% - 95% of a workforce, they should definitely be scrapped in order to please the 5% - 10% of the workforce who are older, female and menopausal. All those non-menopausal female and male members of the workforce should remember - it's their fault they're not going through menopause.

We should care more about each other and be informed about certein mental and physical states, yes. But there is much more urgent inequity to deal with. I got the feeling we are talking about some kind of inequality treatment far away from real inequality. Why doesn't everyone have the same loan? Just to call something absurd: Why does an afrikan resident less likely even have the possibility to take the courses to become a CEO? Stop spending resources on the occupation question of such king-like positions and better get rid of those. Meritocracy doesn't work, so manage a company by democracy, or at least some group of wise people and stop talking about how to arrange positions...

Guess what, there is a myriad of physical/mental problems for every gender affecting their careers, why would you choose menopause for women as if men werent more affected by cardiovascular problems, stress, height/balding bias etc, are we gonna now create and whine for every category and subcategory for "not enough CEO from this category" because mother nature is taking its course? For every gender, race or whatever there is something affecting, cant make everything equal.

Lynette Hannan
Lynette Hannan 2 aylar önce
I agree with you wholeheartedly, but let's look at this realistically, because it's not going to happen very soon - it wasn't that long ago that the medical profession believed the uterus "traveled around" inside the female body causing "hysterics"; do a google search on the origin of the word "hysteric". This is still a globally male dominated society where women have to do BETTER than their male counterparts, ALONG with having the normal symptoms of womanhood at the varying stages of their lives, ALONG with rearing kids and keeping house, just to attain the SAME LEVEL as their male colleagues. Pharmaceutical companies are only interested in selling and marketing products to women to make them work toward staying young and pretty for men (and that's a lie in and of itself anyway, because up to 80% of those products don't work at all; and the ones that do are expensive, and have to be used constantly. The only way to stay young is to die young). Big Pharma are not interested in helping women have better lives, because that will enable them to impinge on their male dominance. Corporate men are like two-year-olds throwing a tanty whenever they come across a woman having symptoms of being a woman, especially in the workplace (how dare we?).

@Aastha Singh if you insist on "natural" processes then hair loss or erectile disfunction are two obvious choices. It is, however, symptomatic that both of these problems are not problems per se, but how society look at people who are affected. @Steve ShaneI’m not sure where left or right wing come in. Maybe my mention of religion, probably. Education and knowledge that ones life can change on a dime through no fault of their own is important, but I’m a bleeding heart, been lucky all my life, learned how to navigate healthcare somewhat, business somewhat & I sure didn’t do it my own. I respect people who use cash, have no debt (I don’t at the moment) and live within their means. No whining! Sometimes I fail in the whining dept there, but not often. It’s pathetic! I don’t suffer fools very long & no fiscal responsibility is a deal breaker. As far as the govt goes, it’s complicated & we spend too much time arguing over which “each side” thinks is fiscally responsible. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Steve Shane
Steve Shane Aylar önce
@Karen Edgmond well I definitely agree we need to stop blurring gender roles, I'm all to happy to be a stay at home father, do domestic chores...we should just encourage people to live in whatever way makes them happy and imo we need to start eliminating debt, every single elder, mentor and senior person in my life says...credit cards are necessity....me being a stubborn authority challenging turd can tell the world that its completely false...I havent had a credit card in 15 years, i own my house, own nothing on a new truck and several toys....I take months off at a time. Our society today focuses on useless feel good junk that ultimately harms society while ignoring what would truly improve society simple because it feels better. Women are fully capable today meeting and exceeding any man, child birth is the only real obstacle that will slow you in your career...with the right guy that can be minimized. If someone wanted to put forth an arguement for employers to top up maternity leave income to their full wage I'd be fully supportive....but many of the loonie left wing arguments are short sighted, ignorant and lack common sense.
Karen Edgmond

@Steve Shane Hmmmm. Men have their own hormone declines also. A testosterone lab test can be highly revealing and low T contributes to that back pain, fatigue, loss of libido, vitality, muscle mass, hair loss, & depressed mood. My understanding is that mens’ testosterone has declined overall, possibly related to the estrogen like chemicals that pervade everything, like BPA. Not only testosterone, but thyroid, parathyroid etc from forever chemicals like PFAS. I think there is a more gender friendly way to address both male & female issues, hormone related, society directed roles & the blurring of those roles. We can fight against each other or with each other for a better quality of life. Humans aren’t meant to live like most of us do. And we need to respect normal gender differences as well as naturally occurring blurring of gender & non-straight sexuality. Jes sayin.

Great job on encouraging women to thrive working a min wage job. Can we talk about how men regularly have sore backs, shoulders legs and suffer from poor sleep because they not only work a 60 hour work week but also partake in family rearing....wow, women really have it hard😅 staying at home cleaning and dealing with children that they wanted and willingly brought into this world😅 can we take men and big business bringing women the sanitary pad? Or should we just continue to force victim mentality down only womens throats for natural everyday life issues? Seriously women need to stfu about this crap....focus on succeeding that placing blame around you for your failures👍

I agree that more can be done to accomodate workers needs at different life cycles, but implicit in this analysis is a belief in meritocracy in executive and board level positions - that physical performance, gender differences in mental state such as anxiety, lack of ability to travel for reasons that reflect gender bias, etc, explain who rises to the top. Seems to me hierarchy itself is suspect. Despite how they are made to appear, promotions are largely not a function of achievement or promise of excellence - it's more about navigating complex power networks and career momentum/luck. To the extent that gender plays a role, it's pure and simple sexism.

@bear paw please point me to your so called studies of sociologists. Families were fine before it's now that's the problem. Divorce rates have never been higher. Like I said. If you think , this is how the world is supposed to be go live YOUR life that way . Don't get offended if no one else chooses to do that. Society is not changing. It's.not this easy to change society with things that don't make sense. You just live in a bubble and no matter what I or anyone say you'll never accept it. So I can't nor am I gonna try do anything about that. Aren't you the one who replied to the comment first and I'm the one complaining ? Okay. I find it interesting that whenever you get criticised you're response is that the person is insecure or emasculated . Says a lot about your character more than anything else
bear paw
bear paw 2 aylar önce
@Mahinder p Where do you see me complaining? I'm relying what sociologists have observed and what they're proposing to amend the struggles working families are experiencing. Women are a permanent fixture of the work force on top of doing most of the house work. It's expected of women to work at the same level as men. Something's gotta give sooner or later and I don't expect women to give up their economic independence either. You seem angry at society that's changing. Find yourself a submisive woman and make it work instead of airing your frustrations on a TED talk video. Don't expect women not to fight for their economic rights because it might make some men feel elasculated.
Mahinder p
Mahinder p 2 aylar önce
@bear paw if you believe that. Live YOUR life that way and lead by example don't complain that everyone needs to do it how you think they should. If you wanna be the dominant provider please find a man who's submissive and a caregiver and make it work. In Today's day and age if you're in a developed country everyone has an opportunity to be whatever they want. It's just not as easy as you people think it is to be successful Studies show that most women don't financially date down. They date men who make more than them because they need a provider. As I said before. Men don't find competitive aggressive men attractive and definitely not someone men are gonna marry. In the same way women don't find submissive obedient men attractive
bear paw
bear paw 2 aylar önce
@Mahinder p Nah, that's some antiquated bullshit. Todays economic situation overal demands women in the work force. Therefore women deserve the exact same economic opportunities as men do. And men deserve the exact same parenting benefits (and responsibilities) as women. This model of equally shared work and home responsibilities is working and couples who implement it report the highest satisfaction with their lives. Do you know what women also don't find attractive? Men who want to dictate to them how to live their lives.
Mahinder p
Mahinder p 2 aylar önce

@bear paw I am pointing out: you will see differences between the occupations the genders choose. But our government looks at male achievement when it is in their favor and says, "unfair" and passes laws requiring bigotry against men. (2015 law in California requiring bigotry against men when forming corporate boards). The 95% male fatality rate exposes that you will have, absent of injustice that must be corrected by law, differences between the 2 genders. The bigotry against men has to stop.
Mahinder p
Mahinder p 2 aylar önce
@bear paw again, it's not about you being okay with women in construction or not. The point is that there aren't lines of women lining up to become a construction workers or a police officer which is fine. You mentioned that your sheriff said that women don't belong in the police force. Why isn't anyone up in arms about that ? ( Idk if this is true or not ) The reason is society understands that there are roles for men and women. There is pressure on men to take up responsibility and women to be the primary caregiver and supporter. I'm assuming you're a women. Did you have to fight for attending science clases in your life ? ( Again idk if this actually happened or why ) don't use the struggles your ancestors might or might not have gone through as an excuse to "feel" oppressed today. My ancestors were prosecuted for 200 years which left my entire country at an economic disadvantage. Am I sitting here crying that the world needs to treat me special..no you learn and you make the best of it. If you wanna be a CEO or a partner. Go fight for it like everyone else. Level Playing field. Successful Employers don't care what you're gender is they just need competent employees who'll do the job. All I'm gonna say is if you force employers to give you benifits because of your gender that they can get away with not giving men. Don't complain if just end up hiring more men
bear paw
bear paw 2 aylar önce
@Mahinder p A lot of women who try working in "extreme" jobs are met with adversity from the male side. In my country the police chef is actively involved in removing women from police force because as he openly admits the "Police is not a place for women". Women were socialized differently for centuries to occupy different places in society and had to fight for a right to attend science classes at school, not only home making classes. Now that they try to execute their agency in society it's still met with backlash like in the Blizzard debacle, which may be just the top of the iceberg. What you interpret as some sort of natural order of things I see simply as the outcome of a secific process of socializing policy. I have nothing against women working in construction.
bear paw
bear paw 2 aylar önce
@weldsj Because the men who die at work occupy a different work place in the work force as the men who become CEOs. You are overfocusing on occupational gender differences while completely missing class differences that divide the society even deeper than gender. I'm not at a gender war in here, you are.
weldsj
weldsj 2 aylar önce
@bear paw Everything you write is incorrect. If men make up 95% fatalities in work place, then we can intuit men's place in the workplace is different than women's. I'm in my late 40s and I entered peri between late 2016 and late 2017 and had my last period Dec 2018... Between then and now, hot flashes have been my primary annoyance...that, some fatigue and brain fog. Prior to covid-19 remote work from home -- I was in the office regularly. And, that would mean during meetings I'd break out in hot flashes. I decided to act like it was a part of my norm. I'm hot - well, I just break out my hand fan and cool myself down -- without breaking a beat. I had my colleagues and boss ask me "Are you ok?" And, I'm honest -- "I'm having a hot flash...it will subside in a few... so, anyway -- back to the topic...." For me, I take ownership for health -- and I'm thankful that those symptoms do not affect my work to the point where I have to take time off... and I empathize with those women who have to. I think this is a fascinating topic!

@bear paw No, we are not against black voting rights, we are FOR election and voter integrity. It's racist and a slap in the fact to PoC when the left tells them they can't get an ID. Really? You have to have an ID for getting insurance, car, house, license, to get into college, get a loan, and so much more, yet, not for voting? Why? Because the dems can't win if they require ID and they know it, so they use this logical fallacy of blacks can't get an ID or afford one so that ANYONE, even dead people, can vote by mail. It was done in 2020 and it will continue to be done in the future. Facts: the dems created the KKK, voted AGAINST civil rights, voted against women's rights, owned slaves, and so much more. Learn about their history. Oh, and the whole southern strategy is a myth. People switched parties, but the parties never switched. This is a leftist talking point and one that has been debunked ad nausem. And, plus, why bring up race? This whole thread was about menopause. Jeesh.

@Anthony The bullshit you're spewing is as insidious as it is transparent. It's funny how the modern republican party is at active war against black voting rights but internet dipshits like you are too cowardly to even own their past racism from before the parties ideologies flipped, lmao. The 'Republican" party from the civial war era was fighting for abolition of slavery, but that party has nothing to do with the Republican party of today thanks to Nixon's southern strategy. It's literally just semantics nonsense. The parties have changed their names, that's the gist of it. On policy the Republican party is dogshit and everyone knows this. Even the party itself knows this, that's why they've completely given up on even running on policy. The only way repubes can even hold on to a majority are their gerrymandering tactics and voter disenfranchisement. Democratic policies are far more popular, which is why that one Republican was panicking in the leaked call about how popular they are and once implemented, no republican would ever dare to dismantle them. People in Florida and Texas looooove their Obamacare LOL. Even moronic Trump failed to come up with ANYTHING to replace it. So, spare me this drivel, we both know it's bullshit. The gigantic gap in wealth between white and black households was started by the government itself when it failed on its promise of the 75 acres and a mule to the free black families after restoration. It was the government who excluded black people from the affordable housing program which in turn allowed the whites to accumulate siezeable wealth through inheritance. And so on and so forth. The govt was ACTIVELY involved in keeing the black poor, so now dipshits like you spewing crap about handouts and trying to distract the black from voting in their own interest is just pathetic! It's obvious why you keep failing and why progressives are starting to slowly take the scene. People are fed up with this crap and pulling wool over their eyes. The ONLY thing Republican (and corporate Democrat) politicians care about are CORPORATE handouts and socialism for the Rich. And that was abundantly clear by literally the only thing Trump succeeded with in his presidency: pushing through the corporate tax cuts. Trump tax cuts have cost the American tax payers 4 trillion dollars by the way, but I'm sure that's not "victimization" at all. I'm sure heroes like you feel super empowered by being rubes to the rich.
Anthony
Anthony 2 aylar önce
@bear paw I understand the words just fine. What you don't understand is that your principles aren't designed to end racial injustice, but actually to perpetuate it. Your side (which is the side that supported slavery, and the side that disarmed the blacks by the way) loses control of the black population if the black population realizes they don't need the government for handouts and Affirmative Action. If the black population finally frees itself of these most insidious chains, they'll no longer vote Democrat. And that is all the left cares about: power. Maybe someday you'll realize all of this just as I did, and you'll see that handouts crush cultures. They convince populations that they are victims, and when people are convinced they're victims, they act like victims. I don't want to create victims. I want people to rid themselves of dependence on government. Only self reliant people are free.

People are good and bad. There are good people and bad People. Women are just as capable of being malicious as men it's just that they do it differently. And also, what's your point exactly. It's called drive esp. towards mastering your environment. Which is connected with smth scientists call testosterone, and we men just have more of it (even though it's dropping for both genders for a while now) and for a good evolutionary dictated reason. That's why most jobs especially corporate jobs were CREATED & dominated by men in the first place. And all that because of... women..in a way at least, due to their inherent selective mating preference for high/ higher than theirs status, making climbing the wealth/ competence hierarchy seem like a viable option for a male to successfully attract a female. Understanding that brings you peace between 2 genders actually, makes u realise that in a way we're all 'victims' not just women, we are in this together due to our brain inherent conditioning, and there's nothing wrong with it... unless you've been hurt and you're resentful, vengeful getting your ego fill and your drive feeding of of feeling you're a victim towards the system that you don't feel like u can be a successful part of, happens a lot especially when you're younger, in chaos of modern society. I've been there myself quite a bit, but with understanding & awareness I'm never going back again naturally. Do shadow work, work on yourself have tolerance, empathy towards others so we can all be understanding and loving parts of functional society.

So, to employ women the business needs to cover so many variables - pregnancy, menopause, mental health days, severe period cramps - that they need government assistance to make them viable. Meaning, that while you complain about receiving 5 cents less, all the men around you are paying so you can keep your job and take your leaves. It makes me think of what is the actual pay gap - how much of a man's dollar goes to his female colleagues pregnancy leave, or period pains ...

@E con What I don't like is that I pay so much just to keep fellow women employed and what do I get? "Gender Pay Gap!" "Men have higher taxable income, on average, than women. In 2016, estimates suggested that men earned 59 per cent of all taxable income. Projections indicate that roughly 66 percent of all federal personal income taxes in 2016 will be paid by men and 34 percent will be paid by women." - situation in Canada. This is the entire bullshit. Feminists don't look at the bigger picture. ""In the last tax year men paid £92 billion in income tax whereas women paid £36.8 billion, which is 60% less." " - UK, 2013. So, men pay MOST of the taxes! This is just incredible to then have women say "gender pay gap" while they also make use directly and indirectly so businesses are able to cover pregnancy, menopause, and other female related issues in the work place.

As a 50 yr. old going through it, my first response is, DUHHHH!, and then I have so many thoughts on this, but I really wish I had known back in HS how bad it would be, I wouldn't have listened so much to the feminist rhetoric at the time and possibly made different decisions with my life. The best thing you can do for yourself is to have a partner who's not affected by hormonal swings that can pick up the slack for you, and now with tech and home employment options it's sooo much easier. The biggest obstacle to any woman trying to go her own way will be government regulations impeding startup businesses in the future. An independent economy with all the flexibility in the world is already underway, the only thing that can stop it will be government interference.

@Thomas De Quincey It helps everyone equally. The original feminists wanted equality, not special treatment, just to be treated equally and fairly. The competition for equitable outcomes is extremely flawed. It leaves women feeling like failures when they are hit with menopause or just have trouble dealing with regular menstrual cycles. It's unfair to constantly barrage young women with pressure to perform like a man. (I'm not blaming men, I'm blaming other women) And people wonder why we're so depressed, smh.
Thomas De Quincey
Thomas De Quincey 2 aylar önce
Why would Government regulations effect women more than man? If you made Government regulations less of an obstacle for women, you would also be making them less of an obstacle for men. And as men are already "ahead" how would this be helping women?

We would bust work out only to be rewarded by more work, while Nick and the most senior guy just turtled around. I know females have needs, but people exploit kindness and care all the time. At 53 I will say this…. Watching both sides of the woman in my family has been a HUGE lesson. Being in the Health and Fitness community for well over 30 years now…. According to my ‘genetics’ and family history as it stood wasn’t looking to be a fun part of this ride. Keeping Alcohol and Sugars to a very very very low intake and having physical practices and keeping my food choices basic and clean for the most part… has made ALL the difference in the world. If a person is NOT doing any of what I mentioned… that needs to be looked at. Your work place is not a place to drag your personal issue to, it is actually a place where you can take a break from them. I’m not suggesting to pretend nothing exist, but I am suggesting, if you are not doing something to help yourself, don’t try and put your own accountably or responsibilities on to others. It’s very very hard to want to help people who do not step up and help and want to help themselves. Human beings in general would suffer less if they kept their diets cleaner, had much less alcohol and sugars, and took up some physical activity. Yet, most who suffer won’t. You can have different results to your journey and relationship with menopause if your willing to invest in yourself. I have seen it happen time and time again and have been doing it myself. Testing the boundaries of what I have mentioned. Excuses are everywhere, stop looking, keep things simple…

Sitting in air conditioning and having a hot flash sounds a lot nicer than working outdoors in 95°F heat, high humidity AND THEN having a hot flash.
