The funniest thing about this was that no other band wanted this particular spot in the show. But Freddie was smart enough to know it would be broadcast in the USA at prime time and he took it over his agent's objections. People who had never seen Queen live got a taste of the magic, talent and charisma of the group. The rest is history.

@dtmateo I list RJD as one of the top three metal/rock singers but I’ll give Mercury the edge because of his talent in performing that goes far beyond his specular vocals. Though a better technical singer, RJD simply didn’t come close to the passion and charisma the Mercury embodied. Just my opinion…

@Jeff Morrison What did I just write, what was your reply and how did that differ? And why introduce a K-Pop boy band or a former Disney star into the conversation? Even at the peak of Queen’s popularity there were forgettable teeny-bopper acts, nothing new under the sun … readingcomprehension 🤦‍♀️

I cry tears of joy every time I watch this. This is my Beatles on Sullivan performance. Watch Freddy just slay every moment. Queen classics. Queen recent stuff. He’s all in. The vocal call and response are legendary. He may or may not be the best front man ever, but this is a really good argument for why he was. Who is better? When? And why?

@Neil Taggart 90 baby, Cobain never commanded the stage the same way Freddie did; there’s no way to compare the two. This dude was a legend; not saying cobain wasnt; just a different energy. Queen invited having the audience just as important as the show itself. envious of anyone that got to see first hand that era in music that will never be replicated..

I'm a Rolling Stones fan, but this energetic performance by Queen even beats The Rolling Stones' performances or those of the Beatles, the Who and other world famous stars! Every act had a strict 20 minute time limit. Queen had rehearsed their set, cut out verses of songs, and had it down almost to the second--if you watch the end of We Are The Champions, you'll notice a little red light at the front of the stage come on just as the song ended. Their set was tight, focused, and it did indeed steal the show. Although, they were followed by Bowie, and he put on a hell of a performance too.

I watched a pretty good amount of the Live Aid performances when it aired. No other band played to the live audience and the TV audience like Queen did. Their set was so perfectly tight and just flowed. Watching the crowd bouncing up and down during "Tie Your Mother Down" was awe inspiring then, and still is today. After Queen got done and left the stage, other bands just paled in comparison. It's the reason no one wanted to follow them. They most definitely stole the show.

Merlin Aylar önce
@Chris James still had number 1 singles and chart toppers in the 80s though is the point, America isn't really relevant because Queen are a British band and not many people in Europe care whether bands are popular in America or not.... And also they weren't an old band because they made pop rock popular - and were the best during the 80s. A whole new era of music, hence why everyone only remembers Queen from live aid because they could out perform anyone even with different genres of music, hard rock, pop, they did it all to huge success in the 80s and made more money from their 80s songs than 70s - which tells you everything.
Chris James
Chris James Aylar önce
@Merlin you're talking about hits in England..... They were finished in America by 1983. They were only touring western Europe by 1985 - not world tours. Yeah, they were still a popular act in some European countries, but an old act, and certainly not the biggest band in the world like someone said! And to repeat, they were thinking of breaking up in 1985. They thought the band was on its last legs. Live Aid extended their careers by another few years, then Freddie's death made them immortal.
Merlin Aylar önce
@Chris James sorry but in the 80s Queen practically reinvented themselves from the 70s with pop-rock and were still hugely successful and had sold / broken records in the 80s, like Under Pressure, I want to break free, Radio GaGa, Another one bites the dust, Love Kills, and even the flash songs. All these were released 1980-84 so I afraid you are just wrong to say queen wasn't a hit during the 80s - they were still hitting no.1 at the chart lol. you might be referring to their break when Freddie went solo for a couple of years but they were the number 1 pop rock band of the 80s
Chris James
Chris James Aylar önce
@Merlin 1985 was almost the era of Guns and Roses.......Queen were an old act, on the verge of breaking up. The fact they were playing an afternoon/daytime set should tell you their standing, at the time.

@Dale Viker Petty politcally incorrect for the sake of it nonsense, anyone can see this was an exceptional occasion and performance. Queen as a whole were great and Freddie, his voice as magnificent as one could hope for and brimming with energy, was loving every second of it and the crowd (clearly full of Queen fans, singing along from the get-go without prompting) responded. They were captivated, eating out of the palm of Freddie's hand as he strutted around, using his wonderful voice to improvise and play around, his showmanship was irresistible. Queen were hugely and widely popular and remain popular today. They were the band of spectacular rock songs, with a lead singer who was recognised and commonly referenced as one of the very best male vocalists of all time. That's not woke revisionism, Queen became very big years before Live Aid and Freddie was clearly an incredible singer and performer.

The energy at that concert was unmeasurable. You just felt that any moment the whole stage was going to explode. We were hanging on Freddie's every movement. There were people crying during 'We Are The Champions' including me. What a day...

@yikes Yes, you're right about the solo careers. It was the done thing at the time with many groups, Roxy Music and Brian Ferry for example. There was never any dispute in Queen to my knowledge, and I grew up with them figuratively speaking. Also in the film there were never any serious threats from EMI. Queen were well established. They had already recorded 3 successful albums before 'A Night At The Opera', and they could do nothing wrong at this stage. Plus to my recollection Kenny Everett played bits of the song that we young teenagers recorded feverishly on cassette with the microphone held against the radio speaker and eventually got the whole song. Another aspect of the film I am odds with is the portrayal of Freddie's homosexuality. There was a lot of macho 'gender bending' going at this time, glam rock, Bowie, Sweet, Slade etc.. We thought at the time ALL of Queen were gay because of the name.. We didn't care. We absolutely loved them for what they were and still are today. 🙂

I was born in 84 but me and my sister went through a huge Queen phase, had all their albums, some vinyl and then CDs, and we recorded them also on tape to take their music everywhere on our sony walkmans xD We would get our hands everything we could find, like once when we were 12 we went to a book fair and saw a book about Queen, we spent our kid savings on it. It was like finding a treasure, we were still learning English and that book motivated us to learn faster. I have few good memories from childhood, but many good ones associated to Queen. I feel younger and energised when I watch Freddie, although sad at the same time and I guess many people feel the same way. I find it's an interesting phenomenon the feelings he evokes on people born even after his time. About the movie, I thought it was really good and ended on a positive note, my only criticism is that they went too far with the solo careers drama because as I recall there really had been no drama at all as all band members had their own solo projects except perhaps John Deacon, and it was no secret nor a big deal as they made it out in the movie.
