If you want to make old school boom bap beats, you DO NOT need to buy an MPC to get that old school sound. In today's tutorial, I show you how you can use whatever you have now to make these kinds of boom bap beats!
Mutant Drums: beatbatterkits.com/products/m...
Komplete Start: www.native-instruments.com/en...
Even though this video was made using FL Studio, this can still apply if you are using Ableton, Logic, Garageband, Maschine, or any other DAW!

You don’t need an MPC or any other gear to make beats but the feeling of making music with an hardware equipment is by far more interesting/inspiring than a mouse a keyboard and a screen :)

@Threezy's World the spirit of making beats is having fun while u make them and hardware instruments are way funnier than a mouse and a keyboard. :) if u don’t understand my point it’s probably cus u have never tried.

You don't need anything. The spirit of making beats is figuring out ways to work around your limitations. Also the other think is more stuff equals more stuff to learn.

@Navie D I look at it from this perspective. Because I'm such an intelligent genius. Pizza. Yes... Pizza. Everyone would agree that pizza from a brick oven has a very very distinct taste. Quite delicious actually. Not hard to imitate, but your average pizza eater probably can't tell you "why" they like brick oven pizza. Or why it tastes better. They just know that it tastes different, and to some, waaaay better than regular ol shitty pizza. Now, you can put all the ingredients together that you want, using every recipe at your disposal and make pretty damn good pizza at home in your oven. Shit, you could even go to Home Goods (if you don't mind funny gay jokes about Home Goods from your friends) and buy one of those little pizza stone thingys and get pretty close to a pizza that tastes like it's from a brick friggin oven. But it's not brick oven pizza. And it never will be. Now I know there are probably flaws in my analogy, and I'm sure the FL lunatics are gonna jump all over me because, well, you know, complexes and stuff. And I know that daws like FL and Abelton etc all come with so many bells and whistles (literally and figuratively) that can be used to replicate just about any sound known to man. In fact, I'm pretty sure that you can make a feather landing on a bed 100 feet away from your microphone sound like an ostrich farting with the right halftime and compressor settings, but there is something that happens when you are using a piece of hardware like an MPC that no plugin or one shot can replicate. And that's your performance. There is an energy that gets captured in the music that can't be explained. The same way that Photoshop, no matter how sophisticated of a program, can never duplicate the sheer awesomeness of an end to end graffiti burner. Or a guitar plugin can never duplicate an actual guitar plugged in. (Wordplay bars) Yes, people can make amazing sounding music with the tools available today, obviously. And don't get me wrong, I am a fan of many who use FL exclusively. And sure, the average listener probably can't tell the difference between a beat made on FL vs one made on an MPC and they probably could give a shit less even if they could hear the difference. But there is definitely a reason why so many mouse click beatmakers are trying to replicate an MPC. Cheers.

Facts, it's not debatable either. We don't make music for the "end user" unless you're a proud bot....we make music to have fun, hardware is fun af.

@Navie D I agree. For me imitating how hardware would sound is like a good sudoku.

You definetly don't need an MPC to make old school beats but the fact that an MPC doesn't have all the features that a DAW has is what makes it unique. Especially older MPC like the 60, 3000 and 2000: if you don't have the fx board installed, you can only change the pitch and add a low pass filter, and that's it! That really forces you into making a beat sound good with a limited amount of "tools", without getting distracted about what type of reverb, delay, compression plugin to use, that's what I love about the MPC! (hope this makes sense, English is not my first language 🤣)

Here's a fun fact: 10 or more years ago, I used to put the word "MPC" in the name of some of the beats I made in FL Studio and rappers would assume that they were made using my MPC1000 or 2000xl. Of course, if they asked I told them that they were 100% made in FL and show them...sometimes they chose a different beat to buy and sometimes they stuck with their choice lol.

Cool video! Another idea is to take into account that people back then didn't want the music to sound lofi, so they used gear that was high quality during recording and mixing but even that gear added some harmonic distortion to the sound unintentionally. I love that you have decimort2 which is an excellent plugin for replicating the sound of hardware samplers. So for instance one could take a sample, and put into the FPC or SliceX, route that to a mixer channel, put a Fruity balance (gain stage into the plugin) then put Decimort2 and set it to MPC60 and "try" to make it sound clean, but decimort will still apply some character to the sound, then run it into the Lindell 80 channel for the 1073 mic pre, and EQ, into a virtual tape machine of some kind that gives you the multitrack tape sound, then you can export the stems and do a mix of those stems with an SSL emulation or you could just print the Lindell session with master tape on the master bus after the Lindell 80 bus plugin. This is for that "Tribe Called Quest" sound. Then during mastering you could throw Abbey Road Vinyl and give it that mastered to vinyl sound. So, in summation, use the plugin equivalents of studio gear used during that time period, and "aim" to make it clean as possible with that gear, and you get the sound, all with its unintended lofi sexiness. If you were alive at that time period, nostalgia will instantly kick in hard.

I understand what you're trying to pass with this video and you're right, we do not need something like an mpc to make - in this case - boom bap. But having only that little machine - and not having a ton of plugins that make all the work for you -, you really let your creativity roll. Everything needs to be - in some way or another - meticulously chosen. It's a craft you can replicate on a computer, but, you cannot feel the same kind of "magic" from it.

Dope video 🔥 I think MPC has a better quantizing algorithm than say FL which I use so I do a lot of nudging. Other than that distortion and vinyl/tape emulation fx can help wrap things up. Camel Crusher is goat 🔥🔥

You absolutely don’t need an MPC that’s correct. Fundamentally what’s important is the quality of the music you make. Nowadays you can make beats with a budget laptop and a free DAW. Hell you don’t even need that. Ultimately it’s about what you want out of your music. I use an MPC as it is a device purpose built for music production. It fees great just to switch it on and use it. straight away. But i also acknowledge that I could make beats of the same quality on my laptop using fl studio. I just prefer my MPC. Anyway what’s important is that you enjoy the music making process, so I would advise you use the equipment or software that you enjoy the most. Just my two cents.

The technique you used on the drum bus is bus processing not parallel processing you would need to send the drums to two tracks one with effects and one dry and then set the faders on these tracks how u want to get a mix between them to get the classic parallel technique but great video anyway 👍

I've been using FL studio since it was called "fruity loops" straight out. The one thing I can say is that you can't imitate MPCs "sound". The thickness and grittiness Of everything you run thru the MPC environment comes you bigger. I got a live some months back and use FL/mpc or studio one/MPC together. Learn an instrument.
Jermaine Flowers
Jermaine Flowers 3 aylar önce
@Navie D definitely, I've done it for years. It's a time saver for me and I find myself doing less making it "sound right" than just making the music.
Jermaine Flowers

@Mark Bruggeman yes but The reason all those saturation plugins is to emulate the what the MPC does automatically. It doesn't sound all clean and digital. All I need is a little eq compression to tame the drums. Then I add everything else in the daw. MPC has plugins too tho. It's basically a computer that does one thing extremely well.

This was much needed. Ppl promote these MPC’s like it’s the only way you can get a hip hop sound. I’m in awe how someone would deal with an calculator sized screen to trim and modify with nothing but a wheel and a few buttons like y? You have a whole computer? My MPD32 with Logic pro’s drum machine designer makes things so easy.

Working in a computer is faster and this equipment has much less limitations, it has more possibilities. However, MPC is much more fun. Creating with mouse and keyboard is counter-productive for me.
