Steve McQueen was one of Hollywood’s highest paid stars - and one of its most difficult, most rebellious and, when he wished, most charming. His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances.

Abandoned by his father, he was a reform school kid with nothing going for him and a giant chip on his shoulder. He joined the Marines, but never stayed far from trouble.

Then he discovered acting - and the woman who would be with him for most of his meteoric career.

His story is told with film clips from his greatest performances, including The Magnificent Seven, Love With The Proper Stranger, The Cincinnati Kid, The Reivers, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, and Bullitt.

Also shown are home movies - and the recollections of those who knew him best, including Steve’s first wife, Neile McQueen Toffel and their children, Terri and Chad, fellow actors Chuck Norris, Karl Malden, Don Gordon, as well as directors, producers, agents and the racing buddies who saw it all happen. Narrated by James Coburn.

RIP. When I listen to the idiocy being rammed down our collective throat by Hollywood's elitist wannabes, I'm more than ever grateful for Steve McQueen. As flawed and fallible a human being as he was, he did things his way. He wasn't at all ashamed of proudly being male.

Hollywood today is about promoting Marxist ideology. Think about it they have convinced the whole of America that abortion is a matter of contraception and a woman's right. Everybody knows that when somebody kills a pregnant women that two lives have been ended but that logic does not extend to a baby in the womb with a functioning brain and heart. I doubt America is finished look at the riots and the media's reaction and yet the elections are still considered a contest.

@ThatmaninrioA few mos before he was diagnosed with mesothelioma he became a "Born Again Christian" and his life was really changing for the better. It is too bad he died so young. He really felt he had a lot to tell people about the change he had made and how much it helped him see the failngs of his younger days. He realized he was walking way to far on the wild side for too many of his superstar years and he truly did want to make ammends. Accept for that he was ready to meet his maker. Near his last days he wound up having a bible study with with Rev. Billy Graham. If anybody could have witnessed for Jesus it definetly would have been "The King of Cool". Personally I lost two of my greatest idols Steve McQueen {11/07/80} and John Lennon {12/08/80} just a month apart from each other. So yeah 1980 kinda sucked for me. Peace, Michael Angelo +

Culture has changed and people are much softer today. In McQueens days the actors and actresses had life experience before they made it in Hollywood. Today they tend to come from college and have a relative in the industry. Completely different people. Steve McQueen, Coburn, Garner and Marvin all served in the military before they actually made it in Hollywood. Clint Eastwood served in the Army and he actually had his aircraft crash in the ocean and he had to swim to safety so that is his experience in Sully on screen.

There is a well known story, left out of this documentary that I feel is very important in describing the character of Steve McQueen. He was filming a movie in a large city, I forget the name of the movie and the city.., on the way to the set, Steve and the person he was with were passing an inner city “park”.., basically a dusty, grassless dirt field where some very poor young boys were playing baseball with no equipment or even bases. Steve made his friend stop the car so he could speak to the boys. The next day he stopped there again only this time he had the car loaded with brand new baseball equipment he purchased himself which he gave to the boys as well as spending time with them that should have been spent on production of the film. The only way you can live up to such a life, is to keep your eyes and heart open and never dismiss an opportunity to do good when you can. He probably did a thousand times more for the spirts of those young men that day then the mayor of that town, or governor of that state could ever do.

My friend had a interesting story about Steve McQueen. When he was still a teen, my friend had to deliver a brand-new, custom made Porsche Targa to Mr. McQueen, at his house in the Hollywood Hills. He knew that he'd never drive a car like this again, so he took it out on what he called, "a little test drive," doing donuts in the street, flying down the freeway at far above the legal limit, joyriding to his heart's content. He had so much fun driving the car that he was an hour late, keeping McQueen anxiously waiting for the car all that time. When he finally pulled up, McQueen was standing there. He looked at my friend and said slyly, "So, how does she handle??" My friend simply said, "O.K.." Then McQueen handed him a hundred dollar bill, and smiled. He knew.

@Chris B So right you are. I met my friend by doing the same thing he did, delivering cars. Sometimes I'd drive them across many different states, but usually, it was just between auto dealerships in Los Angeles. But on occasion, you may get asked to do things a little "different." Big stars get preferential treatment, even if its getting their new car driven right up to their door, even if by a kid who knew he'd never get to drive a car like this again.

The problem with directors is that the actor's slightest repugnance at the director's direction is seen to be rebellious but in reality the actor has the right to be upset when the director has taken up to much time in setting up the shot while the actor is waiting around all day. Overall, the reverence that directors expect should be the reverence given to all actors' overall dignity!
