I first leaned about Baikal on Planet Earth but this has taught me so much more. These freshwater seals and the sponges and crustaceans make Baikal more like a freshwater ocean than a giant alpine lake. The seals are adorable. I thought it was cute how they named that one Baikal Seal pup Nadia.

There are other locations where freshwater seals exist; A few in Finland, The Saimaa ringed seal (Finnish: Saimaannorppa) is a subspecies of ringed seal (Pusa hispida). They are among the most endangered seals in the world, having a total population of only about 380 individuals.[2] The only existing population of these seals is found in Lake Saimaa, Finland (hence the name). They have lived in complete isolation from other ringed seal species for around 9,500 years and have diverged into a morphologically and ecologically different subspecies of ringed seal[3]. The population is descended from ringed seals that were separated from the rest when the land rose after the last ice age. This seal, along with the Ladoga seal and the Baikal seal, is one of the few living freshwater seals.

Did anyone else notice he said these seals grow 6 feet long and weigh 340 pounds? He must be talking about a completely different species from the ocean. These are tiny seals.

Yes, I figured that because the lake species is smallest species in world only half that size. Overall the documentary was very good and informative so I was surprised they messed this up.

They split from arctic ring seal and are a close relative to the caspian seal the only other land locked seal. It’s believed they are smaller do to a similar effect as island dwarfism.

@Brad Bartkus ya...I just dont think more invasive species is a good idea. Still an interesting thought though! Maybe if seals were in the lakes in recent history and reintroduced, sorta like how a lot of eastern states from Illinois east want to reintroduce elk, bear, bison, and cougar
Brad Bartkus
Brad Bartkus Yıl önce
@Agamemnon vs Socrates The Great Lakes already have invasives that were brought over in ballast water from the Black Sea, like zebra and quagga mussels as well as the round goby fish.

That would be interesting...its a niche left largely unfilled in the region, closest would be otters. Other than humans I feel like theres a lack of predators, especially in Michigan, Erie, and Ontario. Maybe black bears?

@johndoe 695 I love learning about Finnish and native Siberian languages! They sound so beautiful to me.
johndoe 695
johndoe 695 Yıl önce
I don’t know if you care, but the russian word ”nerpa” is actually a loan word from my language. We Livvi people are the indigenous people of Lake Ladoga (the biggest lake in Europe where my grandparents lived, we used to hunt the seal before the industrialisation and mass exploitation of the area which almost made the species go extinct) and we have an freshwater ringed seal species that has been isolated for almost 10 thousand years and we call it ”njuorpu/njorpu”. That’s were Russian ”nerpa” comes from. Finnish people also call their isolated freshwater ringed seal ”norppa” and both the seal and the word are related, since Ladoga and Saimaa are connected by the Vuokša/Vuoksi river and we both are Finnic people..

sir coolguy I’m guessing from the word cull and them being described as “official hunters” it’s something to maintain seal populations from becoming too high or to allow to fur market to profit in an organised and more sustainable way however I couldn’t say for certain. Either way as far as i am aware the seals aren’t endangered or protected and the hunters need money at the end of the day so they have no real justification to stop them.

Trish Planck
Trish Planck 19 gün önce
Indeed! 5,000 seems like a very high number to be hunted. As with many things that humans “harvest” it’s quite likely that they will over-hunt these animals and bring them to the brink of extinction.
