The single biggest reason why start-ups succeed | Bill Gross

TED

5 yıl önce

Bill Gross has founded a lot of start-ups, and incubated many others - and he got curious about why some succeeded and others failed. So he gathered data from hundreds of companies, his own and other people's, and ranked each company on five key factors. He found one factor that stands out from the others - and surprised even him.

isn't it not a great business idea in the first place if it isn't timed right? maybe it was not a great idea to launch the entertainment website when there were broadband penetration and codec issue

Successful people don't become that way overnight. What most people see at a glance-wealth, a great career, purpose-is the result of hard work and hustle over time.

With uber and air bnb did anyone try concepts like those earlier? I don’t think so, not really. And would they still have worked if they came later? Seems likely. I think timing is important, but some of this analysis just seems like hind sight is 20/20. I vote product/service itself is most important. Also its easy for success to look like timing when the ‘timing’ was brought about by superior product + execution.

I love the way this was explained. I knew timing has a lot to do with success, but perhaps not to the extent it actually does. This is why it's so important to keep your eyes and ears to the ground and really listen to what people are saying.

I feel like the right time is when you’re ready. I do not think that timing is important e.g. TikTok is competing with its large predecessors like FaceBook, Twitter and TRshow. I think it’s the idea, the quality and getting the customers to know about your product.

Great point; presumably it's easier to know if your timing is late because the market will already be saturated? Might be a good idea to postpone the launch until the consumer base is ready. A metric of some kind might help with this, even a canvas survey, e.g. polling all boomers, have you heard of X technology (the predecessor technology)? If your base have low awareness of the predecessor, they probably won't be interested in your current. I remember when I got my first phone with capability to connect to the internet. I was so excited and tried to explain to my mom. She didn't seem that interested although today she uses a smartphone for banking, social media, etc.

Seriously, he lost me when he said he retroactively picked famous successes (AirBnB) and failures (Pets.com) and judged them by a bunch of subjective criteria while knowing the outcomes. It would have been much more impressive if done prospectively on a random sample of companies (i.e. you judge the team/product/timing BEFORE you know the outcome). Otherwise it's just poor science.

I think Timing is the result of the execution of all the weighted average of other key factors, especially Team and Ideas. Unless you're Steve Jobs, the team will make an Idea solve a real pain point that has a big enough audience.

My customers had X Y Z problem __________. 2. matter to my customers. 3. ___________ will pay for it". Please let me know what you think?

POINTLESS as he has said nothing about why start ups succeed at all. He refers to startups that succeeded at a time when changes were happening but other startups doing the same thing at the same time failed. We dont know why they failed and these ones succeeded when they all started at the same time. So timing isnt it!

Its a nice and clear presentation, however based on my experience I would not state that timing is the biggest success factor. It rather is how well a problem of the customer is getting solved. Timing is the result of a product perspective, which is the most common mistake made. People tent to think in a product that they would like to bring to the market, instead of deeply understanding a problem and need of a customer and creating the best possible solution for it in the form of a product and right business model.
