Whether you're trying to get your 808s to hit harder, or you want to figure out a way be more expressive with your 808s, this video will show you a few really useful tips that will help you elevate your beatmaking skills to make better beats. Primarily, the techniques in this tutorial video apply to FL Studio but you should be able to apply these tips and tricks no matter what DAW you use.

Direct Wave is one of the most slept on plugins in FL Studio. I forget exactly how to do it, but I remember seeing a video on how to use it to sample VST instruments to save CPU.

I used to box my 808s. The purpose isn't so much to cut the tail but just another way to prevent bleeding in some cases. When I used it it was mostly on a case by case basis when needed I'm which case I would drag all the notes out to preserve the amount of tail wanted whole still preventing bleeding. It was basically another way of using cut itself. After awhile I figured out that I could make a really small cutoff note at the end with the velocity all the way down. Which is the way I do it now on my MPC. Only I don't use samples anymore. I build custom 808s out of a sub preset on TubeSynth for every beat now. A tutorial on building custom 808s would be awesome! If you haven't already done so.

wow. that envelope tip about not making it a square is amazing. I got that technique from a drill producer, where it's common to have the 808 shaped like a synth and I translated that into my trap beats. this makes it way better, thanks

I’m lazy and just use the 808s in Flex, but these are some real knowledge gems. Especially using DirectWave for oneshots is what I’m going to experiment with. I’m still curious about your reverb game, which makes your beat sound so full with not that many layers. Hint.
