A primer on how to choose architectural building materials. In part 4 of the architecture short course I share my personal system for selecting materials and I walk you through the selection process for the case study residential project we've been following.

**RESOURCES** for a detailed look and review of my new material storage system (shown in the opening scene) as well as my favorite print, video and supplier resources look for the companion video to be released in the next few days. Also check:

The lesson is divided into five general categories:
1 - Physical characteristics
2 - Context
3 - Experiential qualities
4 - Cost
5 - Manufacturing concerns

Each category can be thought of democratically, that is, none is necessarily more or less important than another. Your design will begin to suggest what materials best represent your ideas.
Study the work of architects like Tadao Ando, Louis Kahn, Peter Zumthor, LeCorbusier or Aalto - and witness the depth of knowledge and skill they deployed using a relatively limited set of building materials: wood, concrete, glass, and brick. You can say quite a lot using a very spare palette of materials.

The real lesson here is that the material selections were a result of intentionally considering all aspects of the experience I wanted to create for our client as well as the necessity of building something durable and meaningful here in an extreme coastal environment. It has to look good and tell the right story. It has to comfort and shelter, reduce and minimize our impact on the site and recreate - in an abstract way - the quiet of the forest in the new place we’ve created.

It’s a tall order, but by following a process which prioritizes the most important characteristics for each part of the architecture you can find a methodology for choosing wisely.

Material selection requires you to be an observer and student of the built world. Study buildings you admire and note how the material qualities effect how you feel there. Choose a few simple materials and get to know them deeply. Concrete and wood are excellent places to start. And if you’re like Tadao Ando, perhaps make a career of. Learn to exploit their inherent qualities: heavy and light, cool and warm, malleable and permanent. Use these as a basis for your own explorations and tests to make your designs more truthful, more beautiful and more interesting.

Love seeing beautiful homes and just thinking that the products used to make their home look great are going to get destroyed. Most architectural beauty's aren't really designed to be lived in, or at least not for long durations. They are for professional people with no kids that are away on business 3/4 of the year. When I open a architectural magazine I just flip the pages and keep saying to wife and kids would destroy that over and over again.

It's good when clients see the materials as they will be, not as they are, and is willing to compromise on cost in order to ensure the delivery of a quality building with longevity and strength. Unfortunately most of the clients we work with don't look at it that way, and go against our advice to produce buildings of poorer quality, lacking simple elements which can save so much money and time later on. It can be frustrating to try and convince them material wise when you know what's best and what options will last longest and optimise the scheme, but in the end it is their money and they are simply employing our services to design something they ask for. Its our job to follow their brief, but also to have these persuasive conversations with them and to inform where possible. It's not necessarily always going to work in our favour, but if the client sticks to their guns then there are other options, and we just have to work with that. 'Cheap' doesn't always mean tacky, and even if they want generic materials which save time and cost, there are other ways of making a building successful. But materials for me are _so_ important, especially early on in the design. Clarifying the limits of potential materials with the client and getting a feel for their opinion even in the early concept design is vital to achieve a strong scheme, and can influence decisions later on in the process.
would love to hear more on materials , you are a great source of knowledge, keep it up!

In certain regions I've noticed that there are materials specific to the area or region. In Southern Florida I've noticed that red brick isn't typical for building a home but atypically, I've seen it used in a neighborhood in South Miami that I lived in. Can you tell me why or when they would be used for building materials or pavers?
