Man Builds HUGE Amazing LOG HOUSE From Crooked Trees in 9 months - Full Build (TIMELAPSE)

10 aylar önceInexpensive debt free MASSIVE Off Grid Log Cabin Build start to finish timelapse. Building with crooked logs is a challenge in every way. Not to mention every single log was Persimmon Tree, one of if not the hardest hardwood tree in my forest. Persimmons are so dense a 6 inch diameter 8ft long log section can weigh 300lbs. They make everything difficult, but they cost me nothing and I learned to love them for what they are. It definitely makes my home look unique. It's hard to believe that it only took me 9 months of hard work to make it live in ready. Here I've put together a timelapse of the last year of building, hundreds of hours of footage cut into about a 30 min video. I've done a lot of work to get the cabin to where it is now, and I thought it would be nice to have a video showing everything from start until now. Watching the shorter episodes, gives a completely different understanding of how the building was done. There will be more long form videos on the full build with even more detail coming soon. Did you have some sort of design to go by? Just wondering with spans and all, saw you were making built up beams for rafters and how did you figure the span for the footings? Also what type of wood logs are you using? Pretty impressive.

@Winterfar Thanks! I designed the build plans for the house. It’s unique to the size of our family (8 of us) so we had to custom make the layout etc. The Log home builders association offers up a ton of guidance. I also spoke to an engineer that helped me with the spans etc logs are all American persimmon

As a retired licensed contractor, carpenter of manly new home builds the last two thirds of my career I would like to tell you that you have a lot to be proud of. Not many people can build a house on their own period, much less of that caliber. To make yourself get up each day and work by yourself from daylight to dark is a lot harder than you would think. It takes a lot of self push and dedication. That roof build was incredible, should hold in the heat and out the bad weather. You did what only a very small percentage of people have done in the last 100 years. You have my fullest respect.

I think more builders will be respected for their dedication to build their homes and others with such high quality workmanship. Too many homes r built cheaply and homeowners regret it. Better to pay for good materials and qualified carpenters than most contractors. Not that all contractors r unqualified, too many corners r cut to save them money but not the owners. We have that problem here in Canada. And yes as a female I grew up doing alot of carpentry from my Papa. And I was rebuilding my home before I got hurt and couldn't continue. What puzzled me is why the logs weren't groove fitted on the corners to have the logs fit better on eachother? And top and bottom of logs flattened to fit like stacks? We have alot to learn from the Amish in how to make log cabins all from wood. Amazing woodwork they do is breathtaking. This place looks amazing too! Alot of hours and dedication. How long did it take to build this place?

I especially liked the use of spray foam in between the logs. I thought I was the first to think of this technique ten years ago but I’m sure now a lot of people have done it. It seems like a great and pragmatic way to avoid the immense labor of evening the log’s asymmetry through cutting and scraping.

I am in awe of this man’s skill sets. I wonder if he had to deal with a permitting process where he built this house. Where I live, restrictions, permits, fees, and inspections would made it nearly impossible for a one man crew to complete this project in nine months. All my respect for a job well done!

That's really incredible what you achieved with your family. Your log cabin should last a long time - the bones of your home are made from the only ebony tree native to North America. Persimmon is very tough and is incredibly split resistant.

Congratulations, Dave. If anyone ever built a tornado-proof house, this is it. I hope you have many long years of enjoyment and no question, your kids have been given a good example to start their lives. My grandfather, his father and brothers and their families came out to Eastern Oregon in 1878, in wagons on the Oregon Trail and built a large trading post and barn, root and cold cellars and a 5-bedroom house, using the timber on their land. They bought a steam-powered, portable sawmill to cut the planks. One of the brothers was a blacksmith and made all the fasteners and cut out the sections for the metal rooves. The trading post and barn are still standing and in use, after 144 years.

Hey Dave! Awesome. I know it took a lot of hard work to build this family cabin. Dude you're truly Blessed with not only the skills but an awesome family to help you. Glad you were not hurt falling thru the floor Joice. Been there done that. In fact, my ex-wife fell thru an AC vent in the living room while we installed hardwood floors. It was covered up by felt paper. She went down all the way to her hip. I tried for years for us to move to Alaska and build a Log Home, but others were not interested. I did a lot of research into making it completely self-sufficient. Water electricity heat and AC. Still couldn't convince the misses to move. She wanted to stay close to her family. Now Divorced and late 60s. Still might try. Only smaller. Thanks for sharing your dream. God be with you and Family. Shalom.

wow! That is impressive. So far I only saw people building log homes the complicated way by scribing each log. So this might be a little less elegant but a lot more practical and faster! And amazing was that you handled even the longest logs just by yourself! Why did you not use styrofoam in the floor as well? Thank you so much! Foam is much more expensive than fiberglass roll so I went with that in the floor and sealed it from the bottom with hardware cloth to keep out critters.

That was great to watch mate and I hope you are proud of your achievements so far. I am a family man myself renovating a house we just bought in Perth Western Australia. Looking after a family and working on a house at the same time is not an easy thing to do thats for sure. Our current project is turning our entire back garden all 1500 square metres of it ,into a productive permaculture garden. Raised garden beds, Greenhouses, Chook pens, etc. all need to be planned for and built during the fast approaching summer. On top of that I work as an Underground Miner flying from Perth to the Kalgoorlie goldfields on a 2weeks on 2 weeks off roster...so yeah time management can be an issue mate. You're so welcome. Back home,, Guam where I'm from,we can build wooden frames homes but only on off- the-grid areas like ranches, some beach areas. Guam is known for typhoons destruction, that's why more homes are build on concrete. My home is build in the middle 60's made out of rocks. My dad's brothers (7 of them, all deceased) assisted my dad in building the home I now own and it's sits facing the view of the ocean. You brought memories back to me, fom the start of you building the infrastructure of your land. Kudos to you. I watched this video from the beginning to the end , 9 months for you but only 29:08 minutes for me , What a good job for both of us . I especially ' liked ' the part where you fell through the floor . Most folks wouldn't have shown that part . Filming it allows the children to remember when they're adults the work that you did to give them a HOME , most parents film their children in embarrassing moments and then replay those pictures in front of the children's spouses later on in life .

How impressive. The engineering innovations alone that you incorporated just to place materials where needed them, was above and beyond the imagination capabilities of 99.99% of earth’s population. I'm an engineer and have been involved in many different aspects of construction throughout my 70 years. The only thing I question about your whole build is your finish flooring. How proud you must be! You did a magnificent job. I, like many others, am impressed.....

Hell for strong, dry, and warm! Admire your building techniques - not quite traditional, but great work. Especially like you including the pint-size building crew where possible. I am sure your family will enjoy the finished product for years to come. Should you build another, I strongly urge you to get a hand sledge about twice the weight!

@Dave Mead Does Same to you and your Family from ours. Here is something you might find interesting. I built a complete railing on the loft and down the stairs (the treads and stringers were all ponderosa pine bridge plank size) to the landing in front of the front doorway all from red cedar, also from our property. It took some doing to get it right but my friend it's the first thing people see when they walk in our home. We used an almost identical sized pair of trunks at the bottom of the railings that have beautiful flutes, where the roots went into the ground that looked as if it grew right out of the floor. To this day (some 20 years later now) we constantly get told how unique and beautiful it is. There is not 1 nail or screw in it either it's all done with pegs and wedge's or long oak pegs. You might consider something like this, the Red Cedar (that are considered an invasive species here in the Mountains of the West) is so beautiful when sanded absolutely smooth and about 10 coats of clear gloss polyurethane that are sanded smooth between each coat....it looks like it's encased in liquid glass and so easy to keep clean and very durable. Just a little tip you might like to do maybe.

@Randy Hill that sounds amazing! Yes I might do something like that. We needed a quick space saver staircase and the current one fits the build but I could always change it later. I love eastern red cedar we have tons of it I built tables and the front door on my other cabin from it. Have to plans to build another cabin joining the 2 structures out of cedar logs

@Dave Mead Does I have wished many times that these videos like this, people could if need be, post a photo for the originator of the posting only, then if the owner of the video wanted to he or she could share it. My description of what it took me about 2 weeks to complete now if my memory serves me falls way short of what the actual finished product looks like. The Local Paper did a little booklet for the tourist trade we get each summer called "Log Homes" of our area. And the Staircase I built was on the cover of that Magazine and they did a 2-1/2 page piece on our home to show several other features where we thought outside the box so to speak. We were so proud of that we had a copy of it framed and it hangs in our Office we built above our Log Workshop and Barn. Merry Christmas to you and a Very Happy New Year!

I’ve always dreamed of building a home like this. I have the land, the timber, the knowledge, most of the necessary tools, but I’m now too physically disabled to do the work. It’s truly a shame, as my wife and I would rather have a self designed log home in the country, than a luxury mansion in the city. Maybe, if I pray often enough and God is willing, he’ll provide the assistance I need to turn my wooded lot into a sturdy and beautiful home!
