Why do you wake up at night? What causes these awakenings that prevent sleeping through the night? How do these middle of the night interruptions lead to insomnia, the prolonged episodes where you desperately desire sleep yet cannot catch one wink let alone forty? Most insomniacs imagine stress, an overactive mind, or a genetic background causes this vexing sleep loss. Remarkably, these questions had never been researched until Dr. Barry Krakow and his colleagues conducted a study on 20 classic insomniacs, all of whom believed their problems were due to stress, racing thoughts or a genetic predisposition. In a landmark study, published in the journal SLEEP, they demonstrated 90% of awakenings experienced by these insomniacs were preceded by a disruption in their breathing while asleep. In effect, they found a major, and likely primary, cause for why people wake up at night and have continued to research and demonstrate this physiological breathing problem in thousands of insomnia patients. A lifelong insomniac, Barry Krakow was fortunate to gain seven years of blessed relief-four years in medical school and three at UNM School of Medicine, completing an internal medicine residency. Soon after, divine providence guided him to a sleep medicine career as a clinical specialist and sleep researcher, studying and treating chronic nightmare and insomnia patients at Maimonides Sleep Arts & Sciences, sleep medical center, and Sleep & Human Health Institute, sleep research facility. In the 1990s, Dr. Krakow learned first-hand how unwanted bouts of sleeplessness (insomnia) were not caused solely by the standard explanations found in nearly all medical and psychological textbooks. Insomnia was far more complex and ultimately proved to be intricately linked to sleep breathing problems. Since then, his quarter of a century quest to map out connections between insomnia and sleep-disordered breathing yielded results beyond anything he would have dreamed possible. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I make several trips to the bathroom and I wake up at night, but: I actually enjoy the time I am awake at night. I wake up every night at 2.30 or three and go to sleep two hours later. it's been like that for 30 years now. During my day I am not tired but okay, feel not so efficient. But the fact that I enjoy those moments (the only moments where my house is silent, fresh, kid and wife are asleep) makes me happy to have this "disorder".

Thank you. Great message. I used to enjoy very good sleep until a few months ago when I was prescribed certain eye drops, which I thought was the cause of my waking up at night with a very dry throat. Stopping the drops didn't help. Perhaps I need to check my breathing.

This is amazing! I have had a BIPAP machine for about a year. I had a hard time getting used to using it. A friend suggested I try the "nasal pillow" rather than the full face mask. I went from having 8-11 "events" a night to .8 to 2 events per night! I don't know how they decided not to give me CPAP, but I am so glad they did it. These machines are so expensive, that the wrong machine would have been a huge problem.

There are so many explanations and this is just one. So for this one I ask, why the same time every night? For the last ten years I went the first seven waking at 5am. I could deal with that as I was in the habit of nodding off around 1030p. Then in the last three years it became 4am, then 3am and now the pattern is waking at 2am. Hardly believe breathing is the cause, but I'll listen to any explanation in my search for a remedy. Why would I have a breathing problem at a certain time every night? And if so, why would I be so alert and not groggy? If I do nothing I lay awake, last night I took 10mg of melatonin which took nearly an hour to kick in. Waking again after 6am a bit groggy.

10mg melatonin that's a lot .. melatonin brings on the onset of sleep , it does not keep you asleep ,that drug might not be good as it competes w/ your natural melatonin

I appreciate your talk. I have multiple chemical sensitivity and am very allergic to vinyl ethers which are toxic to me and everyone. But I cannot use C-PAPs because of the gassing off vinyl eithers from the plastics in the machines and the material that the masks are made out of. The dental device that you showed is one I had and all I did was drool all over my pillow and got TMJ. On top of this , I am physically dependent on the benzos I have taken for over 30 years, so when trying to get off, that causes rebound insomnia,. My initial diagnosis was CFs and 2 months into the syndrome, I stopped sleeping and was prescribed those dangerous and addictive drugs. Now I do not know if most of my problem is the addiction or breathing issues. I have had 4 sleep studies; 3 of which concluded that I had upper airway restriction and the last test said I did not have that. In 2004 I was recommended to to get a UPPP and have my sinus polyps removed. That surgery was the worst mistake of my life. Everything became worse and I can barely breath though my nose now and post nasal drip goes into my lungs because I no longer have a uvula.

Get a little transistor radio - listen to Coast to Coast AM till you fall asleep. And I love my CPAP device. Standard, not bi-level. I can wear it, and put the covers over my head and not suffocate. For some reason, my wife hates that. And - I still get up at night to pee. Also taking supplements - B, C, D, E, (is there an F?) and a few others like K (Potassium). And a multi.

@Adr1ano hey how much sleep you get now and is it continue sleep or you wake up middle in the night
Adr1ano 6 aylar önce
@FOODIE MEGHA hello, you can still eat junk food, but in moderation. I mainly switched up sugary processed sweets for fruits, and I started following a high protein diet which has improved my physical appearance and my mental health. My sleep was really bad man. I would sleep in very late texting and playing games since I was 16. (I'm 19 now) . I really screwed up my circadian rhythm and everyday I would sleep at a different time. At first I didn't worry too much, but I noticed that the consequences were started to kick in. I would get random dizziness, low energy, fatigued, and worst of all I was gaining weight. When I went to doctor he said it must be "Chronic insomnia " because it lasted more than 3 months. My mind was so used to my old sleeping schedule, I had to give my brain time to re adjust to a normal sleeping schedule . It wasn't easy first few weeks but with effort, patience, and consistency anything is possible. it's never not too late man. Good luck !

This pissed me off. It's ancient news as a 'cure' for insomnia. It's like the people who say 'calm your racing thoughts, breathe deep, don't drink coffee before bed and read a book.' Newsflash- this does NOT WORK FOR PEOPLE WITH REAL SLEEP DISORDERS AND CHRONIC INSOMNIA!!!! I stopped sleeping- like not at all. It was so bad that I started having seizures and suicidal episodes. I had an overnight study in a sleep lab like he said. The results were- I didn't have any obstructed airways {sleep apnea} and the cause was unknown. I struggled for years and doctors didn't know what to do with me. Finally I found a medication that put me to sleep. Not perfectly, but enough to function. Fast forward ten to fifteen years later and I found out I have Adrenal Fatigue- where your body releases adrenalin at night, instead of in the morning. This needs to be addressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's so many people out there struggling and confused. Get your night time and morning cortisol levels checked with a saliva test. Just recently I found out I have a genetic mutation where my body doesn't create hormones properly.....including.....drum roll......serotonin and melatonin. Supplementing with these has made a huge difference because I was giving my body the hormones that it couldn't make, itself. There are LOTS of different causes of sleep disorders or insomnia....it is NOT a subject to make light of. This 'professor' is a joke and is selling nose strips for 1 type of easily fixed sleep awakening. He also doesn't even mention the people who can't even GET to sleep in the first place. PEOPLE- GET TO THE ROOT CAUSE!!!!!!! Wishing you sleep dreams and good luck, Jenette.
cooldude5699 Yıl önce
I recently experienced a traumatic event during the day that led to heart palpitations. For the past 2 months, I have been getting up at 3-4 am almost every day so it seems to me like stress or psychological factors might be the cause. I feel that this video may not be as comprehensive as it appears.

I have chronic insomnia...I didn't sleep (not for 1 second) for a total of 8 days...I went into total hallucinations. It was the worse. People that didn't know me thought I had to be on drugs, but my family stayed with me because it scared my kids to death with my hallucinations. I can't fall asleep without medication, or stay asleep without medication. So I don't consider what he's talking about to be true insomnia. An insomniac CAN'T fall asleep no matter how many sheep you count or meditation you do. I think it's a like any other disease like diabetes, etc. People that fall asleep naturally please don't take it for granted. When I see my husband fall asleep it makes me happy for him. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy..!!

I might be suffering from gut microbiome dysbiosis causes sinusitis or inflammation of nasal passages resulting in sleep disordered breathing more specifically UARS (Upper Airways Resistance Syndrome) which is different from sleep apnea. I heard polysomnographs dont detect UARS. Even candida is said to have linked to sinusitis. The main stream medical doctors are far from this research and not only the medicine they give are not helpful they make things worse. I guess regular use of otc antibiotic for frequent cold flu symptoms have led to a chronic illness. Its very hard to find a doctor who knows these things and patients are left clueless and have to do research on their own. Comment if any of you might be suffering from similar problems.

Maybe we just haven't accepted that we ARE SUPPOSED TO DIE. Stopping breathing sounds like natures way of saying times up. Have you ever seen these people with sleep apnea? They are circling the drain. Let them go. The way we keep people alive in our society for decades as chronic patients with no quality of life is horrible. Diet & exercise people...dont smoke, drink in moderation or not at all , take vitamins & avoid drugs. Walk every day. Focus on others, not yourself. If you are no longer helping the world around you but exist only to have others care for you....unplug your CPAP, repent of all your sins & go see Jesus where a new body awaits

I have sleep apnea, and I use the cpap machine and it's working great I hardly ever have an apnea, BUT..... I still wake up 5 am every single night, 3 hours prior to my normal wake up time. And no its not because I need less sleep because I'm using CPAP. No matter what time I go to sleep its always 5am on the dot and I feel wide awake 😳. Not a slow awakening. It's like a light switch.

To all here. Some more items to note here 1 If you have a sleep apnea of 30 or higher this means you stop breathing every other minute and this can give you a stroke or worst and kill you. You have to take this seriously The CPAP has saved my life 2 A lot of people have a hard time using the CPAP because it blows air all over the face Then the sleep clinic has set the pressure to hi to start. Not all out patient CPAP therapist do not know what they are doing

@Zad Rem 23:00 - get up when i wake up and cant sleep anymore Sometimes 03:00, 03:30,04:00,05:00. If i try to sleep longer i just feel worse, just dreaming waking, dreaming waking, half between asleep and awake basicly

Since my chemist charges 30 euros for 10 nasal strips I get them off ebay for cheap but they give me a rash either side of my nose. So annoying.

OK I'm at 7' minutes and all I got so far is bite on something in a little box" Oh 8' minutes in apnea? Not my problem nor his original description being agitated tossing and turning. I don't wake up looking for breath those who do it's obvious subconscious survival response.

I have chronic insomnia post sleep apnea surgery which was successful it's not just breathing.
