In January 2007 a photo album marked "Auschwitz: 21 June 1944" was made public. It revealed astonishing clues as to how the Nazi extermination team enjoyed a life that they ruthlessly denied their victims.
"They look almost like normal people. They are devils", says Auschwitz survivor, Regina Speigel. The photos were taken at the height of the holocaust and have helped researchers identify key Nazi killers. Dr Josef Mengele, aka the 'Angel of Death', is seen "smiling and laughing at this singalong during the most horrific period of murder in history. It's astonishing."

It doesnt take much to be a monster. You just need to be convinced that the person you're harming isn't like you

People are horrible to each other. We really are a terrible thing. It’s always been this way. We break promises, words, hearts, bones, love, life - we are so destructive. It’s been a terribly long time since I’ve been genuinely surprised at how low we humans will go.

I feel awful just watching this. I am sorry this happened and hope there really is a heaven where these people ended up and a hell for those responsible.

I think this is just a stark reminder that your everyday person can be turned into one of these people, all it takes are the right set of circumstances and rhetoric. It’s evil, but evil can come up to you wearing a smiling face, having a sense of humor and being polite. We have to remember this, for two reasons: 1. We must be able to prevent ourselves or our fellow people from going down these paths, and 2. We must be able to recognize people with beliefs like this, and it’s harder to do if you have this caricature of what evil looks like

The interesting thing about this video is it talks about how shocking it is that people can sit by while this happens, but we are all doing it every day. Me, you, the people in this video. We sit in cozy houses doing cozy jobs while people are being rounded up and murdered and genocides happen around the world all the time. We complain about not having the right coffee from starbucks while other people are being brutally murdered.

The horror and pain in the elder woman's voice and the haunting still in her eyes just did something to me. It's like obviously the horrors and the murders and brutal treatments happened. You'd have to be real stupid and inhuman to think they didn't happen. But for me, hearing and seeing it in that lucky survivor (lucky to survive but unlucky to have been there and have the vivid memories to the day she passed of old age) hearing and seeing it coming from her and off of her made it 101% real. Like, I know it happened but now I KNOW it happened, if that makes sense.

Guilt only exists if you get judged or it’s seen as wrong.

Mind boggling. Poor people who suffered under this evil were so unfortunate to be born in that period. A nightmare that we cannot even imagine.

If you truly believe what you are doing is righteous then you can do evil things and feel justified in it.

Once you dehumanize a person then the next steps are easy. Never take the first step and you will never be guilt of the last. My heart breaks for that dear woman and the many like her who survived. I kept wanting to hold her hand and weep with her.

What a fascinating photo album. The fact it survived is astonishing.

The scariest part for me, is that they were human. Despite the atrocities they committed, they could laugh, play and experience emotions just like the rest of us. I feel that as a society we try to dehumanize the irredeemable, as if we make them not Human it prevents us from looking inward at ourselves.

I think a lot about how far I would have gone under this regime. I am from germany myself, was in Theresienstadt at my last year of school and also visited Dachau in private, thinking of how such evil and disgusting things could be possible. But than I get into myself and think about it: Would I have resisted? Would I take the opportunity to get recognition under this regime and just went along with it? Today it breaks my heart to people suffer and die, but how would I act if I get told from the beginning of my life that jews are the evil in this world?

I watched this video in a state of disbelief. When I was young a Cuban buddy and I used to hit the Bridge clubs on the West Side. After the play was finished the points had to added up and we would sometimes help out. I was helping an older woman when I saw the tattoo on her arm. I froze for a second and then continued adding up the Bridge points because there is nothing you can say.

I think an important take-away from this is to know and remember that, before the atrocities started, these hundreds of thousands of people weren't serial killers, they were good soldiers, store clerks, administration workers, clerks, etc.... people like the people around you today, every day of your life. These people didn't just fly in one day when mass-murder and torture were suddenly deemed "normal" things to do to other people. They were always there. Here's the thing you must realize: people like this are STILL there, around you, right now. By the thousands. All it would take is another slow normalization of the demonizing of a particular cross-section of your fellow citizens, and many of the people around you, that you think you know well, would step up into their roles as monsters, to repeat history once more. Starting to sound familiar yet?

And everyone missed the point, including whoever made this and everyone in it. What the album is showing is that the people in the photos aren't "devils" or "exterminators". They were just ordinary people. Ordinary people who allowed narcissistic politicians to warp their thinking and assume their moral responsibility. Similar tragedies have happened since and will continue to happen until people learn the lesson from history. These people are no different from you or I.

All it takes is for anyone of us to be convinced that the fear in our hearts is valid and should be acted upon. Fear drives us to do terrible things.

“They almost look like normal people.” They WERE normal people, and that’s perhaps the most important and hardest lesson to learn from these pictures. They could have been us. We could be them.

My great grandfather and grandmother fled Germany during WW2. When grandparents passed away we were going through the attic and found my great uncle's uniform. It wasn't stored correctly and moths tore it up but it was an SS .uniform. we never heard about him ever. He apparently was killed in an automobile accident just prior to the war
