Follow these steps to help you introduce yourself in English and start more English conversations!
I’ll share how to introduce yourself in three different situations:
🏡 Introduce yourself to a neighbour
🏢 Introduce yourself at the office
🏫 Introduce yourself when you drop your kids off at school

Making a small talk with a total stranger is not too hard provided you start your conversation with a big smile and greeting. Talking about the weather or something about the neighborhood can be neutral and interesting to break ice with someone. Thank you Emma for this new lesson!

Sometimes (but I think that people offer a neutral or positive reaction *most* of the time!) If you do get a negative reaction, the problem is more likely to be theirs, so try not to worry about it too much.

It's very moving to see how you look each other straight in the eyes. You show a great complicity. By the way I'm Sebastien. I had a dog too, his name was Spooky. We used to walk together during hours in the countryside. Now I had to move in this city, newly arrived and quite alone. I miss Spooky ! I think I'll come back in this park very often. Step 3: Don't you just love the sound of the crunchy leaves in autumn when you step over them? I'm an introvert. When I think in English, I am quite correct but when it comes to speaking, I become too fast , and not fluent. I try to conclude my turn as early as possible.

- I am from Poland - I hope you've seen the movie "The Last Samurai." If so, you probably remember Katsumoto's first conversation with captain Nathan Algren - they introduced themselves and Katsumoto said that it was a very good conversation. We are not that extreme, but very often small talks of Poles resemble Katsumoto's conversation with Nathan Algren. - Questions asked during small talk are only intended to scratch the surface, touch the topic . So, your conversation at the office should look like: I'm Emma, by the way. I just started in the policy team. How long have you worked here? (or what team do you work in?) It was nice meeting you, see you next time. After asking the question, wait for the reaction of the person you are talking to. If you get a short response, you should probably finish the conversion. If the person is more talkative than you can expand on the topic you are talking about. If you start asking too many questions, you may come across as nosy and you'll have trouble building a good relationship with the person you're talking to. I hope my explanation helps you understand the nature of our small talks

Great work Jerome! You've picked something interesting to connect with and using the context nicely. If there was any way to improve I would suggest keeping it a little shorter and taking out some of the details, especially about when or how often the person walks their dog. They might feel a little uncomfortable since they don't know you so well. Perhaps just, "I've just moved into an apartment nearby so I might bump into you again. I have a dog too, Winston! He's really sociable, I'll bring him next time. Well, it was lovely to meet you! Have a good one!"

I am learning English through British, American, Canadian and Australian teachers on youtube. At the end of the day, i am wondering in what accent i will end up speaking in English 😅

In North America, accents tend to be more regional, not so much American or Canadian. You'll always be okay with people understanding you if you speak clear English. Practice tongue twisters to upgrade your fluency and pronunciation, plus focus on good intonation. A great exercise is to read an article, record a 2-minute review and then assess your pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary, grammar and coherence. If you have time, make a few notes to improve the recording and do another version. I've seen many people transform their English in 30 days using this simple technique.

Speaking CLEARLY is more important than which accent you speak in. My hope for you is that you develop your English voice to be true to who you are. And if your English includes elements of your native language, Canadian, American & Australian pronunciation (but you can speak clearly and confidently) that is a WONDERFUL thing!

To meet someone for the first time depend who is or are these persons i meam It's more or less easier with non natives English speakers but when they are natives guys the matter is somehow different.you've gotta be clear and confident in speaking to intruduce yourselve for the First time .

Don't be too worried. As long as you keep it simple and ask just one question, you'll be absolutely fine. You will probably find that after you ask a question, they may ask a question. One for one is a good rhythm. And if no questions come your way, end it there and move on :)

I find very daunting to start a conversation as I have some accent, obviously, I truly admire people that can do it with no hesitation. I’m afraid I can’t, BUT! I do smile a lot !! I say thank you and Hello a lot, when someone hold the door for me, or make eye contact with me but I’d never start a conversation, and I can tell why! since I heard the word “pry” for the first time! Of course this came out from a very mean person that wanted to isolate me in the office, but unfortunately, it put me off trying to have “chit chats” ..if someone engages with me, Brilliant !! And God have mercy on his/her soul because I’d never shut up!! 😂

Hello, I never understood how to pronounce the "th" sound in fast English when it often follows one after the other in a sentence. Especially if it's accompanied by sounds that are difficult to pronounce with like "s" and "r" or "t". Just keep on going, your tongue will get stronger and stronger. I get tired trying to make the rolling “rRRrr” sound in Spanish! It’s exhausting but practice will get you there.

Such a beautiful companion you got there. What's his name? I'm James, by the way. This is Leo, my dog. I started walking him in this park just three days ago. A good effort Dave, though most of these are thoughts you would keep to yourself unless you knew the person very well. Best to connect in a way that is relevant to the context you're in. So - yes to talking about lessons because you're introducing yourself while watching my video! No to talking about someone's personal appearance and using affectionate language with someone you just met.
