Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz faces a possible death sentence for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Kyle Laman, a former student at the school, testified during Cruz's sentencing, telling jurors about his injuries and how during one moment he was in the hallway alone with Cruz, who tried to kill him as he fled.

KYLE LAMAN that should’ve been the name used in this title. His testimony was so vivid. I can’t even begin to possibly fathom seeing what he saw living what he went through. This is gutting. When he said he told his friend “we’re gonna die” I got chills. So traumatizing. And hearing him say he saw lots of bodies in the hallway. I cannot imagine what it’s like to have to talk about it. I really hope he’s taking care of himself.

@Chameleonardodavinci yeah, one time I cracked my head open and the gash was incredibly wide. There was blood pouring down my face and somehow I managed to stay awake long enough to be taken to the hospital (mom was at work). I remember my mom screaming crying and hoping that I would be okay. Lucky enough, the object that hit me (a bike peg) didn’t reach my brain or else I wouldn’t be here today!!! 🤒

There is no excuse to hurt people. Period. I think you re trying to say that past trauma is not an explanation for violent behavior ? We will never know what the outcome of this trauma will be- too many victims- too many variables.
Hollie S
Hollie S 10 aylar önce
@ChelseaLavaya I think he means there are a huge variety of traumas that affect people in different ways - even with this single awful event the survivors will experience different consequences. These kids will have psychological support, and I think Wheelchairguy means that not everyone gets that to help them deal with trauma.
Cannelle Cinnamon
Cannelle Cinnamon 10 aylar önce
@ChelseaLavaya it means that multiple trauma especially very young when your brain is developping can give different results. Some horribles. The shooter obviously didn’t believe in love and only saw hatred and wanted to hurt. Trauma can give only some explanation. Give some understanding. But explanation is not at all the same as excuse. There is NO excuse for what happened. The shooter is a danger to society and will receive his deserved sentence.

He keeps having twitches and tics, his body involuntary moving/tensing muscles. Tics like that (as in, tics that aren't caused by tourettes) are the body's way of trying to show/express the anxiety and trauma inside. It's so heartbreaking to see a young person who's been traumatised like that. I hope he's still able to follow his dreams and go to EMT school

I feel for this young man. You could see the stress all over his face when having to re-live the events of that day. And the adrenaline that must have been pumping through his body at the time made it possible for him to run on a shattered ankle and save his own life. I think this is where the lack of understanding comes from, people don't realize that there weren't only 17 victims. @timidsore some people smile when talking about trauma, it’s their bodies way of trying to remain calm or utter disbelief that it happened. There’s actually a psychological explanation that explains why he’s reacting the way he’s reacting and it’s typically a sign of PTSD. His body does one thing but his mind is in another place. Very common with survivors that don’t express their sensitivity physically and try to fight it off emotionally. It’s a “conscious or unconscious attempt to stave off compassionate responses that feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable to survivors”. Google is free, do your research on body language, survivors guilt, etc. you can also tell his breathing Is a little labored, not necessarily deep breathes, body language shows signs of stress, hands and certain parts of his body shaking, that’s anxiety. It’s just simply him trying to remain calm. But you’re clearly oblivious

Agreed, I have also spent hours watching listening and crying. I am in shock and grief for all the victims and their families and wonder how they can get beyond this, if ever. After looking at coverage of the shooter himself, it seems he really doesnt have a clue, his empty faces with no blinking, no expressions. To me it represents the absolute failure the educational system has fallen to, and I fear, also symbolizes the depth of the breach in the functioning of the nation as a whole. I am in my 70s.

I've watched this case, every witness. it's as if the victims parents, and loved ones are living their lives but at the same time they are frozen in time on that day the shootings happened. I have never seen such sadness. My heart goes out to all the people who suffered such great losses. The 14 young victims had lives to live. The 3 adults, same thing. This trial has sort of put me in that day and what it was like for so many. the trauma was profound and the sadness is still very much alive in the hearts and minds of so many. The violent acts of NC were unmerciful that day. Things I've learned from this trial are hard to believe and unacceptable and unexcusable. All the people involved with NC as a child and teenager regarding his behavior dropped the ball. There were so many professional people who are trained to recognize troubled kids and take action, yet none did. He may be a troubled person, maybe even broken, but he knew right from wrong. I believe there is a special place for people who die horribly. I believe God takes care of them. There is never complete closure. There will never be a day, when we as a society, will say, it's all gonna be ok.

This is so sad listening to these stores. Such young people witnessing such extreme senseless horror. This is worse than war stories, because you expect this in a war situation. These young people were just in school like most of us have been when their lives changed forever. My heart goes out to all these victims and their families.

Breaks my heart that this young man has to live with such traumatic memories and can never shake it with his scars he has to see every day. It was so pointless and evil. So many kids like him have to live with these gruesome memories they experienced and try to move forward carrying this heavy burden in their souls.

Because the shooter's nothing without a gun in his hand and Kyle knows it. He's a coward and people will quickly forget about him as the years pass. What a pathetic life to lead; becoming a school shooter only to end up as police target practice or bubba's girlfriend. RIP to all those victims and salute to the survivors. I hope they go on to lead successful lives while the shooter rots in prison.

What a strong man, and he’s healing gracefully and growing, to reaching his goals, and studying, and becoming something in life, despite all he been through and the severe trauma he endured this day, like all the victims are strong, dead or alive, and mainly the ones who are alive to defend and retell their sides and perspectives, so everyone can get more justice, is just so touching and beautiful. Plus, imagine having trauma before, past trauma, and encountering this, but have so much courage to speak about your ptsd, and what happened to you.

They are all so strong, I hope they get more justice and everything, from how stuff goes, this is truly sad, but the courage and strong ness , makes faith be a true thing, and they will get their justice, mainly most of the justice is them healing and continuing to tell their story, and grow, and study, and chase their dreams, and have goals and wanting to be something in their life.

You can see while he's giving his testimony he has quick flashbacks and then he comes back to reality and you see his eyes change when he comes back. Most people probably don't notice this unless they too have ptsd or dissociative episodes. Sometimes the episodes people experience last a few seconds, other times it's minutes and in less often cases hours. As someone who also experience flash backs and dissociative episodes my heart goes out to this kid.

It truly tears at my soul knowing that EVERY DAY, people all around the world are going to experience things just as horrific as this shooting. At any given point in time, there are so many people actively suffering the worst physical and emotional pain one can imagine. Whether that be a random act of violence, a war scene, a natural disaster, or accident that takes innocent lives and scars the survivors. And that knowledge horrifies and depresses me. My only comfort is knowing that humans can be resilient, and can come out of these tragedies with resolve, as changed persons with more empathy and love in their hearts than seemingly possible for such a situation's survivor. And it really does make me think that of all the forces in the Universe, love just may be the most potent and important of all.

It’s literally unreal that he is alive. Sometimes we are born with ability’s that we don’t know we have or may never know we have until we are put in situations like this. We don’t know why we are able to handle or make choices and why some aren’t able to do the same. He should have never been able to leave that cut out with the way his ankle was and I believe had all 3 boys tried to leave at the same time they all wouldn’t have made it either especially considering he had to hide and wait for another moment to go through the exit and finally get to safety. I’m glad he is going into the medical field he’s going to be a wonderful EMT.
