From my experience, Japanese was the least surprised when you're speaking their language BUT they showed the most respect for you for trying to speak in their language.

Of all the ‘American in Asia’ channels, this one is the best at blending real education with a truly fun and quirky sense of humor. Always look forward to the latest!

My wife is Korean and when I met her dad he was mind blown just because I use the proper formal version of the few words I spoke instead of informal… it’s amazing how the appreciate even the slightest amount of effort in your trying their language it saddens me that here in America so man people will hate on bilingual people here just for speaking their first language with family or friends when all I do is envy them for knowing two languages well

I've seen a lot of shocked reactions when I spoke Chinese but my favorite moment was in the airport in Moscow for transfer to Beijing.I didn't know how to get to the gate for Beijing flight, so I just asked 2 Chinese girls in their language if they were going to Beijing too, and then there were like 10 other Chinese people who suddenly gathered around me to talk to me.

I had to laugh when the lady was stroking your hair. As a kid my grandparents would take me on holiday to Spain, when walking down the street or at the beach elderly Spanish ladies/men would stop and stare at me, they would point to my blonde hair, pale skin and green/blue eyes they would ask my grandparents to touch my hair. They would give me praise and hard boiled sweets out of their bags they had for their grandchildren, it was something so little but it was funny.

I grew up in China and have since moved to primarily english speaking countries, it was bittersweet to see you speaking Chinese so fluently with others, because I was able to see how much I lost my ability to speak Chinese. But, I was also happy that I was able to understand most of what you were saying without subtitles! It was very nostalgic. Love your videos.❤️

First time I went to Seoul, Korea I had a big bushy beard. Checked into a low / mid price hotel there were a male & female receptionists. Both fascinated by my beard (sort of a golden / ginger colour). Both wanted to touch, feel it, I let them, clearly it was something new, strange & different. They giggled like school children.

I'm no expert, but I think the best way to learn a language is total immersion. In their culture and their ways. Just saying

This is so neat. I’m just starting to learn a new language and it is refreshing to see people who study other cultures and live all over the world. This channel is so wholesome.

Ngl, it's a bit weird to see these folks being so surprised about foreigners knowing their language. Maybe it's bc we've had so much immigration over the past decades here in Germany but it's just really normal to see foreigners speak a variety of levels of German.

I wish I had the determination to learn another language. I really want to learn Korean but I get lazy if I get stuck and need someone to answer to regularly as letting them down wouldn’t be an option. I also think it’s just nice and respectful to be able to learn the language of whatever country you intend to spend time in.

During your time in Japan have you ever attended, or have an interest in attending a baseball game? I know the Japanese are very enthusiastic about their teams. I watch a game most days on tv. Now that COVID restrictions are lifting it is a great time to experience the excitement and people. All the best to you on your life’s journey. Love your posts.
