When it gets too cold, I head back to the warmth of my car. Sometimes, a squirrel or three will follow me back to my car to get more nuts.

Some squirrels are surprisingly well-adapted to humans and if you feed them they will be happy to let you hold them and pet them. Other ones, of course, will try to maul you by scratching and biting!

I've had many pet squirrels that I've rescued, and they're fantastic. They play, they show love, they cuddle -- they're very social. My favorite squirrel Peanut used to roll around in my hand like a nutcase and nibble on the tip of my pinky. They'd chew my ears too. The only thing is, if you're gonna have them inside, you'd better keep an eye on them. They will chew wires and they like chewing on wall corners.

Squirrels make AWESOME pets! As soon as I realized they use a litterbox (kept high, so the cats didn't use) my Skipper and Spaz moved in 😊 They loved indoor life and we're decent enough to go to bed early, so I could put my place back together and have the fun start again in the morning. My cats were a little frazzled at first, but soon joined in the fun. Two bad things - they chewed on everything and climbed up my legs (pants, ok shorts, yikes) RIP Skipper and Spaz - you guys were my best pets EVER

So how do you keep the furry from peeing and pooing randomly everywhere?

Unlike the pet rats I had when I was 12, these squirrels don't just randomly pee & poop. They live underground, and their habitat would become toxic if they just peed & pooped everywhere, so they have special separate caves for that. When they're on the surface, they dig little holes to pee & poop in, then they bury it, like cats do. In 2+ years of having them crawl on me, I've never been peed or pooped on. :)
