By the end of Encanto, we see Dolores united with her prince charming - or at least that is what it seems like from the outside. Theorists, when watching Encanto for the 100th time, my mind started thinking a little too hard about the whole Madrigal family and their magical, secluded town. Let's just say MAYBE they should hold off on the wedding for a while...

bro I literally noticed the inbreeding the first time I noticed that they were entirely surrounded by mountains. Simply because I remember random stuff and I remember that one group of people in Kentucky were subjected to this in similar circumstances (no magic involved, but they were surrounded entirely by mountains which is what I meant by similar circumstances)

Regarding the road and the bridge, my interpretation is that Luisa is re-arranging the town for the wedding. That's why she's moving the church to a more central location, that's why she's diverting the river and moving the bridge because she diverted the river and now it flows on a new path, thus needed her to move the existing bridge to a new location.

Mirabel, her sisters and cousins are the first generation of their family to be born within the Encanto. Presumably, there have only been one or two generations for other families in the village. Another comment mentioned how one of her family members (who married into the family) came from outside the village. But it couldn't hurt to have some more generic diversity lol

On the cracks appearing the first time: there’s a theory that Mirabel is somehow intricately linked to the magic, hence why she never got a door till the end of the movie. To support this, think about what took place shortly before the cracks appeared the first time: Mirabel feeling hopeless, shown by the line “am I too late for a miracle?” At the end of her song. This theme of Mirabel losing hope being tied to the cracks is shown again when Abuella starts verbally attacking Mirabel later and even during the initial dinner scene too, as Mirabel seems to be struggling to hold on to having hope but once Abuella, who always assumes Mirabel is useless or in the way due to her not having a gift, sees the prophecy, her mind automatically went to feeling dejected and hopeless.

One big flaw in this theory: despite starting with so few people they started with large amounts of diversity. Naturally, there would of been a mix of Native and Spanish genetics, and then there was also African genetic citizens as well. This makes it so there are large amounts of dominant genes to start that would combat any defective recessive. This also might be the reason for the ununiform studies for what a stable gene pool would need to be to start. Start with a bunch of similar people the you'll need to start with more, but if you have a heavily diverse pop you can start with less. And the Encanto starts with a fairly diverse population. So, you might need to get Austin back on the program to get more variables in there to included the amount of diversity that 3 genetic regions could have. Also, this would actually be a break through in considering a unifying formula to genetic diversity of small populations. So, definitely a worth while goal if nothing else. And maybe a revisit to other movies with small and/or devastated populations like Raya, Dragon's, and even Brave (considering the lack of diversity of those small populations)... Oh god, Hiccup is inbred...

@Cold Gold true. I always assumed that diverting the river had something to do with crops, irrigation, new seasons, whatever. But changing the course of the river would be reason to rearrange the whole town. I could see Abuela taking advantage of that to make the town perfect for the wedding because she likes to be prepared, so it might be partly true.

@Margarita , yes, they were born on the outside, but they were born to the group of people that entered the valley, so it doesn't make much difference whether they were born outside or inside, they would still count as the first generation born to that group of people (except, perhaps, for any kids that made it to the valley without their parents, as they would bring in some extra genetic diversity for that younger generation).

Anyone under 50 had to have been born there, at a minimum. Even though the triplets present as much younger at the time of the film, all three are 50, and Julieta and Pepa would have been in their late 20s at the births of their oldest daughters, Isabella and Dolores, who are both 21 presently. Felix and Augustin were almost certainly among those original children among the refugees. We only see at most ten other people who look to be between Abuela's age or older and the triplet's age. Assuming that the Encanto was truly sealed off during this time, as the director and writer have stated, only around 50 of the total initial population would still be around and counting toward the population total. Though the grandkids were the first generation of Madrigals born in the Encanto, there are approximately 28 years before their births available for the rest of the population to grow.

right? there was at MOST two generations born within the encanto, brunos generation, born just before, or just after the encantos creation, and mirabel's generation, born from those of bruno's generation. there is 100% something to say about what would of happened if the encanto hadnt opened up though., like imagine if the mountain didnt crack, another generation or two and matpat might of had a point

The cracks were real they were an extension of meribel feeling like she wasn’t a part of the family for the first time and her “power” as the “patron” effected the house when she tells everyone what has happened she forgets those feeling and the damage is restored. Patron in the concept of warlocks as she is the next replacement for the candle so too is she tied to the magic of the house.

It takes 3 generations to minimize genetic defects. Granted it’s always best to outsource genes, but still. They seem to have sufficient people so as long as they are careful it should be fine. Not to mention, natural mutations generally occur. While mutations occur in very small changes every generation, it’s still there.

i have another theory though, i think the magic of the encanto is actually that it is a literal safe place. anyone who needs a safe haven or means no harm to it or its people, can find it and travel to it easy, but if anyone wo wants to find it and means to bring harm to anyone there, will be wondering around in circles and never find it. kind of like storybrook in once upon a time.

Honestly I would love to know the implications of twins in the inbreeding process. Abuela had triplets, which means that all three of them have the twin gene to pass on to all their offspring. And it is common that it skips one generation, so if there was another person among those first 50-75 to enter the Encanto with said genes, you could probably see a boom in twin births when the grandkids start marrying other people from the current 310 population.

Inbreeding can cause disfigurement and madness along with A lot of other things. This theory works as evidence for Dolores being the villain since if the family inbred it could have caused her to be less sane. This doesn't entirely work since if abuela had kept her eye on who her grand kids were marrying to prevent inbreeding than she definitely would've kept tabs on her children. but it could work if you consider the possibility of the group abuela arrives with having inbred before they arrive. I don't have much evidence for this but it's cool how they go hand in hand.

Plus, I’ve always been more curious how the economy of such a small village works. If you have maybe 300-ish people tops in this Encanto, but no trade with the outside world…how are they getting all their luxuries? Glasses, fine clothing, metal-working and jewelry, THE INSTRUMENTS. Those kinds of things take skilled work and lots of resources, which ok, I’m sure there were probably some skilled artisans among the initial population of refugees, but taking into account all the people you would need for construction, raising animals, farming fields, mining metals (do they just have all the iron, copper, gold, silver, nickel, and tin deposits in that one valley?), quarrying stone…does the Encanto just poof these things out of thin air when they’re needed, like the Casita?
Garrett Troke
Garrett Troke 7 saatler önce
One of the things that needs to be taken into account with the 50/500 rule, is that it is sort of species dependent. Some species have far fewer problematic recessive genes and can inbreed more than others without issue. Some species have far more and can tolerate less inbreeding. Of course, we are speaking of humans here, so really, the survival of the people of Encanto would really depend on the prevalence of recessive genetic disorders. The lower the prevalence, the longer the population can be sustained, and the more inbreeding that can be tolerated. Yes, eventually, without some new genetic material being introduced into the population, there is a high likelihood that the majority of the population will eventually suffer from multiple genetic disorders (one specific genetic train we know will become prevalent is an allergy to bees). All of that being said, taking into account the birth rates mentioned in the video, the possibility of multiple breeding partners in the original group (culturally less likely to be the case), the size of the original group and the time frame of 50 years, the population would be fine. They would likely be ok for another century and a half, with only inbreeding occurring between peoples that are at least 2 generations removed from each other, which is not uncommon, even today.

1:30 i always felt the cracks disappearing was due to the emotional state of the family/general population, if that makes sense. When theres an off balance of harmony the cracks present themselves. Mirabel can also talk to and understand the house so she obviously has a strong connection to it. Im assuming her connection to the house PLUS my theory about house basing its form off the harmony of the household would explain why the cracks manifested so strongly in that moment. The cracks disappeared because everyone came back into the house and mirabel was no longer the sole focus of the room she was in. There was now a general harmony because of Antonio's party, and everyone being excited for him weighted out mirabel's feelings of inadequacy. This also explains later when the house actually does fall apart when mirabel is fighting with abuela. Everyone in the room is feeling inadequate or unharmonous(?) in some way which is why the house actually DOES fall apart and the cracks don't disappear. The majority of focus in the room and among everyone is disharmony, especially between mirabel and abuela who are the only two people who have a deep understanding/communicative connection to the house.

I think an important point to take into account. Since the scene of when they cross the river might be shorten for dramatic purposes, how about trying to find data of village sizes around the 1000 day war in Colombia (1899-1902). By the amount of people in the scene where abuelita meets Pedro, there must have been way more than 50 people in that village.

There's one thing you didn't account for. While the Encanto does make coming in or leaving the village difficult it's not all together impossible. We only see the path that they took across the river and the mountains spring up around them in all directions but they seem to be highest along that specific path. There are mountains all the way around but they appear smaller and to actually have some gaps between them meaning if they continued on in the opposite direction they could still have a way in and out of the Encanto. They did think that Bruno actually left, even though we find out he never did there must be a way to leave for anyone to believe that was even a possibility. All that being said... your calculations seemed to conclude that it would take 6 generations for inbreeding to occur and we only see evidence of 3 generations of people actually existing. Only half of your initial prediction. I also think that jumping from an estimate of 50 people to 300 would seem highly unlikely unless every couple has 3-4 children. It's estimated that on average people will only have 2-3 children which would mean that the population can't actually grow from 50 to 300 across 3 generations without breeding at a statistically higher rate. Technically possible but unlikely. I have to admit though this is something that while I don't think is really conclusive, there's too many unknown variables to consider, it is at least plausible.

You forget to mention the Amish in America when talking about close relations. There have been studies done on them and the odd genetic quirks and diseases that afflict them. I also remember reading about a family in the Appalachian mountains that was so inbred that their skin developed an odd blue pigmentation.

That’s fair but it’s revealed in the art book that Augustine is from outside the encanto so chances are there’s a trickle of people coming in

@Toby Bartels sure but I mean in the context of the period of time not through the whole series. The issue I have is with world building not with the actual story more specifically the claim that you can totally cross the mountains but only when it's convenient to the plot.

@Chubby Punk: Now I want an Encanto / Hotel Transylvania crossover.

@Emeraldpichu: It's not an ongoing persecution; it's a civil war that's been over for decades. If the initial pursuers were frustrated, that's all that they really needed.

I have family with history of inbreeding on Hispanic hills. You're right, luckily, it ain't that bad for my family. Not to mention, it didn't last long. Edit: should wait to watch full episode before commenting. O well, I deserve any snark.

Don't think I've ever clicked on a Film Theory video so fast before. I've had a few theories myself, so this made me really curious
