1916 Antique Russian Empire Axe Restoration - Making Leather Axe Sheath

Greetings Y’all after a long break, I ve not been around for a quiet some time due to some health issues, please accept my apologies. In this project ,I ve restored a Russian empire made axe. Initially the axe weight 1650 gr by the time I ve finished the project , it came down to 1500gr. I decided to sanblasted first. In order to make it mirror polished ,I had to file it by electric equipments and by hand. I lasered the emblem and the date which was faded in the first place to the same spot and I enlarged the emblem a bit.Big thanks to @LeonArt Atelier for assisting me with the laser work. Also thanks to @by OldHand assisting me with sharpening the axe. I thought it be good idea to use padouk for the handle since it is used to make musical instruments because the echoing sound of the axe seemed to me as it comes from an instrument. I fitted the geometrical parts of the axe into the handle so it has gained an aesthetical look. I had planned 70 or 80 cm for the handle however I figured 75 cm would be better during the process. I was assisted by @qaf Atelierf or the leather accessories, many thanks to him. I did not want to have a leather case only, I also wanted to have a leather shoulder strap so I can get around with it in the woods. I d thought it d be a short project but it took 30 days in order for me to complete all the process. All of my efforts worthed at the end since the final product looks pretty cool. I hope you like this project of mine as well, if you do like please do not forget to click the like button and share your comments, I can not wait to read them. See you at my next project, Warm Regards.

Wow! lThe result of this one is really beyond words. My wife said that couldn't be the same axe. I told her THAT'S why I watch your work. Well done, sir. Well done. Is there any way you could include the number of hours over how long you have in your projects? Just to give folks a better idea of the time it takes to complete the kind of next level work you do. Already looking forward to the next one.

@Jamie Klassen if we're talking about historically significant artifacts, there's a whole science and theory of doing those things and obviously it's a super rigorous discipline. but that with my mechanics, we're safely outside that don't have to concern ourselves with any of that. he deals with "old stuff" that would rot in a junkyard anyway so nobody cares what he does with it. literally can do no wrong even if he paints everything in pink and sets it on fire: nobody cares. so all the pressure of doing this or that goes out of the window and it's childish to even bother with definitions, whether it's "restoration" or "preservation", it's like garage science talk, no point really. what it comes down to is your own personal take, having a feel for these things and using your best judgement in how you'll squeeze out the most beauty and value actually out of the heap of junk you're restoring. my mechanics has the approach of making it not only what it once was but more than it ever was, what it could have been and never was, the best possible version, it's full potential. that means, a lot of the times, erasing a good part of what it actually was to make it into something more. and that's perfectly fine, it's visually stunning. it comes down to personal preference. I'd personally enjoy it more if some indication of the original were preserved in a small and symbolic way because that enhances the experience of the thing for me. having these little clues that prove that this thing is actually 100 years old and it's come all this way and now has a second life, that some part of it reaches back through time and connects it with its origin - that would make me want to pay more for the thing because that is what I value. to me that's additional, more then the object itself, the story that goes with it. the meaning. you can call that preservation or restoration or Susan, it's up to you, I'm just stating my opinion and preference. Everyone's equally welcome to their own. but as I said, you can do no wrong and he's doing a great job 98% of the way IMO.

I think you’re confusing preservation with restoration. When restoring a car or motorcycle you don’t leave a part untouched to show the previous condition.

@Meine Mechaniker that's really not the attitude to bring to this discussion. We are all in awe of your technical and creative prowess. But that doesn't mean you can't improve. It's not obvious to me what you could improve when it comes to craftsmanship so I keep my mouth shut about those things. But I do think there is room for conceptual improvement - not only how a thing looks and how it performs but what it means and what makes it special. Most of the objects you restore are cool not only for their timeless design and robust utility that endures through the decades - they are also cool because they are relics from the past and have their journey. Every object has a story and to me it's important that you can "read" that story from the object itself, that some small part at least remains fully genuine. Ask yourself why a rare Breguet or Patek loses half it's value when you clean, polish and "improve it"? The original state is subjectively and also monetarily valuable because it can never be done again, while you can restore it once or ten times, now or in 50 years - you can always do this. When Norman Foster restored the Reichstag, he didn't wash the walls and plaster over the damage - yes the building is restored and fully functional, ultra modern. But you can still read russian scrawl on the walls when soviet soldiers occupied Berlin and freed it from the Nazis. This russian graffiti makes it not less but more special and valuable - not because it's pretty but because it's genuine. It''s the real thing. Look, I'm just a random nobody from the internet and I'm not giving a lecture here. You're a great craftsman and I enjoy your videos. I take for granted that you don't care much about what I say so you are in no danger from some random comment. Feel free to forget about all this - I might have come out a bit strong and impolite but I only hope that you consider my point of view if that will add another dimension to your work. That's all.

That was absolutely fantastic! I've seen quite a few videos from other restoration sites, but nothing like this. You did everything from start to finish, and added some very nice attachments, that is, the handle, grommets, sheath and belt. This was amazing work and happily subscribed too see more of your work. Thank you for this video; it was truly a pleasure to view.

The man with a plan. Awesome job, as usual, that goes beyond restoring ancient artifacts : there is also design involved ! What I love with your videos (aside from the tedious and yet very didactic editing job) is to watch a trully engineer's mind going full gear around projects and occasionnal difficulties to get an outstanding result. Thank you !

Beautiful leather work, particularly nice touch with the crest on the sheath press studs. Would it have been possible to repeat the laser work on the blade multiple times (10 -20?) to get some depth similar to the original markings?
